Yep. I got a lot of Borg vibes aswell. Assimilating humans. Adapting to weapons. The hive mind. And like you said Mud, that wide shot of them all in that ship or whatever it was.

Nice episode though.

That little thing floating at the end was one of the Cyber mites wasn't it?

...I watched the episode again and paused that particular part Will... I think that you're right... even though the whole Cyberman planet exploded and supposedly killed them all that Cyber mite would still retain all of the Doctors memories that the other Cyber Doctor got to learn while in his head... I'm guessing that Moffatt and his team are going to have that come back and bite The Doctor on the arse yet again sometime in the future eh?... cheers.

Didn't we have a luvverly time, the day we went to Trenzalore?

...lololololol!... geez it would be a blast if the cast of Dr Who did a Trenzalore version wouldn't it?...

...in regards to the leaking of the DVD's too early... what a bunch of dunderheads over in the USA... I for one do not want to know beforehand what happens until I see it in it's usual timeslot on Sunday... that's my 'I can't wait' night when it comes to TV... trouble is... this is the last one until the Xmas or 50th anniversary episode... I'll be getting withdrawal symptoms until then lol!... cheers.

...I do see and understand your idea of allowing yourself to freely be assimilated by either the Cybermen or the Borg Derspatz but in both cases don't both of them take away all of your humanity completely according to the writers of both shows?

I've got a "fan collection" DVD box set of "borg" episodes to watch (only got it last week and haven't had the chance yet) and although I've prolly seen most of them on TV long ago, my memory is not clear on the specifics.

That said, it begs the question of "what is humanity", yes ? I mean, in order to "take away" all of humanity and still leave a functioning shell, surely what constitutes "humanity" would first have to be well defined and understood ?

I have little doubt that what we call "mind" can be somewhat artificially or accidentally constrained and/or denied of sensory input or conscious awareness of sensory input within a body and brain as well as denied control of various body functions.

I mean, wouldn't that sort of thing be happening when somebody is "put under" for an operation ... or falls asleep on the couch after too much red wine ? :D ;)

But that is hardly even defining what humanity is, let alone taking it away.

However, let's just presume for a moment that becoming a borg does mean that the "you" who is driving your body is basically put to sleep or bound and gagged within you. You're still there though aren't you ? And it's now the hive mind driving your body, yes ?

That you basically become possessed ?

Well, how would that hive mind deal with folk who aren't actually utterly "alone" inside ? Without exploring such ideas as fractured minds, multiple-personalities and multiplicities etc etc etc, how would that hive mind deal with a person who can't actually be forcefully possessed by non-human intelligences because they belong to the Creator of the heavens and the earth and all that is seen and unseen and thus are considerably shielded/protected from such evils ?

How do you think those borg nanites and cybermen cybermites would fair against a "born-again" "temple of the Holy Ghost" ? :D

In that senario I think they would soon discover that 1) not all of humanity is easy pickings and 2) Thou Shalt Not Attempt To Assimillate Thy Creator Via Those Who Are His Lest Thy Alsoeth Wisheth Thy Hive To Smote With Greateth Wrath And Soeth Be Broughtest To A Sudden Endeth ... or something like that.

In short, when confronted with nanite or cybermite wielding possession attemptors like the borg or cybermen, my response would be:

...Ders my thoughts are that the state of being 'put under' is probably the closest to the idea of being taken over by the Cybermen or Borg 'hives'... you're completely detached from your basic instinct of survival 'mindset'... although I believe that over a length of time your mind would slowly regain it's own consciousness (is that a word?) and your fight for independence and the regaining you're own control over your body would eventually prevail regardless... this is my interpretation of what the writers of both shows intend to portray... I believe that your mind and dare I say it... your soul... has the basic will to survive regardless of what is thrown at you in order to continue...

...again... just my thoughts... my idea of being 'possessed' is being duped into following a mindset by being... I don't know... let's say brainwashed / hypnotised or even drugged to willingly participate in what people wish you to do... to me that is different to being totally deprived of the use of your mind and body functions altogether...

...I am by no means a religious person... I really don't believe in God at all myself... but... I think that people that do believe in God would probably be able to regain their mindset a lot quicker than some others probably because they already have a strong faith that God will look after them / save them just because they do believe... as they were being Cyberised or Borgised they would be succumbing to the process while already believing they would be finding a way out of their predicament... because of their faith...

In that senario I think they would soon discover that 1) not all of humanity is easy pickings and 2) Thou Shalt Not Attempt To Assimillate Thy Creator Via Those Who Are His Lest Thy Alsoeth Wisheth Thy Hive To Smote With Greateth Wrath And Soeth Be Broughtest To A Sudden Endeth ... or something like that.

...lololol!... I love the way your mind ticks over sometimes Derspatz... funny as...

...hahaha!... come get some... funny as part 2!...

...as I said in my previous post I would allow myself to be Cyberised or Borgised simply because... (as you also said)... at least there would still be the opportunity to undermine the 'collectives' from within and perhaps to eventually regain your own 'humanity' in one way or another... if the 'hive collective' totally collapsed and you were eventually allowed to think for yourselves again... in my opinion... even if the borg process or the Cyber process couldn't be reversed in the engineering sense and you remain in those bodies of armour or whatever... you'd still eventually be human again even if you are still trapped within an armoured body would'nt you?... just my two cents worth lol!... cheers.

Yup, I tend to agree.

Thus, in the end, "assimilation is futile" ... and the previously assimilated get to see and learn and experience all sorts of new stuff along the way before finally escaping. :)

However, to really bring this back to Doctor Who and in a somewhat disturbing way, I ask, what lurketh within the metal shells wot are the (somewhat) sworn enemy of The Doctor ?

From wiki:

Daleks are cyborgs made from their original forms, extraterrestrial Kaleds from the planet Skaro, genetically modified and integrated within a tank-like robotic mechanical shell. They were created by the scientist Davros during the final years of a thousand-year war against the Thals.

As we all know, Daleks are biological. Living flesh in a can. Hideous mutant creatures disguised in elegant and functional mobile life-support tanks that are also Tanks. Tony Stark wannabees, and all that. ;) :)

I wonder if, given the choice, they would prefer to be cocooned (if not imprisoned) in metal cans like that rather than returned to presumed former glory of being utterly biological.

I also wonder, given time, if humanity's own "trying to play God" with genetics, falling sperm counts, genetic loading, IVF (ie, forced gestation of that which "nature" has basically said no to), that we will one day be reduced to being hidden hideous creatures depending upon life support systems in over glorified wheel-chairs

...just imagine what kind of twisted creature would be created if the Cybermen managed to assimilate some living flesh of a Dalek into the iron suit of a Cyberman?... that would be one maniacal Cyberman with a total 'exterminate...exterminate' mentality lol!... the mind boggles...

...sorry Mudcake I beat you to the punch with the Gallifreyan translator link thingy on the previous page... it's a fun program isn't it?... cheers.

The 50th anniversary of Doctor Who will be celebrated with special screenings of two episodes at New Zealand cinemas. The screenings will coincide with a 3D Doctor Who projection on the grand facade of Customs House at Circular Quay in Sydney.

Fans who ordered DVDs of this season's BBC series Doctor Who have started receiving them, only there's a catch: The disc contains the season's final episode, which has yet to air on TV!
