Nominations chamber isn’t soundproof

UPDATE: Evictee Sarah says you can hear 'S' sounds coming from noms chamber

Update 17/9: Things aren’t looking too good for the supposedly soundproof nominations chamber. Behind Big Brother user bern writes in that recent evictee Sarah admitted the chamber leaks noise.

The day after Sarah’s eviction, I was in the queue at Gold Coast airport and she was behind us, so we got chatting, and the topic of nominating came up. My mum mentioned she laughed when they would cover their mouths while nominating, and Sarah said that is was necessary because you can see the reflections, but also that despite the fact they would pipe music into the nominations room, you could definitely hear when the housemate nominating would say an “S” sound.

It appears that while the chamber blocks most noise, some still makes it out to the other housemates. Scroll down to see when Zoe’s loud cough travelled through the not-so-soundproof glass.

Earlier article: Oops, the risks of live TV. Big Brother producers weren’t sitting comfortably tonight after Ray let slip that the nominations chamber which is supposed to keep housemates from hearing each other’s nominations isn’t actually soundproof.

“Let’s just say that chamber wasn’t exactly soundproof”.

The admission prompted a quick attempt at damage control by Sonia Kruger who suggested Ben had read Ray’s lips through the nomination chamber glass, rather than hearing the actual nominations. Ray replied “nah he definitely knew”. Sonia replied “our producers have checked and it is soundproof”.

We’re not convinced the producers are telling the truth. During last week’s nominations show Zoe coughed loudly while Michael was allocating points. We’ve reviewed the episode and you can clearly hear her cough through the supposedly soundproof glass. (You can also see for yourself – skip to 25:25min on the episode).

Big Brother executive producer Alex Mavroidakis quickly jumped on twitter in a dash for damage control:

This response doesn’t make sense because you can’t make glass thicker on an existing booth, and the first round of nominations was to nominate female housemates only. Ray wasn’t able to nominate Ben.

An ex-glazier on our forums told us for the booth to be properly soundproof it would need to be constructed with two layers of glass with a 50mm gap between the layers.

A fundamental rule of Big Brother is that housemates cannot discuss nominations or know who nominated who while in the house. If the chamber isn’t soundproof, it means the Big Brother production crew have been fibbing to viewers.

Users on our forums have pointed out that soundproof chamber gimmick is pointless anyway because cameras in the walls of the nominations room pan to which ever housemate is being nominated at the time. Housemates can see the reflections of this movement through the camera run glass.

Here’s the new intruder

Muscled, likes motorbikes and bikini girls

You can’t hide on the internet! Here’s a whole bunch of photos of Samuel Wallace, the new intruder who will be entering the house this week.

Big Brother producers didn’t stray very far from the BB compound to grab this latest housemate: He’s from Surfers Paradise, just down the road from the house, and works at Koi Dining and Lounge Bar. Perhaps they picked him up while having dinner the other day.

And is he an “everyday Aussie”? We’ll let you decide. He’s a beefcake muscle guy who loves motorcycles and girls in bikinis. While we were writing this news article Sam’s Facebook profile magically disappeared off the internet, but it was located at http://www.facebook.com/samwallace9090

Double eviction date for your calendar

Not on a Sunday

… well we don’t know for sure but it’s a very likely double (or multiple) eviction date.

Eviction show tickets for the next few weeks have been made available online and reveal there will be no eviction show on Sunday 30th September. Channel Nine don’t want Big Brother getting in the way of their precious NRL Grand Final telecast.

Instead, a special eviction show has been scheduled for Tuesday 2nd October (Day 51).

We’re not exactly sure how it will work given this is the day after nominations, but it’s the right timing during the season for multiple evictions.

Big Brother producers have remained very formulaic this year: they threw in an intruder at the 20-30 day mark (just like the past six seasons!) so a double eviction can be safely predicted around Day 50.

Interestingly, whenever a second round of intruders have entered, it has been around the 50-60 day mark. Time will tell!

Trolls bullied Ryan on Facebook

"Is this when they educated you?"

‘Friends’ of evictee Ryan Buckingham’s Facebook page have been bombarding his photo galleries with insults including comments calling a him “a retard” and “poof”.

The insults have been posted over the past few years and appear to be from established friends before he achieved Big Brother fame.

In one post, Ryan misunderstands that comments on a photo of a fake pet pig are directed towards him. In another, he incorrectly corrects a user’s grammar, further fuelling the troll insults.

Just today newspapers reported Ryan was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce with article tag-lines “he’s no dumbo”. However the insults on his Facebook page frequently take stabs at his lack of studying.

Here’s some excerpts:

George Pardalis: “May I state the IQ of pigs a quite high certainly superior to Ryans

Chris Kingsford: “This kid is a full blown retard”

Ta-tah Estelle

She was a skater girl, we said seeya later girl

Estelle pink top

Estelle pink topRebel rap girl Estelle will be skating her way out of the Big Brother house this Sunday – according to the latest odds from Centrebet, she’s a sure thing to be evicted.

In what is fast becoming the most predictable Big Brother season eviction-wise, universally panned Estelle is faring at 1.22 to be evicted at the time of posting this article.

To put this into perspective the next likely to be evicted, Angie, is far away at 4.80. The centre of teenage girls’ hearts and voting power is Ray at 7.00.

For the past few weeks Estelle has been listed as the least likely to win the season, coming perpetually last in all winner odds. At the other end of the scale, Michael is still in the lead to be crowned winner of Big Brother 2012.

Stacey however has been quietly climbing up the ranks and is now equal third with George. Josh is coming second. Despite Ray being quite safe from eviction this week he is now least likely to win the season – even intruder Ava has better chance. Here are the full odds at the time of writing:

  • Michael 3.75
  • Josh 5.50
  • Stacey 6.00
  • George 6.00
  • Layla 10.00
  • Zoe 12.00
  • Bradley 12.00
  • Angie 14.00
  • Benjamin 14.00
  • Ava 14.00
  • Ray 15.00
  • Estelle 34.00

Intruder ahoy

The first intruder is on the way, and it's a girl

Sonia's duck face

Just as we suspected earlier this week, Big Brother is preparing to introduce the season’s first intruder. We hear she – yep, a female – is already in lockdown and will enter the house early next week.

Producers have released embargoed housemate information to the Sunday media.

Big Brother’s terrible marketing ploy and common slurry Lil Sis practically confirmed this on the official site blog today: I think they’re ready for a bit of extra company, don’t you? In a few days I’m going to introduce you to somebody new …

With Channel 7 rival TV show X Factor announcing their Top 12 over Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the producers must battle to keep their position in the ratings and maintain viewer interest.
