Well, saw two
Sweeny Todd
In spite of a very professional movie with Johnny Depp's superb performance and excellent singing (ditto for the star of the future, Ed Sanders), and creditable, fun performances by Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter, I found myself yawning at about the ninety minute mark. Yes, I was shocked to find myself doing it. But once I started, I wasn't able to stop. Was it that I could predict the entire plot (but it is hardly reasonable to judge a musical by its plot, and romance, melodrama, and slasher genres are supposed to have predictable plots, like fairy tales. I'd feel ripped off if they didn't.) Or maybe it was the tunes, that all sounded similar, and all sounded like recitative.
No matter how, and much as I regret it, this movie bored me.
Thankfully Juno
is wonderful from start to finish. Quirky script, great animation, original songs, excellent actors, including older actors, lively and unpredictable. Seeing the seasons of suburban British Columbia makes me want to move there, it is so lovely. Love Ellen Page, Jason Bateman, Allison Janney, JK Simmons, Olivia Thirlby and little Sierra Pitkin especially. Which is not to deny Micheal Cera or Jennifer Garner their due. They were great. Love it, the whole thing.
