Am I getting this right - people think he's awful for not drinking/for thinking more women need more self-respect?
What he said about women was a bit harsh, and I don't think all women who are disrespected are also disrespecting themselves. However, he has a point in a way. There are a lot of women who complain about how men are now, but a lot also accept/take it. That just perpetuates the system. So, as much as his comment was douchey and blunt, it has some validity to it in some way. As a woman, I just don't put up with shit from men and it's kept me away from the problems that my female friends who DO put up with that stuff experience. Unfortunately, I also know women who are like myself and have still been in awful situations (rape, etc), so that isn't to say that it's 100% down to a woman's actions/self-respect, but when women basically allow the men in their life to overtake them and treat them like dirt, how can they expect anything else? It's about taking control of yourself as much as you can. There are times when that still won't be enough, but do as much as you can. The same applies to men in those situations (toxic relationships). Ex: a man who wants an extremely intelligent woman shouldn't complain about not attracting that if he himself acts like a fratboy.
As for not drinking, who cares? Tahan wasn't a drinker either and she didn't really state her reasons, but I suspect her reasons were basically the same. She was concerned with her physique as he is, but she also wanted to avoid the other ramifications as I'm sure he does too. Too many people DO rely on alcohol as a social crutch. I personally drink, but I love it when someone can enjoy an alcohol-free life and still have lots of fun. He seems really fun without it, too, so I think it's great that he backed up that comment.
So far, he seems like a genuinely great guy. Yes, he's also the best looking (IMO) but I'm shocked at how caring he's come across so far. A lot of you assume he has a huge ego. Why? Because he's a highly attractive guy who leads a different type of life? Sounds like the people who are really preoccupied with that maybe have some issues and see him as that judgmental guy who'll make them feel bad about themselves.
