Manslaughter Sentence: 10 years of going to church
By Barry Leibowitz
November 20, 2012 9:01 AM

(CBS/AP) MUSKOGEE, Okla. - In the category of alternative sentencing, you can now add "going to church."

A judge sentenced 17-year-old Tyler Alred, of Muskogee, Okla., to attend church for 10 years as part of his probation, for a manslaughter conviction stemming from a drunk-driving crash.

Alred was sentenced a week ago Tuesday in Muskogee County District Court after pleading guilty in August to first-degree manslaughter in the December 2011 auto accident that killed 16-year-old John Luke Dum.

Alred cried while apologizing to Dum's family in court and hugged Dum's father as both began to sob.

Authorities say Alred registered 0.06 and 0.07 blood-alcohol content after the crash. The legal limit is 0.08 - but under Oklahoma law Alred's amount is considered to be driving under the influence of alcohol because he's underage.

Defense attorney Donn Baker said the church requirement is unusual - but he won't challenge it and that Alred currently attends church regularly.

A NAKED man shut down part of central London when he straddled a statue of the Duke of Cambridge.
It was not a likeness of Prince William that was being assaulted - but the statue of the Duke of Cambridge was the previous owner of that title, Prince George, The Sun reported.

Police closed 100 metres of road outside Whitehall - where a number of government departments are situated - to keep the public away from the potentially dangerous man on the Duke of Cambridge statue as several ambulances and police cars gathered for about three hours, Sky News reported.

"I was on a school trip, on my way to the National Portrait Gallery and I looked up and saw the naked man on the statue," school girl Savannah Severn, 16, told The Sun.

"There were police on horses pushing the crowd back and firemen were trying to get him down.

"I was really shocked but it was quite funny. It looked like he was posing and he had his arms stretched out wide."

The naked man was seen waving his arms and speaking to the emergency services on the ground as he sat astride the statue. Prince George, the Duke of Cambridge, died in 1904.

Scotland Yard police said it was believed that the man might have a knife. He was coaxed down and put into the back of a police van. He was believed to have been clothed when he climbed on to the statue.

It says they closed down that part of the city because they thought he might be a danger to the public, later on that they thought he might have a knife ... not sure where they thought the knife could be.

Ummm, I really hope this isn't "planking 2.0" ... well, unless well toned females decide to take it up that is. :D

3hrs, eh ?

I wonder if he was thinking "Suck on this Andy "15 minutes" Warhol !"

Any church ?

Like, Tom's church for example ... or any other representation of "moneyanity", etc ?

How long before the ACLU get involved in this and kick up some sort of "waa" about "cruel and unusual punishment" and "separation between church and state ... punishments" :)

The judge is a Baptist, I couldn't find what church Alred attends, but that's not the point anyway. It doesn't matter which church he has to attend, it's still a breach of freedom of religion for a judge to be making that ruling. The ACLU have said they're looking into what action they can take, but it depends on if they're in a position to do it.

There's also the issue that a judge is knowingly giving a ruling which is illegal:

Norman said he didn't believe his sentence would pass a legal challenge -- but he doesn't believe either side will seek an appeal.

...

Kiesel said he is especially concerned in this case because the judge admits to making a decision he knows is not legal.

"The Constitution is not exercised at your discretion," he said. "You take an oath to uphold it all the time, not just sometimes."

Woman breaks into house, cleans it, leaves phone number for the police:

'Cleaning fairy' breaks in then clears up before leaving $75 bill behind for owners
November 27, 2012

A WOMAN dubbed the "cleaning fairy" must now complete 20 hours of community service after she broke into a home, cleaned it and left a $75 bill for the owners.

A judge sentenced 53-year-old Susan Warren who must now complete 20 hours of community service after she plead guilty to attempted burglary. She has been put on probation for one year.

The woman told authorities she was driving by the Westlake house and "wanted something to do."

