The Fitbit Cult

I much prefer walking to running because I'm always afraid people will laugh at me if they see me running.

Oh yeah, and awesome work with all your walking, @Inigo Montoya. Well done.

Oh wow look at you! Waking up early to go running. How far do you run? When I go for a walk there is this section of the track that I have been lately using for running, it's about 400m long the only problem is I am fucked after that short run (former smoker and unhealthy/unfit person here).... anyway well done on hitting the 20,000 steps for the first time!

Cheers @Inigo Montoya – I have no doubt it will get harder as winter approaches. Getting up early on frosty mornings will be the real test.

I only did 3.5k yesterday. The rest of the steps came from walking to work and back, walking the dogs, etc. Next week I’m aiming for 4.5k, and gradually more after that. I ran a 10k event two years ago, and it’s coming up again in June so that’s the goal. :)

...wow!... I've just sat and read the whole 14 pages of this thread for the first time and I have to say... good on all of you for what you have managed to do for yourselves so far!... this 'fitbit' thing sounds pretty damn cool for what it can do for people... congratulations to all of you for showing such commitment to your endeavours... everyone has been telling me that I am an inspiration for others in my recovery on another thread but you are all an inspiration to me in showing how determined that you all are in improving your health and sleep etc... well done peoples!... colour me impressed!... cheers.

Well this is clearly faulty. So apparently I just lay perfectly still all night, my bed suggests otherwise. Plus I vaguely remember waking up at least once. Still, I'll take it.

Just got a "London Underground" badge for having walked 402 kilometres.
I suppose I'm doing ok then.

So I am heading off to south and central america and then New York for the next 5 months.

Do I take my fitbit?

I tend to wear a watch travelling which I don't at home. So it and a watch will be weird.

Then, the main reason I have it and like it is I will check it and be like, 'Fuck I have done nothing today, I need to go do something.'

This isn't necessarily going to be an issue when travelling. Say I'm at a point where I am spending a long time on a bus. Nothing I can do. Is there any benefit to go, 'I just did 30,000' steps today when hiking. I use it as a motivational tool.

So is there a reason I should take it?

I'd take it for motivation and a bit of personal reward. You might not do that many steps every day, and shouldn't worry if you don't, but on days when you do 30,000 it's nice to know, and you'll feel pretty good about yourself.

Well it's up to you obviously, but I'd take it anyway @up_all_night. Don't worry about wearing it in your wrist, just have it on your bag (when you have one?) or just on your person in general, and you can have it as a reference point. I took mine to the US last year and just had it in my bag and it was good to track my steps and sleep on what sometimes felt like inactive days. Yes obviously your hiking will be a huge number of steps but what about in New York? You might decide you need motivation there or want to compare a day running around the city to a day hiking, you know?

You have the Charge Hr right? So just use it as your watch as well :) all in one.

Got an "urban boot" badge today for reaching 15,000 steps for the first time.
I've discovered how to put podcasts on my phone, it makes all the difference.

Well done on the new Badge!
What podcast do you listen to? And yes if you are listening to a subject that you love, it can make a 2 hour walk feel like an hour.

Thanks.
I've only listened to two podcasts while walking so far, a Doctor Who one.
I'll definately be checking out others now.

Hey fatty!

How you going with your weight loss?

How you going with your weight loss?

HA!

Pretty good thanks Trala.
It's a nice feeling knowing every step (literally now) takes me closer to being an ex-fatty.
The walking has been much more effective than the gym ever was.

Walking worked for me too (along with change in diet and listening to soul lifting brilliance that is the music of world icon Tina Arena).

What Doctor Who podcast are you listening to, @Meglos?

Nice work @Meglos.

Walking is great as it's good for your cardiovascular system and gentle on your joints while encouraging bone strength. Or something like that anyway, I'm not an expert. I am loving the Dr Karl podcasts currently, I only allow myself to listen to them when jogging, or at the very least whilst walking.

Would have had a new steps record (no, not the 5,6,7,8 bunch) today, but the fitbit went flat around the 9000 mark.
I'll still get my 10,000 once it's recharged, but it was probably double that as I was about halfway down the walking trail when it stopped counting.
