I assume he means "unwarranted," because if the adulation isn't wanted, I don't think we're talking about the same group of people.

That's a bit of a specious argument there Nathan you quitter. Over half the population say they're Christians according to the census. They might not be particularly devoted or observant, but they still identify. Your hate is unjustified.
