THE VIRUS 2020 - the good, the bad, and the ugly

I find it very strange that covid becomes such a political thing yet left and right leaders around the world have done radically different things irrelevant of which side they lean, and nobody has been 100% perfect.

In my opinion some things are the fault of the leaders, and could have been managed and done better, and some things are not. This includes Dan Andrews, Donald Trump, Scott Morrison, Boris Johnson, Jair Bolsanaro, and Jacinda Adern to name a few.

I think what is more interesting is what happens when something does go wrong; how they dealmwith the responsibility and how they go about damage control. This is a sign of their leadership abillity.

Dan is currently in damage control. The past couple and next few weeks will say a lot to me about Dan's responsibility and leadership than whether the guards were hired in the first place.

"Melbourne is plague-ridden city in a basket case state led by a man who is a lethal mix of political rat cunning, PR spin, unwarranted self-belief and sheer utter incompetence. Even then, he stands head and shoulders above the 'brain trust' of his ministry... most of whom would find running a bingo night a challenge, let alone managing the complex across multiple government agencies and departments that's needed to beat this pandemic" - Peta Credlin

Why weren't there issues with other companies in Victoria?

Their job is also not to deal with a serious contagion, it's to ensure people stay in quarantine. They ignored their job.

The people in quarantine might be carrying the contagion. Isn't the purpose of hotel quarantine to prevent overseas acquired infections from spreading to the community? In my opinion security guards aren't the type of people who should do this job. The situation should be treated as a biohazard managed by people with specialist expertise

The media has been terrible through this, but it's not new I felt the same with Brexit and this whole BAME story as well. It's got to such an extent that some media has lost credibility even when it's needed. The problem is it's obvious when agendas are pushed behind particular new stories. I don't know how it is in Australia but I doubt it's that different.

Nobody's saying it couldn't have been handled better in most places, but even now not everything is known about why the virus has spread in some places more than others. All kinds of guesses are made but there are plenty of mysteries with some places that have avoided the worst of it so far. Whatever the final answer is it won't be a simple one reason tabloid headline thing. At the start decisions had to be made quickly in some areas which receive much international travel. Some managed to pick what turned out better in the short term but there was no certainly in that then. The WHO were supposed to lead the whole response but they didn't really know what to recommend either and went the more conservative route without too much government interference (apart from testing, which very few areas had immediate capacity for). Even the statistics are counted differently from place to place, according to both ability to count and the actual measures used to count.

To just do simple comparisons with completely different kinds of places (size, age, number of large cities etc etc) is a typical mainstream media thing but it doesn't tell enough about a story which hasn't even reached its conclusion yet anyway. Obviously lockdowns can't continue forever either. So the best step would appear to be to use masks in indoor public areas or outside if in a crowd. This even though we don't know for sure if it helps a huge amount, but there's no harm doing it. And that combined with social distancing and people isolating themselves if they feel symptoms. Though I thought the asymptomatic ones are supposed to be more infectious anyway. Once it gets going it's hard to stop, but not all areas suffer the same amount. Did lockdowns or the approach of Summer help more in Europe, or just a change in behaviour, probably a mix of things. To complicate things more there are different strains of the virus in different parts of the world, it mutates, maybe to become more infectious or maybe to become weaker.

One thing it does show is there isn't much co-operation worldwide, when you do get a crisis things won't be resolved internationally. If this gets worse or there is another crisis which is even worse then it's hard to be that optimistic.

This thread really shows by the bias by the left. If a Liberal party member were the Premier of Victoria, no doubt they would be criticising them if they performed like Daniel Andrews.

You are all pathetic.

I don't know enough about all the politics of what has and is happening in victoria right now to have give an informed decision one way or another at this stage, but I have been watching the videos you have been posting to hear what some of the concerns are.
Good thing.
ok so at least dan is doing some things right?

Other than common sense I don't think there's anything commendable about deciding to enforce mask use at this point. The pandemic has been going on for months.

good social distancing happening in these pictures! it is good that is madatory but it does seem to have come with the inevitable rush to buy that is a big risk at this time.

I think the mask wearing at Coles has already gone up to about 2/3 today from about 1/3 earlier in the week.

There wasn’t enough masks to go round and community transmission was low during the first peak. The situation is different now.

The current situation maybe could have been less severe if wearing masks was common a bit earlier. At least recommending them after the uptick in community cases might have helped in my opinion. Now there seems to be an urgent rush after community transmission has become serious.

I ordered masks yesterday but they are delayed due to demand. Are you kidding me? It's going to take weeks to receive them now.

Do you have a winter scarf to wear around your nose and mouth until masks become available, anything as long as your nose and mouth are covered.
Good luck with it. It's awful.
