Would anyone else like Sonia Kruger replaced?

I'm a Gretel Killeen fan and yearn for the old days. However, Sonia definitely did better this year. She was much better on Dancing with the Stars when she occasionally got in trouble for things she said. Given a bit of freedom, she might actually do better on BB too.

Hmmm... I'm not so sure... She's got a lot more on the line now than she did with 7 and is at a different point in her career... I can't see her taking any risks and messing up anything given she's worked fairly hard to get to this point... Even if she'd been given total freedom...

There are jobs you take seriously regardless of the situation and there are those you don't... I feel DWTS was one she never really gave a shit about...

Ah, but she was much more entertaining Kingston. And came across a lot more naturally, I thought. The BB producers might not like the 'fun' Sonia in a BB context - but I think I would.

Trust me I know what you are talking about... I did my research before the show even launched and I totally agree with you... That being said I totally see why the situation is what it is and how she got there...

It's fairly obvious that BB isn't going anywhere and it's going to take another "turkey slap" before ratings degrade to levels that cancellation would ever be considered... So as I said before I feel that Sonia is the Julie Chen of BBAU and that as the series progresses so will her style...

I miss Gretel but she would be wasted and restricted in the Channel 9 format and the role that the host occupies within it.

I wonder how Sonia would have coped with Merlin's eviction. I imagine she would have still bravely soldiered on with her formulaic questions and her "You were a great housemate, here are your highlights" schtick.

As a good BB host should... Gretel sometimes let her personal opinions get in the way of the job she was paid to do... It's one thing to grab a hold of a situation and be a rock in the midst of chaos and another to be a bitch just because you feel it's warranted...

In the Merlin "situation", Gretel was a rock amidst the chaos and was not a "bitch just because she felt it was warranted", so quoting that instance as a reference point doesn't apply, but I can extrapolate and see that you are instead stating your general opinion about Gretel.

Sonia pretty much sums up what the show is on C9 - safe, bland, family friendly. It doesn't help she simply rehashes Gretel's old scripts - for all the problems with Kyle and Jackie O at least they did things in their own style, not in generic BB host style.

I did wonder when Shelly Craft was randomly bought in to host Showdown whether Nine had one eye on her replacing Sonia, but considering she was ditched after three episodes that seems unlikely.

You're probably right there, when there's so little time allowed for the interviews, it would be a waste of talent.

In a poor man's sense, though.

[quietly]"It's time to go....*puppy dog eyes*... [Name]"

Just doesn't live up to
[enthusiastically] "It's time to gooooooo..."

I was rewatching a bit of the first series the other day actually, and I was surprised by how Gretel announced it with so little fanfare, just "Andy, it's time to go".

I've always said I'd like Chrissy Swan, good personality, warm, funny but not afraid to say her opinion, has been there so has good insight, very engaging

To be fair, that was the first EVER eviction. After that, it changed.

Also, you have to remember that back then "suspense" before revealing votes on reality shows wasn't actually a "thing" to do. These days we just expect them to take a big pause between an announcement to build suspense, but I don't think if was very common at that stage, owing most to the fact that there wasn't really any other reality shows to begin with. But they added the suspense as the 2001 series progressed.

I imagine that if Gretel interviewed this years Housemates, most of them would have wet themselves.

"Oh, yes! Yes, Indeedy! *rubs hands together in anticipated glee, or was that wee* "Me Oh Me Oh My"

To have had Gretel interview, Tully and Ed... and not in the pre-informed, prepared way that Nine handled them, especially Tully's eviction. It would have been a great "sigh and release" for those of us pissed off that she didn't have to face up to her behaviour, choices and consequences for others.

Ed would have copped it seriously, as Gretel can't stand meally mouthed, gibbering men. I can even imagine the glint in her eyes.

I loved Gretel and grieved when she left, although she got my goad sometimes. I like Sonia and agree she was better this year. I'm happy for her to stay as I like the continuity and believe it's a job you would get better at with more time and freedom.

Hmm! Interesting choice. I absolutely love Chrissy. I agree with all the qualities you have attributed to her.

My only concern would be if she over-identified with the HM's, or some of them, and went softly softly.

Otherwise, I think she could be a hoot!

And does anyone else hate that suspenseful pause as much as I do. It has got longer and longer over the years and, for me, it is just annoying now.

I just want some kind of emotional investment, not a dress up barbie reading a cue card, I don't watch Dancing but I caught Sonia on there a few times and she was ok, because she had some connection to that world and you could tell, with BB its almost flat and dead behind the eyes for me

It doesn't help too that you've sadly now just adopted a simple UK style eviction format where it's Sonia reading out phone numbers, introducing highlights and then doing the eviction and interview. The small segment where she could perhaps show a bit more personality - talking to F&F - has been given to Mike Goldman.

Gretel in the early years was great, but in the latter years many here were happy to send her on her way.

I agree with this, the host should represent the viewers not the network.
