TBL Families

I have eaten well past being full and comfortable many times, but not as an everyday thing at all. There are obviously major psychological issues going on here, I hope lots of counselling is provided on set beyond what the trainers provide.

I completely agree. I think they know the amount they eat is way way way way too much, hence hiding it like that one woman. I actually did feel sad for them too.

I can see how they do eat themselves emotionally away. But I can't truly understand how it can get so bad either. It's terrible how I was thinking, but wall-e the kids movie came to mind, grown ups just sitting in a chair that moves for them eating whatever and haven't a clue about the outside world. It really sounds terrible, but I did honestly feel sad for them

Yeah, I do the freezing thing too. Excellent when you don't feel like cooking and stops me from buying junk food lol Although I'm pretty bad at scoffing chocolate and ice cream at night.
Well I even have some sweet things I can pre make lol. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing to be a pre diabetic as it means I really try and I really do to avoid eating A LOT of sugary snacks, it sucks because I am more of a sweet tooth kinda gal. Lucky I have some recipes to keep that at bay lol

I agree... It was sad. These people know that they are eating too much and they know that their waistlines are too big and they knew they were getting bigger long ago. People will ask questions like "how can you get that big?" but it's not that simple. It is an addictive behaviour like anything else and it's even harder because food is a part of life, it's literally required to stay alive. It's so primal to want to eat whenever you can, you look at babies or animals in the wild, it's only humans who have the opportunity to actually do it. Humans and domesticated pets are the only sentient creatures with obesity problems, but I don't think that's just because food is available to us.

It's really complicated. I've never been overweight and I won't pretend to know what it's like or to know the mentality that gets someone to that point, but I do know what it's like to not feel like you're in control or to feel like a situation is hopeless.

For these contestants it's not as simple as putting down the fork and going for a walk, nor is it for the large majority of obese or even overweight people.

Sorry, slight tangent there! I digress...

It feels shameful.

I definitely agree with all you said. No need to apologise because you paint a much needed understanding picture.

It's hard to understand when you are not them, and it's easy to judge them, and I think without meaning to you can judge. I know I am and I don't mean to, and I think like the trainers it's just wrapping your mind around it. Which is why I suppose they are doing this eating like them thing.

As someone who is overweight and possibly due to my height, obese, it's not easy to just stop and eat well. The food habits collected along the way for years and the things that triggered those habits, aren't always just going to go away. I won't watch the show regularly as it's distressing for me. Mind you, I am nowhere near the sizes of these people. Now with my knee issues, due in part to my weight, I am paying for it. I am beginning to get panicky about not being able to exercise. Physio this morning so I'll ask about it. Unless you've done any sort of walking in any shoes of others, it's looking at it from the outside. To be open and transparent I am 156cm and about 92kg.

It doesn't help when the nature of the show sets it up as a voyeuristic thing - "look how fat this woman is" "look how much this man eats" etc. They do try to make them sympathetic but it's so easy to judge or make assumptions and hopefully this show can shed some light on it.

I think it's great having the trainers live like the contestants. Obviously it's good viewing but it's the only way the trainers can begin to understand what it's like. It's easy for any of them to say eat a salad and go for a run but they've probably done that their whole life and don't know the physical and emotional barriers the contestants face each day. It'd be if someone like Ivanka Trump (born into immense wealth but also very hard working) called struggling middle class people lazy for not having her lifestyle - she can't begin to relate.

I might be giving the producers too much credit and they're probably just interested in creating good viewing.

Well hopefully the show does help the average viewer to get into the contestants mind better and understand that it's rarely as simple as making a conscious decision to change every habit. I admit I am looking at it from the outside but I do, as with almost everything, try to be sympathetic or see both sides.

Hopefully your physio gives you the ok for some kind of exercise today. The show over emphasises training - which is important for general health and obviously helps weight loss - but nutrition is where you'll get most of your results so don't fret too much if they say to rest.

that would be a family shared dinner. It didn't look appetising to me though. I need colour in my burritos
I love carbs and Mexican:tongue:
Everything else on there was a bit too greasy but admittedly that burrito had appeal.

But yeah they usually have some greens in those, I suppose those boys probably asked to get it without!

With regards to exercise you've got plenty of low weight bearing options, I think people think you gotta do all the fashionable looking exercises like deadlifts or squats but a lot of the time those exercises aren't for beginners.

Just pick your physios brain that's what they're there for:smile:
And of course this show is terrible for their joints for exercise.

I think we all have addictions. I think accepting someone an addiction, and helping them, is far more fruitful than judging them.

oh, and also:

Working Shifts, or nights don't help :(

I carried a bit of weight , when I was in my 30s - but got rid of it by heaps of walking and a set eating plan. I did Weight Watchers and lost 1kg per week - think I got rid of 13kgs to be normal weight and have maintained that.

These days, I live in a huge place, with heaps of stairs - and those stairs I reckon keep me in check. I am working now, part time in a Cafe and the Boss ALWAYS wants me to test out food, or is passing off wrong orders cooked OMG - I have to be really vigilant!

I am not really a 'food eater' - I see it as a necessity. Saying that, if I had to give up a glass or two of fine vino - I might change my habits to ICE CREAM :) - BTW MY Favorite is Mint Choc Chip LOL

My physio put me on squats today. Just as well I love them. I do have some weights at home but prefer the gym. Going up stairs is great, down not so great and as @hooleydooley said, walking is good. Far and fast like normal aren't good for the time being and yes, shift work is a bugger. I am however fitter and healthier than a lot of people I know who are trimmer than me. I do have a 6 pack, it's just floating in a keg :)
