In The News

^^Terrible, on the weekend I got talking to a family from Canterbury NZ, they moved here 18 months ago, couldn't stand the constant minor tremors and the associated fear. I think she said they had experienced 500 tremors in 10 years (I think it was 10 years, I forget).

Nope.. Don't understand your "gobbledegook" especially when PEOPLE are dead and injured.

One being an 8 year old boy :(

Friends of ours are in Boston at the moment because over the previous weekend Boston hosted the Synchronized Skating World Championships, thankfully they are all fine.

You must be relieved to hear they are Ok.

Oh dear Thatcher's funeral, and I think they have made a big mistake - too big, too expensive, too many people hate her and it's only going to be horrible.
Really it's just wrong to spend that much money, love or hate her, some cost, but no politician warrants that.

Did I hear correctly on the radio $10,000,000 is the cost?

I'm happy for all the Real Tax Dollars (IE, less than $30,000 after what I've managed to have returned to me one way or another) extracted from me in my working life thus far to be used to pay for an expensive funeral for Julia Gillard ... providing it was scheduled to coincide with Margaret Thatcher's, that is. :D :D :D

Anyhoo, from here and all bolding mine: http://www.businessspectator.com.au/news/2013/4/17/politics/howard-arrives-thatcher-funeral

Former prime minister John Howard says the fact some people are celebrating Margaret Thatcher's death proves she made her mark on the world.

But Australia's official representative at Baroness Thatcher's funeral wouldn't comment on plans by some protesters to turn their backs on her coffin as it is carried through London's streets on Wednesday morning.

Indigenous activists famously turned their backs on Mr Howard at reconciliation conferences when he was prime minister.

"I don't want to dignify that behaviour with answering that question," Mr Howard said when asked whether such a protest on Wednesday would be disrespectful.

Opponents of Lady Thatcher have vowed to pelt her coffin with eggs, coal or milk if they can get close enough - or simply turn their backs on the passing procession.

Mr Howard said Britain had an "unrivalled tradition of free speech" and he wasn't troubled by regular protests.

"People who leave no imprint on the world don't have people celebrating their death," he told reporters in London.

"The people who are attending from around the world ... is a measure of the enormous regard in which she was held."

Asked if Lady Thatcher's death had caused him to reflect on what sort of funeral he'd like, the former Liberal leader, 73, replied: "Good heavens no. Gee whiz. Lord no."

"Ask me about the (cricket) Ashes please," he said to change the topic before realising his words could be misconstrued and adding: "No connection."

Police are increasing security at Wednesday's funeral after two bombs exploded at the Boston marathon in the US, killing at least three people.

Mr Howard said the incident didn't make him more concerned about security.

"Life must and should and will go on," he said, adding Lady Thatcher herself demonstrated remarkable courage by delivering a 1984 conference speech in the aftermath of an IRA attack on the Grand Hotel in Brighton.

The former Australian PM said he shared "very similar views" to Lady Thatcher who was prime minister from 1979 to 1990.

"The great thing about her was you knew what she stood for - love her or loathe her," Mr Howard said.

"The worst thing in the world in politics is for people to have no idea what you believe in.

"You never had that problem with Margaret Thatcher."

Mr Howard said the Iron Lady, along with Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II, brought about the downfall of the Soviet Union "which is the single most transformative political event in my lifetime".

Call me humorless but I think that is off.

From here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/apr/17/margaret-thatcher-funeral-london-standstill

The capital will come to a standstill as military personnel and members of the public line the streets to watch as Lady Thatcher's coffin – draped in a union flag – travels along the procession route to the cathedral.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will attend the service along with the prime minister, David Cameron, and former leaders Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

It will be the first time the monarch will have attended a funeral of a British prime minister since that of Winston Churchill in 1965.

John Howard is attending on behalf of Oz, thank goodness.

^ heh. "Equality" means "What is good for the ewe is good for the ram" ?

... and speaking of things white though not so woolly, I noticed the following in relation to the white elephant called the "NBN" here: http://www.smh.com.au/national/ligh...in-nbn-saga-20130412-2hqul.html#ixzz2Ql9DtmoR

In 2006, Melbourne computer programmer and tech pioneer Jon Oxer injected a microchip the size of a grain of rice into his arm. The chip, which is still working fine, allows him to open the front door of his fully automated house. Oxer says the NBN's 100 Mbps speeds could be immediately helpful in his various work projects quite apart from the consumer applications.

''It's a case of build it and ideas will come,'' Oxer said

Hmmmm. Big Government created and owned and monitored communications system wot everyone is pressured to be hooked up to, what could possibly go wrong with that ?

Am I the only person who thinks posting on a forum and uploading video while on holidays is super bonkers? I mean I can understand wanting to keep your loved ones in the loop, but a forum? Where your basic identity is like a closely hidden secret? It's super bonkers I tells ya!

And I will tell you another thing for nothing, while enjoying a seaside adventure, a laptop obscuring my view would be about the last thing I would want, although my guess, 'Derrrrs' as you affectionately call him would probably love it, he feels his holiday adventures are so important he doesn't like us to miss even a second.
