2014 Ratings Thread

55% of content aired the FTA networks between 6am and midnight must be local content. However, I think Nine would still meet that easily, even without BB.

They have Today, Mornings and Morning News from 6am-midday (6 hours). They then have 2.5 hours of news in the afternoon, followed by Hot Seat, then another hour of News, followed by A Current Affair. In total, that's 10.5 hours of local content between 6am and Midnight, giving them 58%. Plus, they normally have a reality show at 7:30pm, which would put them well over the line.

Yes, take all the news programmes out and there isnt much time left for programming. I dont know why they all want to stretch 30 minutes of news over 60 minutes.

Stuff said in here confirming what Bleachy and others have been saying about the demos.

“Too many” stories says Big Brother producer

To non-viewers, Big Brother is nothing more than vacuous attention-seekers in a boring Reality series.
To producer Alex Mavroidakis, the show trumps all others in the Reality genre, a nightly soap with a competitive, social experiment.

If the truth lays somewhere in between then it’s up to him to select hours of footage into a compelling hour of narrative television each night.

This year’s series has its own set of challenges, including a later timeslot and lower ratings, which have attracted some criticism. But according to Mavroidakis, he has no shortage of storylines to choose from.

“We have a very outspoken cast this year. From Day One they have gone kaboom. They’re delivering us 3 or 4 storylines a day, which is actually too many, believe it or not,” he tells TV Tonight.

“We’re struggling to tell a cohesive story because there’s too much bloody going on.

“With the greatest of respect to all the other realty shows, you know there’s going to be singing and then a winner; you know there’s going to be renovating and then a winner; you know there’s going to be cooking and then a winner.

“Who the hell know what’s going to happen on Big Brother? We know there will be a winner but god knows what else will happen in the meantime.”

This week’s ‘Hotel’ task has seen division amongst the show’s veritable love-nest, which is just what it was intended to do.

“I feel the cast is just settling down and delivering,” he suggests.

“I really liked the first couple of nights of the series. I thought it worked really well with the pairs and the way we did our launch show, particularly. We were trying to get away from the traditional way the housemates came in one at a time.”

The later timeslot has also created its own subtle shift. In the younger Demos, the show continues to win.

“They’re the ones who keep us alive: that 500,000 people who will watch us whether we’re on at 4:00 in the morning or 7:00 at night. They will keep BB alive. They’re still with us and as long as we’ve got them, we’re laughing,” he explains.

“If Channel Nine want us on at 8:40 we will deliver at 8:40. If they want us at midnight we will deliver at midnight.

“There are more people between the ages of 16-39 watching BB than The X Factor and it starts an hour and ten minutes later and finishes at 10:00 at night. There are more people between the ages of 16 – 54 watching BB than Dancing with the Stars. There are 100,000 people a day Timeshifting BB. There are 100,000 a day watching BB on JumpIn.

“I can’t comment for Nine but if I had my way, and obviously I’m biased, BB would be on 7 days a week at 7:30. But I’m not a Programmer and I’m not stupid enough to bite the hand that feeds me. I have massive respect for Channel 9 for taking a major punt on a show that had a flawed brand 3 years ago.

“But of course if you asked if I’d rather have a consistent timeslot then the answer is Yes.”

Romance continues to dominate, as the story driver it has always been since its first season in 2001.

“We cast the house completely and utterly on personalities. But we are not making a big deal of the fact that Travis and Aisha are spending every waking moment together, because romance is not the big thing of Big Brother. It’s the day to day living, the social experiment, it’s conflict.

“Cat and Lawson and interesting because there’s a third party and they’re so remorseful. A love triangle will always be of interest,” he says.

“Our job as producers is to tell the story of the house. That’s what’s going on. There’s plenty of conflict and plenty of passion.”

On the question of casting, Mavroidakis says he always looks for older housemates during the annual audition tour, but there are inherent problems in finding them and having them commit.

“In an absolute perfect world you would probably have 2 in their 40s, 6 or 7 in their 30s and 6 or 7 in their 20s,” he insists.

“We saw maybe one stand-out person over the age of 35 on the tour, but traditionally on Big Brother as soon as you put in one person who is 40 plus they stand out like dog’s balls. They never have a chance and they’re the first ones out.

“They need to want to be there. But people with big mortgages, big jobs, big families, say they want to be there but when you get down to the final 20 or 30 people and you say ‘You’re about to leave your kids, your $150,000 job, your husband for 3 months’ they say ‘This is not for me.’

“Would I make any changes? Absolutely but I would have done last year and the year before as well.”

Next week a female Intruder will enter the series. Unlike current Intruder Leo, she will have seen the series on air.

“The rules of Intruders are that they absolutely can’t discuss anything that’s happened since the show’s started. But more importantly the rules of the housemate is they can’t ask,” he continues.

“So the onus is on them.”

I also ask Mavroidakis to talk me through the strategy of the first eviction, in which Gemma’s ‘schoolyard-pick’ eviction was branded as ‘bullying.’

“It’s exactly the same as getting fired in the Boardroom on The Apprentice or Tribal Council on Survivor. Gemma is potentially the most dramatic housemate we’ve had, potentially, for years. She wouldn’t have gone any other way and she didn’t give a shit (about it).

