Jade 2013 Appreciation thread

People seriously comment on her spelling and grammar? I had no idea. It's so incredibly rude.
Also, I did not realize that she considers English her second language. Does anyone here know the general timeline of her childhood? For some reason I thought she was mostly raised in Australia, though even in an English speaking country, if Italian was spoken the majority of time at home, English would still be considered her second language.

She moved to Aus when she was 4-5 I think. Early language skills start appearing before you're 1 usually and between 2 and 3 is when most of your vocab is developed. So yeah, considering your language is well developed before 4-5 I'd say English would be her second language. Obviously she'd pick up most things having lived in Aus for so long, but it would be more challenging given her early language skills would have developed in Italian and her dyslexia that would have impacted on her reading/writing anyway.

Yes Jane, a lot of people have been criticizing her grammar and spelling. I mean, I know sometimes can be really annoying to see a misspelled word, but if you know this person has difficulty when she writes because has dyslexia and also writes in her second language, is quite understandable and is better not say anything about it..... I also thought English was her first language, but seems that she prefers to use Italian, I don´t know. it was surprising for me to read that english is her second lenguage. For some reason, she must feel comfortable speaking Italian.

So, Thanks Gemini you for explaining to us!! :)

I remember her saying in the house that since she returned to Australia, which I think (but may be wrong) is only a bit over a year ago, she has had to changed the language she thinks in. I have a feeling she was living and working in Italy for around 3 - 4 years, so she would have been totally immersed in Italian

The fact that she is so fluent in both languages (who here would guess from listening to her that English isn't her native language?) to the point that she thinks in both languages is a sign of full fluency. It's the gold standard of language acquisition. What's more, studies show that people who think in two languages usually exhibit both higher level reasoning and a better ability to switch and maintain focus.

Now I want to ask her if she experiences her dyslexia differently in the two languages. It fascinates me, because bilingual individuals who are fully fluent in two languages but hampered by dyslexia when it comes to the technological aspect of translating language into written form are not easily identified so the research in the area of dyslexia and bilingualism is still wanting. There is some confusion and question over the interaction of bilingual education and dyslexia.

It breaks my heart though, that the scholastic struggles Jade experienced as teenager are back to haunt her at this time where she has gained so much confidence in herself. So many of her insecurities clearly stemmed from those difficulties and she so often refers to herself as lacking intellectually when that is not the case. I wish BB had cared enough about her in the house to have aired the discussions she had with others on the matter so that people wouldn't be so quick to judge her now.

This makes me want to try and find Jade on Facebook, and send her a lovely message. Jades's spelling was absolutely fine, especially when you stop and think of how amazing she was at speaking in Italian. I wasn't always able to sit in front of Big Brother, as I would be trying to get other chores done as well. But the day Jade started talking in Italian to a male voice she could hear, I dropped everything and sat in front of the TV so impressed with her, and I noticed a few of the Housemates were as well. I think it might've been her Dad Fabio talking. And so many people were raving on about her Dad. Yes, of course he is good looking, but I saw some comments about her Mum which upset me. I paid close attention whenever Mike Goldman was talking to the families in the front row, and surely others here noticed Jade's Mum had the most beautiful smile, and I immediately saw where Jade inherited her smile from. :D And how many BB viewers could speak Italian like that? Infact, most people who would speak Italian that well would speak English with a strong accent. Jade actually speaks perfect English, and Italian. That's why I say she is full of surprises.

I just don't understand why people would comment on a picture, just to criticise spelling. Are they in that Much of a desperate need to feel superior that they try to make someone feel bad about themselves? I hope they feel good..

I just posted a stunning photo of Jade, but it doesn't seem to be coming out. Can you let me know if you can see it or not. You see I did a double post, so instead of going back and typing "Double Post" I decided to try and put in a photo of Jade. But I don't it's coming out. Damn. I'm going back to fix it ha ha ha. I will remove photo, but put it under this. :D

That was a picture our lovely aurora took when she saw her at the Arias!

I would have thought that her mum would have spoken English to her and her father Italian. Does her mum speak Italian?

I would imagine her mother speaks some Italian, since her dad's English is fairly weak. Having her mother speak English to her would have definitely facilitated Jade's acquisition of English. However, since she was living in Italy, surrounded by an Italian speaking world, Italian probably was her primary language as a young child. It would be interesting to know how much exposure she had to Italian after moving to Australia, since she was obviously able to keep up the fluent Italian despite being removed from that environment.

My understanding from things that she said is that she spent time there with her father and family each year. There are a lot of photos of her when she was young with her little brothers, and one of her brothers on his instagram had answered a question about whether they ever came to Australia to visit Jade by saying that she nearly always came to Italy.

There are also photos of her skiing (aged around 7-8ish) and she commented on one that her father always dressed he in funny hats - so I think she spent quite a bit of time in Italy, being Italian, on a regular basis

Thanks...I had this very vague idea of her childhood but you have filled in some detail. I really miss the old days where live feeds would have allowed us to actually hear Jade tell her story rather than us have to figure it out from the bits and pieces that make it past the BB filters plus our own research.

I think similar photos were posted previously, not sure if these are new? I can't remember Ed having carrot on his shirt before ;p, Or these cute puppies

So What Did You Get Up To On Saturday Night Sapphire? Are You Out At Some Fancy Christmas Party Like All The Housemates Probably Are?

Arrrh no, I'm sitting here fiddling with the Housemates photos, while glancing at "Elf" and some dickhead is outside in my street doing donuts, my partner is at work and my cat is too busy to bother with me, cause he's following a carpet beetle around the floor. :p
