The Tallulah Thread Part 2

Oh there's no end to strange names. What about women that have male names?

Royalty and religion among Victoria’s banned baby names

PARENTS are being banned from naming babies after everything from TV shows and body parts, to the late Princess Diana and the Lord.

The law is saving children from a lifetime of humiliation - kooky monikers like “Honest Mary” and “Fireman Sam” are among those that have been rejected.

Although the Victorian naming police last year gave the stamp of approval to names inspired by condiments such as Pepper, music (Jazz) and even a baby called Reef, the line was drawn at royalty, religion and the ridiculous.

One couple thought Princess Diana would be a fitting name for their daughter, but were given the royal heave-ho by Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria.

Applications for Prince and Princess were similarly given the royal flush as titles and ranks are a no-go under Australian law.

The Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act also deems as prohibited those names which are obscene or offensive, cannot be established “by repute or usage”, are too long or contain symbols such as exclamation and question marks.

A couple conjured up Wonderful Beautiful for their bub, while another were inspired by TV’s latest bikie hit with the name Anarchy.

They were sent back to the drawing board, along with a family which would have needed a miracle to name their child Lord. Another unconventional (and misspelt) title, Glory Hallelujah New Covernant, failed to make the cut.

Names rejected in 2014 will remain a mystery as the department has refused to release its most recent lists to the Sunday Herald Sun.

The Krieg family, of Staughton Vale, struck it lucky after last year rolling the dice with the name Texan Gamble.

While the Kriegs are an anti-gambling family, the middle name Gamble is symbolic in another way.

“We took a big gamble to have our last boy, Texan, and it paid off so that’s why we named him that,’’ his mother, Shell Krieg, said.

“I had two miscarriages before having Texan and he came three weeks early and was jaundiced. But he’s a happy baby now.

“We just wanted four kids, but had lots of trouble along the way having them.”

Mrs Krieg said the family was known in the area as Shell and the T-team - as Texan is one of five males with the initials TG.

There’s dad Timothy Gordon, and sons Tyron Gordon, 9, Tayten George, 7, and Tazman Giles, 5.

Mrs Krieg said that in hindsight, they were lucky Texan Gamble’s name was given the OK.

“The registry probably thought we were full-on gamblers but we are not, we live in the country and are not the least bit interested in the casino or the pokies,” she says.

From the USA social services...

The Social Security Administration just released its 2013 list of baby names in the United States. And once again, Game of Thrones rules. There were 1135 Aryas, 241 Khaleesis and 67 Daeneryses born in 2013. And 15 Theons and five Robbs. But some new names also came on the scene.

For one thing, there were eight girls named Brienne last year — apparently thanks to the Game of Thrones character. There were 10 girls named Bellatrix as well.

According to Nameberry, the most popular new girl's names of 2013 include Vanellope — apparently inspired by Sarah Silverman's character in Wreck-It Ralph? There were 63 Vanellope's in 2013, up from zero in previous years. Other popular new girl's names are Pistol, Prim, Rarity (from My Little Pony?), Charlemagne and Rebelle.

Brand new boy's names included Rydder, Jceion, Hatch, Tuf, Lloyal, Xzaiden, Charger, Kyndle, Power, Warrior, Kaptain, Subaru, and Vice.

Other interesting stuff: There were 12,270 boys named Logan — but also 704 girls named Logan. Good work, Wolverine. And there were 20 girls named Nyx.

But there were only 17 girls named Katniss in 2013, which seems lower than previous years.

...seriously... some of those parents need a severe slapping for doing that to their children... what is wrong with those people?... just imagine when those poor kids go to school... especially 'Moo... Kaptain and Coal'... the nasty things that they are going to hear from other kids... what about when one of those boys grows up and meets a girl at a club... chats her up and she asks him his name and he says... 'Moo'... he'll die a virgin for sure... cheers.

So true Sticky. Choosing a child's name is actually a huge responsibility, why do some people fuck it up so royally? Maybe if parents had to be held financially liable for the trauma someone is likely to endure with anyo of the above names they might start taking it a bit more seriously.

So what’s in a name?

Well, parenting website Kidspot delved into it, of course. According to a previous post, Dr Simon Laham of the University of Melbourne’s Psychological Sciences Academic Centre says, “names carry a lot of information”.

In a study in which he collaborated with researchers from New York University’s Stern School of Business, he found that people with easy-to-pronounce names were more likeable and more successful than those with hard-to-pronounce names.

“It’s due to a phenomenon known as processing fluency,” Dr Laham says. “If a name is easy to pronounce (such as Ben and Kate), it is judged as being more familiar, and more positive.”

A safe, easier-to-pronounce name may in fact prompt a child to excel in life, according to Dr Laham’s study with Dr Adam Alter from New York University.

In the study, the first and last names of 500 US lawyers were analysed and “it was found that those lawyers with the most pronounceable names were promoted faster than their unusually-named counterparts, even though they had comparable skills and experience,” says Dr Laham.

Not to be taken too seriously

It’s all a bit of fun of course – in fact School Stickers’ managing director Neil Hodges, says, “The annual ‘Santa’s Naughty and Nice list’ is just a bit of fun, and obviously there are many Ellas and Josephs that are perfect little angels, just as I’m sure there are many Amys and Jacobs that can be a bit of a handful. School Stickers has been trusted by thousands of schools to reward pupils for good behaviour and achievement ever since it was created by a teacher in 2000. We’re proud that our products motivate and inspire young people, whatever their names!”

We agree – of course this list isn’t the be-all and end-all. Except for “Ella” on the naughty list – we’re looking at you Kidspot editor Ella Walsh.

What names do you associate with being naughty and nice?