“Our plan was always to do a face to face eviction to break up the pairs. It was always going to be a one-off as a stunt to launch the series.

“I’d do it again tomorrow, no problem. If people are talking about Big Brother then we’re doing alright. As soon as they stop talking about it, we’re in big trouble.

“That to me was Reality Television. These people sign up to win $250,000. It’s not a holiday camp. It’s about putting them into uncomfortable situations and asking questions with people they’re uncomfortable with.

“We absolutely want the fun and entertainment, that is our currency, but without a bit of gristle it’s very bland meat.”

Big Brother airs Sundays -Fridays on Nine.

Along with the ratings/demo talk, that ^^^ really was a great interview all around. The comparisons to other reality shows is a good reminder how much work these guys are putting in to try to deliver us entertaining content while trying to keep us abreast of what's going on in the house. You sit there thinking ok, this is what we're going to go with tomorrow and boom! Something else happens and it changes everything. And while I'm missing the LFs (probably moreso the thread and the people in it), I'm still really enjoying this season despite not really wanting to initially.

Overnight numbers (preliminary - note that show finished after the EPG stated so expect adjustments - especially total people ranking, some demo rankings might hold up better).
Total 739,000 #9
16-39 #2
18-49 #2
24-55 #2

Better numbers now the football shows have finished. Lets hope that this leads to more people watching each episode. Although they have given a nice F.U. to us, with NO SHOW on Sunday night. We must have been typing at the same time, they were up earlier today, so was I.

I get that they would've paid big bucks for Gotham and want to premiere it after what will presumably be a huge audience for The Block's finale but this would've been a great time to shift BB to GO. Friday to Monday with no DS and no live content is a bit much for a show like this.

OMG! I forgot we don't get a show on Sunday now!

Has the no show on Sunday been confirmed for the long term? I thought it was just a one off for this week and the double episode premiere of Gotham.

Great article and As I said earlier, David Knox knows a hell of a lot more more about this stuff than I do.

Great numbers for the show last night. Hope it's not adjusted too far down. It was a well paced show with lots of interesting content.

👍

No - it's just part of their outpit deal with WB.

The 6.30pm timeslot has just been confirmed for another factual show "The Embassy" starting 19 October. Guess that 60 Minutes would follow at 7.30. So will Gotham stay on Sundays?

I am assuming Gotham will stay at 8:30, with Big Brother following at 9:30.

Oh they must've renewed it. Last I'd heard Gyngell didn't want to or if he did, pay way less because other than BBT they weren't getting anything of value so I had assumed they were picking up shows piecemeal now. Thanks for the info!

Solid numbers for last night! I wouldn't imagine it would be adjusted too much, it didn't seem to finish much later than scheduled! Seems the horrid scheduling is set to continue though sadly.

To my knowledge, they haven't renewed it yet.

The deal was from 2011-15, so given that Gotham was created in 2014, it would come as part of that deal. I think the next contract is still in negotiations.

I bet they could almost double that, if they bought back the Friday night games. Some interesting games though, like putting the bike together and riding it, not being blindfolded and fed bulls testicles. THAT isnt entertainment IMO.

The problem why they aren't telling a cohesive story is because...
1. They've put in too many housemates to begin with.
2. Consecutive double eviction means that viewers won't be attached to the housemates cause they were leaving like sex after one night stands
3. No live updates.
4. Shit as time slot. And what the fuck is up with the time slot always changing. Friday it's 8.10. Sunday it's 9.40 sometime even 10pm... weekday it's 8.30. Fuck that is late as. Who is gona wait that long..aside from diehard fans like myself and ppl on this forum lol
5. False advertisements piss ppl off. BB lied and made a big hype over the bathroom incident
6. Big brother is a fucken pussy this year. Sucking up to housemates and letting rules slide. People like familiarity when things change its hard to accept
7. Fuck the time slot changed again. Now it's 7.30, 8.30, 8.10, 9.30. When the bloody fuck is it?
8. As much as we love to hate on Shitty housemates. Casting a bunch of Shitty ppl will mean ppl may not want to watch or grow attached to them. U got to have a mix of good and evil. The public wants to root for a deserving winner.
9. Cast ppl of all age range to suit a diverse range of viewers. Why not add a fatty in.. A grandpa.. A tyranny etc make it controversial. What's so great about a one legged man and a giant. And a 31 year old girl acting like a teenager. Again need a balance between good and shit housemates... when they r shit.. Personally I wouldn't mind missing a few episodes
10. Channel 9 killed big brother this year. Shit advertisements..updated and marketing.
11. The team thing at the beginning is stupid as hell. What's the point of being in teams like snooze as fuck.
12. They need more hot people on the show. Last year there was drew..jade..tihan...Tully (?)..Matt...
they need more funny ppl on the show who actually plays the game but not in a bitch ass way.. like how last year they had Tim. He was the star. I don't really like any of the housemates this year. People grew attached to Tim last year. This year we know so little about the housemates that it ends up being that we don't give a shit about them much
