BEN Zabel has spoken out for the first time about his suicide attempt last month.

The former Big Brother star joined Studio 10 co-hosts Ita Buttrose, Jessica Rowe and Natarsha Belling on the couch and opened up about his battle with depression and mental illness, detailing the day he tried to take his own life by overdosing on prescription medication.

“It had been a day that had been pretty much like any other day,” the 32-year-old said. “I think a lot of the time when we think of suicide, I know for me, I’ve learnt a lot about life through television and movies and you kind of think about writing the note, putting on your nicest outfit and all of that sort of thing.

“But it wasn’t a premeditated, well thought out thing. It was just an overwhelming feeling of darkness and of despair and I couldn’t imagine a future that had me in it.”

The 2013 contestant was treated by paramedics on the scene in his apartment in November and was later transported to The Royal Brisbane Hospital. He admitted, while he’s not yet fully recovered, “things are better for me than they were.”

Zabel added: “I was alone and I was home and I know people think, ‘why not call someone?’ You don’t feel like it.

“A lot of the time if you have an illness or perhaps even an addiction the last thing you want is help, it’s very hard to be reached.”

Zabel has spoken publicly in the past about his long-term struggle with severe anxiety and depression. Earlier this year, the former flight attendant opened up about his dismissal from Virgin Australia in early 2013, saying he was let go by the airline because he “wasn’t fit to fly”.

The Brisbane based TV personality told the Studio 10 live audience, “I was home and I was alone and I just needed some relief so I took my prescribed medication, as per the dosage. But it wasn’t enough, I was still hurting, I was still in pain, so then I just took some more ... and that led to me going unconscious.

“It wasn’t a cry for help ... no, it was intentional and I was taken to hospital and I was there for quite some time. It was a very serious incident.”

Jessica Rowe, who has spoken of her battle with Post-Natal depression in recent years, asked Zabel how he was going now and if he was receiving the necessary care and support.

Zabel replied: “It takes a village, you can’t do it on your own ... I’m certainly getting the care that I need both on an emotional front and also on a medical front as well, and in a way just in being here, this is therapy for me too.”

Somehow these photos of the housemates doing basic stuff seems so trivial after reading that article about Ben. I'm really shaken by it. I have always been a fan and I hate that he suffers so much. I'm so happy he didn't die and that he is fighting his illness.

I believed it was an unintentional mix up. I didn't know he was unconscious when found.

My friends mom committed suicide by an overdose of antidepressants. She drove to her church parking lot and took the whole bottle, which a doctor gave her a few days after she had been released from the hospital for a breakdown. My friend was a senior in high school.

Maybe that is why I'm so upset.

Thank goodness Ben was found in time and was helped.

Tim Dormer says his Graceland trip with Ben Zabel is still going ahead

Tim Dormer has opened up about Ben Zabel’s battle with depression, revealing they are still planning a trip to Graceland together despite Zabel’s overdose last month.

“The tickets were booked this week,” Dormer told Confidential. “I said to him ‘mate, we don’t have to do this trip to Graceland, only if you want to’ and he said ‘no, it’s what I need, to get out there’.”

The pair, who were Big Brother housemates last year, have maintained a close friendship since being on the Channel 9 series. Dormer said he was very distressed by news of Zabel being treated by paramedics at his Brisbane home last month, then hospitalised after an overdose.

“It was serious and really scary,’ Dormer said. “The good thing that’s come out of it all now is he’s getting the help that he needs, it’s kind of like he was suffering alone. I think with a lot of people with depression and anxiety ... there are people out there that will help, you’ve just to be brave to ask for it.”

Dormer joked that he keeps pestering his friend over the phone, whether he likes it or not.

“I think it’s about having people around you as well, friends who just ask “how are you going?” I call him every day or two — he hates it,” Dormer said.

The pair had been planning trip to Graceland together, for a documentary. Zabel revealed on Big Brother that he had always dreamt of visiting Elvis Presley’s home and Dormer promised he would use some of his prizemoney — $250,000 — to fund the trip.
Now it is still going ahead, Dormer said he hopes it will make a bit of a difference to Zabel (combined, of course with the treatment he is receiving from medical professionals).

“The whole story behind it is me wanting to take my good mate, sort of get him out of the apartment that he’s made his little cave and go on an adventure,” Dormer said.

Zabel has returned to performing for his current stand-up tour and Dormer said “he’s really well”.

The pair will head to the US on January 5.
