Last movie you saw

There's no need for it, and regardless whether the intent was to be scathing to gay people, there was a certain recklessness to it by the producers. I don't think prejudice is any better just bacause it is casual prejudice and not overt, in some ways the casual stuff is more insidious, as it is giving a rubber stamp to bullying motives IMO.

And for straight people to say it's ok, I'm sorry, but it's not your ox being ridden. So it's a bit different if you're on the recieving end.

Yeah i agree that it's not proper for straight people to go, oh this word that is hurtful to you, we've decided it's no longer hurtful.

I do think though there's a point to, a word has whatever power people let it have. Though i'm coming from a position of, nothing really offends me at all. I understand it's not my place to tell others what's right or wrong with that offends them.

It's hard to follow and it's a really strange storyline, I spent most of it thinking wtf? it wasn't that great but it's one of those movies where once you start watching it you really have to know what the hell is going on so you're stuck watching it.

Speaking of which I thought Inception was pretty meh...... Not surprised it was in the bargain bin.

Yeah, Up All Night, other people have told me the same thing, ie take the word on and embrace it, divest it of its power etc. And I'm not opposed to use of the word in every context, because context and intent is a lot of the relevance. Here (in the opening of that particular movie) I think the context and the intent was to insult gay people and/or to establish the movie's credentials as squarely a straight man's movie (despite the all male ensemble cast and lack of substantive female characters).

That would all be very well to "just ignore it" or otherwise disempower the word, but unfortunately I think that idea only takes us so far, and there are still problems as coverage in the US late last year tells us. If there was negligible homophobia in society, then not such a problem.

Also, I think it is rather convenient for those spreading the hate if we let them off so lightly, and I'm not inclined to do that. Some people are, that's up to them. One only has to look at the comments on youtube scenes of such movies etc to see the morons it attracts, believe you me these morons do see it as validation of anti gay views.

After reading the reaction to the screenings at Cannes, I really can't wait for this!
It's meant to be not only the best X-Men film so far, but the best Marvel film so far. Meant to be excellent.

Pirates 4

Saw the latest Pirates film the other day. Was quite a disappointment. You expect a certain amount of fun and excitement with these to over come any inadequacies in the plot. It didn't even do that. The entire film was under developed and basically completely uninspired. There were elements which could have been great but the writers and the director didn't do much with them. The Mermaids for instance which is one of the better things. They have an idea they just do something with it and move on. There's so many things like this.

It's as if they came up with some ideas for the film. Zombies, mermaids, shps in bottles ect. Wrote a rough outline and then never developed it. There's no story at all to invest in. You aren't swept up in an adventure. People are generally just going to the fountain of youth for the sake of it.
It just lacks the imagination and the complexity of the original three. Even the third which completely lost the plot, still had spectacle, action, fun and excitement. This is low on action, basically had no fun or excitement at all.

It is so disappointing. It's not terrible, it's just kind of long and boring. Any plot or character interaction is so thin and pointless. It really needed other stories, relationships going on. It needed a Will and Elizabeth story going on through the adventure. You think back to the first three and the characters the relationships, the history to each other. There is nothing of the sort here. It's just emotionally dead.

There's also no stakes or purpose for anything. The film basically sets up to leave everyone and everything where it was when it started. No progression, the films just a side story for Jack Sparrow which has no barring at all on him. That may kind of worked for the Original films, because you had the whole Will and Elizabeth story running through them. This there's nothing of the sort.

Back to the action, a prime example is a fight in a store room of a tavern early on. It's meant to resemble the first encounter with Will and Jack in the blacksmith. That encounter actually had excitement and fun to it. This is just people jumping around swinging swords.

Everything is just stripped back that it's just a sparse, hollow empty shell of the films that came before it. It's a huge shame.

I watched Winters Bone on dvd last night, it was really good. :) It's set in the Ozark's and makes you never want to go there. Excellent movie.

Great I'm not the only person on Earth to feel disappointed.

Bits of it reminded me of the last Dr Who a week or two ago with the pirates...... Hmmmm

Super8

Despite it sorta being "Goonies in Cloverfield", LSCP and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Put it on your Must See list. :)

Oh, and make sure you stay for the credits. Tis a qool finish to it all.

We had the choice between the X-men and Super8 and decided to go for something that we knew nothing about. Makes for a better time out and bit of an escape to do something like that now and then I reckon.

For example, we saw Pirates4 more out of a sense of duty or having to. Already knowing who the main characters would be and what basically drives them but just seeing what happens next to them. Hardly refreshing and exciting when you approach it like that and I must admit that I nearly dozed off during the "fishing for mermaids" scenes coz I just couldn't care and could predict what the end result would be even if at that time I couldn't know the specifics of how it would be achieved.

I imagine I will be the same for the last HP movie. Like, we know that certain items still have to be retrieved and we know damn well they will, somehow or another, be retrieved. We know damn well that HP & HWNCBS (or whatever he is called) will have their Sherlock Holmes and Morriarty "off the cliff into the falls together" type moment, etc, etc, etc ... and that is based purely on the previews for it all, never mind reading the damned books.

All a bit of a meh to be confronted with previews of stuff when none are actually needed, and so nice to just See Something Utterly New now and then.

I want to see it because I <3 Louise Monot. I think she's only got a tiny bit part in it though. :(

Does her character die in the movie? That's the impression I git from the trailers I've seen.

Super 8

Yeah it was quite a good film. I liked it, but didn't love it. It kept me interested the whole way through, nothing lost me or anything. It just lacked something. I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it and I don't know why.

Everything was there and worked but just missed that magical element. A sense of wonder, fun and adventure.

I expect the final act to get really bad, but it didn't at all. So I don't quite get what a lot of reviewers were going on about.

Reviewers and critics are paid to be asshats...

I don't get why they bag movies either or the fact what they review seems to be a totally different movie to the one you actually see. I don't go by reviews but by what I think I will enjoy..

Yeah you always have to trust your own opinion. Although some times critics can be valuable. I find I usually just get a feeling when I read a review that sounds right to me. Even if I haven't seen the film.