She broke in, washed some coffee cups, took out the trash, vacuumed and dusted inside the house. Then she left a bill written on a napkin and included her phone number.

Warren says she owns a cleaning business and sometimes enters homes, cleans them and leaves a bill.

Vampire on the loose, Serbian council warns
Daily Mail
November 28, 2012
11:47AM

A SERBIAN town council has warned residents that a vampire may be on the loose.

That's right, a vampire.

Sales of garlic are reportedly soaring as the council of Bajina Basta issued a public health warning after the legendary windmill home of vampire Sava Savonovic collapsed.

The vampire is Serbia's most famous monster, and the village mayor Miodrag Vujetic said residents were frightened.

"People are worried, everybody knows the legend of this vampire and the thought that he is now homeless and looking for somewhere else and possibly other victims is terrifying people," he said.

"We are all frightened."

The local council has advised residents to put garlic in their windows and doorways in order to ward off the vampire.

"We have also reminded them to put a Holy cross in every room in the house," Mr Vujetic said.

A RUSSIAN grandmother has been brought back from the dead twice - and was just minutes away from being cut open for her autopsy.

In a bizarre case that has left her family traumatised, Lyudmila Steblitskaya was left to lie in a freezing cold morgue for three days, while her relatives mourned her, the Daily Mail reports.

Amazingly, her recent near-death experience was not the first time the 61-year-old had been wrongly declared dead.

The Siberian Times said the initial problems began when Lyudmila spent several days in Tomsk Regional Clinical Hospital in October this year after feeling unwell.

When her daughter Anastasia called to ask about her mother's condition, doctors told her that her mother had died.

The devastated 29-year-old, who began planning her mother's funeral, went to the hospital to collect her body - only to be told to wait as doctors had not performed an autopsy.

Anastasia told The Siberian Times a shocked doctor told her that her mother was not dead, but was actually in her bed breathing and alive.

She screamed and ran to her mother's room, yelling her name.

"My head was so fuzzy that I didn't even think about getting back into the room, and hugging mum. Or asking her about what happened," she told The Siberian Times.

"Instead I started calling everyone, saying things like 'Er, sorry. Can you please stop digging the grave. Ah, is it done? OK... well, there won't be a funeral, my mother is alive'".

Her mother cannot remember what happened, only that she was in hospital on the Friday and then woke up in a morgue on Monday to discover that her skin was peeling off from the cold, the Daily Mail reported.

Bizarrely, the horrific incident was not Lyudmila's first near-death experience. In October this year she was declared dead during a hospital stay but this time doctors brought her back to life after several hours.

On the morgue incident, chief doctor of Tomsk Regional Clinical Hospital Maksim Zayukov, told The Siberian Times: "As of now I cannot explain why this mistake happened.

"This sad procedure has always worked in our hospital like clockwork: the moment of death is always registered by the intensive care doctor.

"Proper checks are always conducted. This all happens before the family are informed about the death'.

Fail: Porn film plays for 10 minutes during live news broadcast in Sweden
News Limited Network

11:57AM

VIEWERS of a Swedish news channel got more than they bargained for while watching a sober report on Syria's president Bashar al-Assad, as a porn film played on a studio screen in the background.

The incident took place during a Monday broadcast on 24-hour Swedish news channel TV4 News as the presenter was interviewing the station's Moscow correspondent.

As the journalists discussed Russia's support for the Syrian regime, a pornographic film began playing on one of the television screens situated behind the anchor.

"At first I realized I was looking at a naked woman and it quickly became clear she was having sex," Swedish news website The Local quoted one viewer as saying.

The erotic film - though blurry - was visible behind the presenter for about 10 minutes during the broadcast.

TV4 news editor Andreas Haglind confirmed that the adult film had been shown live, but claimed that didn't mean that a member of staff was actively watching porn.

He said it was likely screen was likely tied to a computer server elsewhere in the studio connected to other channels operated by TV4.

Swedish media was quick to report the gaffe.
