The Fitbit Cult

Hey Fitbitters!
My first full day, and I just reached my 10,000 steps.
I probably overdid the exercise because I was enjoying watching my total go up, I won't do it every day.

How did everyone else go today?
Hooray for Meglos! Hooray at las!
Hooray for Meglos he got his steps done fast!
Don't be mistaken, don't be misled
Meglos did 10 000 steps but Trala gives good head!

Well done you!!!!!

Of course you'll do it everyday!![DOUBLEPOST=1424640143][/DOUBLEPOST]
Woohoo!
I was with a friend tonight who also has a fitbit and at around 11pm we both realised we were both around the 8k mark. So we ran around the hall we were at for about half an hour until we both hit 10k!
Well done Road Runner!!!!

I'm using misfit. Lost 12 lbs the first month while traveling. Just got home and there are temptations everywhere. I'm pissed at my husband for buying a box of cookies. I'm addicted to pastries and he knows it. It's like a big "f you".

I've had a Fitbit Charge for three weeks now and am loving it. I'm averaging just over 10,000 steps a day at the moment, and hope to keep it up. It's harder to get the steps on the days I work from home, and a real eye-opener as to just how inactive I was!

@jessy_girl and @bleachy_dude (and others getting little sleep) - I have an app called Sleep Talk that you may also be interested in. I currently average about 4 hours' sleep a night, and using the Sleep Talk app (it only turns on and records when there is 'noise') have found out that my restless periods early in the night are from coughing. I'm now on day 4 of no smoking as a result, so fingers crossed in time this also improves! I'm not sure if it will be of any help to you, but it's really interesting playing the recordings back in the mornings. :)

Thanks @Oswin I'm going to have a look at that app actually, the more insight the better really.

Hey and well done on making to day 4 without smoking. I've been down that path myself (umm a few times) so I know it's not always easy.

You sound like you're killing it with general activity too. I've been shocked at my truly lazy days too, but the fitbit has definitely lessened these for me.

The only reason I see myself joining this cult would be to compare my dead-to-the-world sleep patterns with all your restless souls.

I don't have a fitbit, so I don't know the nitty gritty details of my sleeping patterns, but I average about 5-6 hours sleep a night, sometimes less. I can't do anymore than that. Is that good or bad? Also, does the fitbit help you control your diet? Because that would be cool if it did that.

Also, has anyone ever read The Russian Sleep experiment?

I find napping to be worse. I wake up feeling sick.

Another method i have found works is, when trying to fall asleep, breath in VERY deeply through your nose ten times.

I have very rarely got to the 9th or 10th count,,,,it is funny,,,yet it somehow knocks you out into a very deep sleep where you feel relaxed and sleepy, of all things

If you do get to 10 deep breaths thru your nose, then continue to breath JUST thru your nose til u do fall asleep

You will then find that when you next awaken, be it an hour later or 8 hrs later, that you are STILL breathing just thru your nose

It is 528am...i am about to employ this method
:)

Sigh, another night, another crappy sleep. That's a bit later than I usually go to bed, no wonder I slept in a whole extra hour - not that it appears to have done me any good.

You can link your fitbit to My Fitness Pal which is an app you can use to track your daily intake of food, so yeah it can help. Like anything though, you are still required to put the effort in and actually control your eating yourself. It's helpful though, you can have all the information on one page.

I have tried deep breathing, but not only through the nose. I usually get heaps past 10 breaths before falling asleep though.
I will try. I used to snore badly with a deviated septum, I've had that surgically corrected now though, perhaps I have to re-train my body to breathe through my nose when asleep.

When you wear a fitbit do you have to swing your arms so that you get an accurate reading on how many steps you take?

Very nifty. What you eat is just as important as exercise in trying to keep healthy.

The way I get to sleep is to try not to think. Just empty my mind. But I suppose breathing deeply could work.

I wear mine in my pocket the majority of the time, I find it to be more accurate anyway. But yes if you are like that chick on Seinfeld and don't swing your arms your reading will likely be smaller, but it'd still detect some movement I'm sure.

I'm constantly pushing a pram, I need those steps to count!

Sure is. Even more important, especially if you're aiming for fat loss. I just discovered a cool thing in there tonight actually reepy, you can enter your goals and it will work out your calorie expenditure and if it's linked to MFP it will tell you how many calories you have remaining to still reach your goal. Admittedly my goal is not really weight loss but more the specific macros slash it eating crap, but it seems like a good tool all the same.

I don't swing my arms when I walk, so I suppose a step tracker would be better in my pocket.

I'm only 3 days into this but I have found so far that, wearing it on my non-dominant arm -
Excercise bike doesn't count the steps if I'm holding onto the handlebars, but does if I let my arms hang free or rest them on a leg
Same with cross trainer
Normal walking or treadmill counts whether I'm swinging my arms or letting them hang normally

Reached my 10,000 steps by 7pm tonight (the last 500 or so by deliberately pacing the yard like a lunatic to reach my total so I could veg out and watch TV for the rest of the night)..

Go you!

The motivation is the best reason to get one of these in my opinion. I've just landed in bed with over 9000 steps. I was only on 3000 by 5pm after working in an office most the day so I have clocked up the rest this evening. I chose to walk down the road to the cafe to get my coffee instead of drive and put some extra steps here and there over the evening. Would never have even thought of doing it before getting my fitbit. Driving always seemed more logical.
