So if Turnbull loses a vote to Dutton, he said he will resign his seat immediately. When that happens, the government will lose its one seat majority. The Governor General won't be able to swear in Dutton as PM unless he can prove he has a workable majority (or at least guaranteed Supply & Confidence). It would be 4-6 weeks before a byelection could be held in Turnbull's seat. That's plenty of time for a no-confidence vote in the government, forcing a general election. Bring it on...
Ah ok, my bad. When Rudd returned, the GG swore him in as PM on the understanding he would immediately test his support in the house, which he did and which he got. Dutton or whoever would presumably get the same chance.
Turnbull would be under pressure to hang around, at least until an early election.
