BB 2025 season ratings thread

Because now it counts to the numbers you see for the reach and average. It just shows you what the split is.
Fair enough. I think "reach" is a pretty strange metric for TV stations to be telling potential Advertisers; just 1 min TV or 15 sec BVOD viewing counts.

Who knows? Maybe TV stations are trying to count every last fleeting viewer, given overall broadcast TV viewing is in freefall and has been for years.

Or maybe Reach is a useful metric for TV programs which most people do not watch from start to finish, like Olympic Games, Test Cricket Matches, etc.

I’m not familiar with the discussions around reach in Australia. But it might be published in a bit to balance the view on TV versus internet.

Sometimes people make the claim that TV is dead because a show like Big Brother might get 800,000 viewers but a video on YouTube gets 1.5m views.

But people compare two different metrics there because 1.5m views doesn’t mean you have 1.5m viewers. And having an average audience of 800,000 viewers doesn’t mean that you can’t reach more than those 800,000. The first half of the show might have 1m and the second half only 600,000.

Stating the reach balances things out again, which is why I’ve seen some countries or channels using that number.

It still has limited value for selling ads, but it’s about grabbing attention, which might then help with talking about ad sales I guess.

It might hold up on TV, but I think it's more down to there being a certain number of people watching the show on TV and keep watching it because they can't find anything better on TV.

But if you look at the views for stuff that requires active engagement, you might see a different picture. Even before they geoblocked the show in many countries, the views on their YouTube channel has gone down.

37K > 20K > 16K > 19K > 18K > 17K > 15K
15K > 14K > 12K > 16K > 12K > 12K
11K > 10K > 6K (that's when the geoblocking started) > 5.7K

They've lost half their viewers on YouTube over the first two weeks and then lost half of the remaining audience from locking them out.

Going back to this post. We see the exact same thing with the actual OzTAM ratings. The only area where the ratings for the show were somewhat steady is overnights whereas you can see a clear downwards trend for people that need more engagement to tune in (e.g. actively going to their recordings or looking for the VoD instead of tuning in at 7:30 because they don't have better things to do and watch in the moment).

The orange line represents the consolidated 7-day audience, which has declined a bit over the course of the season. But it's not because people watch less TV. Overnight ratings, the blue line, have been somewhat consistent (and if anything, even slightly growing around week 3 before dropping). Main reason that the consolidated ratings are declining is because less and less people bothered with catching up with the show, as evidenced by the green line. It's the difference between overnight and consolidated figures, e.g. the number of people that watched on the days after the original broadcast day.

It's something that should concern 10 because if people don't bother to catch up with the show, they're not as excited about the show as you might think they are.

They call it reach as in "that's a bit of a reach".
I have noticed ever since "reach" is reported, networks no longer split long shows into "winner announced / cup awarded" parts.

Although i still think "reach" should be longer, like 20 minutes, meaning TV viewers are guaranteed to see at least one ad break.
