The Day the Earth Stood Still.
It was as lame as expected, but nothing could have prepared me for the intensely irritating bratty stepchild of the female protagonist, played by the beautiful Jennifer Connelly.
The pleasure of the original film is seeing headstrong, paranoid humans, dumbfounded by the superior technology and intellect of Klaatu. In the remake, the humans, presumably wiser thanks to films like Close Encounters and E.T, are even more paranoid, yet ludicrously sure of their own importance. Even I could have told the army commander that sending strike jets against the giant robot would be futile. But I was prepared to run with the black comedy angle, providing the robot did some appropriately retributive arse kicking.
I soon realised there was no comedy intended. The film was actually taking itself seriously with its Inconvenient Truth message. The robot fizzles, the ambivalent Klaatu, played by a Spock channeling Keanu Reeves, dithers, product placements come and go, and the Earth is saved (as if it wouldn't be) much to my disappointment. These are bad enough, but there is worse.
The subplot concerning the aforementioned bratty child... My only consolation was not having a real life bratty child sitting behind me, kicking my chair. I cringed in agony every time the little shit, played by Jaden Smith, came on screen. I fantasised about taking a brick to his pretty little face, smashing it open, prising his jaws apart, pulling his tongue out, and feeding it into a blender. Even though I didn't know who the kid was, it was no real surprise to find out later he was the son of Will Smith. I can only hope he has a seizure or something before he grows up to become a franchise, just like dad.
The Day the Earth Stood Still wasn't a total waste of money though. I had been thinking of seeing Seven Pounds - only for the lovely Rosaria Dawson of course. But one Smith film for 09 is one too many for me.
Even worse is the Eddie Murphy film about a spaceship in the shape of a person that falls in love.
I started to watch vicky cristina Barcelona tonight...but GAH...it was just too boring & gave up after about half an hour,
Has anyone seen it...should I watch the rest?
I've never seen a Woody Allen movie that I've liked.

You walked out of the cinema?
I'd watch to the bitter end, if only for Scarlett Johansson.

No, they turned their pirated DVD off.

Hellboy II The Golden Army
Compared to the original this had its ups and downs. It tried to be like MIB with lots of monster cameos during a long walkthrough of the good guys headquarters. It had a lot of action going on, and a ton of CGI but the opening story had a bit of crap CGI in my opinion.. They're telling the story of a war with elves, ogres and humans and the humans aren't even human looking.
But I could forgive that as the movie was pretty cool. 110 miutes of fun.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
It's definitely one of my favourite movies of the last 10 years. Jim Carrey is way underrated in this role and Kate Winslet was absolutely flawless. The direction and Cinematography were just brilliant. Too bad Michel Gondry followed this up with the fairly mediocre Be Kind, Rewind. Ah well, at least I have this film to cherish for the rest of my days.

Tonight i decided to watch Pursuit of Happyness.
For those that haven't seen it, the movie has Will Smith and his son in it. It's a really good rags to ritches story, well written and well played.
Isn't that based on some kind of true story?

I watched this the night after my dad died. Just randomly picked it off my library shelf..
It's been quite a few years since I have seen this and I still thought it was good, but maybe not as great as the first time I had seen it. Interesting story idea of medical students making themselves dead in order to see if they find anything on "the other side" and coming back to life to tell the story.
More interesting that upon their return they have brought back things from the past into the present. And now they have to deal with those.

It is. Will Smith's character "Chris Gardner" is a real person who actually has a cameo at the end of the film.
I really enjoy that movie. I like a good inspirational story every now and then. Especially the ones based on actual events.

I think Jim Carrey is a genius and I absolutely LOVE Kate Winslet...but I think I'd rather castrate myself than watch this movie ever again. I saw it when it first came out and it made no sense whatsoever. Maybe I'd understand it more now, but at the moment I consider it the single worst movie I have ever seen.

You must watch it again. It takes a few viewings to really understand it as it's not all in chronological order and it's just a strange concept to begin with. But it's really a brilliant movie.
