In The News

L
awyers for SKY News commentator Chris Kenny, have commenced defamation proceedings against the ABC, Chaser presenter Andrew Hansen and production company Giant Dwarf after referring to him as a “dog f***er” on The Hamster Decides.

Kenny, who also writes for The Australian, told the newspaper “The ABC has refused to apologise or make amends, leaving me with no option but to take this action.

“We all value robust debate, but disgusting, fabricated and offensive attacks aimed at silencing fair criticism are intolerable.

The statement of claim alleges the imputation the plaintiff’s “attacks on the ABC were so dishonorable . . . that he deserved to be compared to . . . a person who has sexual intercourse with a dog”.

ABC has previously said, “While strong in nature, the segment was consistent with the humour from the Chaser Team and in line with the target audience of The Hamster Decides. The graphic was clearly fake and absurd.”

But Kenny is claiming aggravated damages, a permanent restraint on any future publication of the same or similar material and interest, plus costs.

In an interview with ABC 774 last month, managing director Mark Scott said: “Personally I didn’t like it. I can understand Chris Kenny and his family being upset by it and I’m sorry about that.”

However Kenny’s son Liam wrote an online response , which said in part:

“Chris Kenny is my dad. On one of the Sky News political analysis programs he hosts, he has replied to the Chaser joke, lamenting that if his children were ever to Google his name in the future, this is the kind of filth we would stumble across.

“Heaven forbid.”

So when a News ltd puts Kevin Rudd on the front page of the paper as a fucking NAZI!!! that is OK, but on the Hamster Decides they Photoshop a picture of this fool to look like he is fucking a dog. It is not ok? Hmmm, Front page of a newspaper compared to a show that rated around 700,000 mark which aired at 8:30 at night. Everyone who watches the chaser knows what their humour is like, I love it BTW sometimes I'll watch old skits from the war on everything and even though I've seen them countless times they still make me laugh.

I say get the fuck over it, Andrew Hanson has seen worse than this anyone remember the eulogy song?

I hope that the ABC is never privatized. I've given up on the commercial networks for the most part. ATM the ABC is what I watch the most although I don't watch it on TV but on iview (which is the most user friendly catch up site). If the ABC become private it will be a very sad day indeed for me and many others who hate the late starts on 7, 9 and sometimes 10.

In the UK Rupert was complaining about the BBC and they cut a bunch of it's funding to appease him.

The big media types just don't want competition and they want to control information. It's why the right wing conservatives are so against public broadcasters and news services. Reality has a well known liberal bias and being government broadcasters they actually do have to try and be balanced and accurate. So they scream foul of it being some liberal left wing bias machine. Trying to redefine reality in the manner they want it to be.

The Andrew Bolts and the climate change non sense is a great example. They peddle an absurd false reality. Anyone that attempts to be accurate is a lefty, greenie bias machine.

Lets not forget the attempt at undermining democracy that comes from this as well. A big reason they hate public broadcasters is they provide the news for free. News channels as well as online. The Murdochs of the world want to monetize news. Remove it from a basic right in a democracy to make informed decisions. They want your only access to news to be through paying them money, and it to be what ever they want it to be.

Great post BTW, I agree with everything.

Looks like "The Ministry of Truth" that George Orwell wrote about in the book 1984 is quickly becoming a reality. If the big media tycoons of the world control the vast majority of the news I fear for not just first world countries but the 3rd world also. Who knows how many wars could be started on false information.

Can you imagine if The ABC was sold off to say news corp for example and Andrew Bolt got his wish and become the new host of Media Watch.
I would sell my TV and never buy a new one.

Justin Bieber is such a little fuckwit. I've never disliked a celebrity more than this guy. GTFO Justin!!!

HHahaha. Tell us how you really feel. lol! :) I'm not going to deny (because I have previously admitted) that I have been a fan of the Biebs. I think that he is making some terrible decisions, but he certainly is not the first 'celeb-gone-batshit-crazy.' Especially to come to fame as a kid and then go through the terrible teen years with unlimited money and the ability to do whatever the hell you want.

There's no denying he is a talented kid. I just hope he can sort himself out sooner rather than later.

(Should I admit I am going to his concert tomorrow night?????)

Yeah I know you are a fan of Justin, I'm more pissed off at how the world works sometimes, these celebrity's can do almost whatever they want and young people see them as role models when in reality they should not have that status, I mean look at that Miley, she acts like a hoar and young girls look up to her, I fear for humanity honestly.

I should also add that whilst this is COMPLETELY unacceptable and even illegal in Australia, the hotel hasn't made an official complaint. My guess is that the wall will become a bit of a draw card for them.

I can see the theory of this but I doubt it really would be. It looks like shit and who on earth would care, go out of their way for it? It just looks ugly, and the hotel may keep it initially but most people won't care and think it looks bad and it'll do harm in the long run. So it'll just be painted over in the not too distant future and forgotten.

This just reminds me of all arseholes who like to grafitti. It's just arrogant, self entitled bullshit where they have no respect for anyone elses time or property. Now you have Banksy who does some cool stuff, but every arsehole with a spray paint can thinks he's banksy and they're doing the world a favor by painting some shit somewhere.

I totally see this as Beiber being an arrogant little shit. Where he has such a high opinion of himself he feels he can do what he wants and it's a favor to people.

It's just pathetic. As much so as those pathetic arseholes who tag everything they can. Trying to find some significance in the world through destruction.

I do actually agree with you. In the long run it's not going to be good, and will need to be painted over.

I also agree with you about graffiti brats. IMO he should be made to scrape it clean himself.

Through various music forums and people I used to associate with in my early 20s. I was part of a bunch of discussions about graffiti with people who were enthusiasts. The problem is, people always point to the exception to the rule. The extreme minority of people who do some decent stuff. Like Banksy. Of course with the argument that everyone has to start somewhere. So we should put up with tagging and everything because it'll maybe one day lead to more decent graffiti artists.

Which to me seemed pretty poor logic. Also the trade off doesn't seem worth it. People of course then just jump to the 'art' justification. of course ignoring the fact that you're allowed to not like art, and whether something is or isn't art. Doesn't mean it's good and so has to be accepted.

There was such an underlying attitude of, 'I like graffiti, there for it's fine.' No concern for those that didn't like it.

My biggest issue with graffiti is that so often it's people just creating work for other people. Some person struggling to make a living, who every few days has to take time to wash the graffiti off his building. Having to spend the money they worked hard for, to repaint walls, get industrially cleaned or covered with more expensive anti-graffiti paint. This which goes on at business and at peoples homes.

The self entitled arseholes who then knowing someone has had to go to the trouble of cleaning up their mess, come back, more defiant every few days or weeks to re tag or re pain the way. A way of trying to wear that person down, trying to make their mark at the expense and aggravation of someone else. I personally think it points to some sort of untreated psychological issue. Both in trying to mark their significance and power over someone else and their property. As well as a complete lack of empathy or understanding.

People who's only way of achieving significance is to be an annoying shithead to someone they don't know. Or for having people going past a wall see their scribble and shit and most likely be annoyed. Because, lets face it, most of these guys have to be getting off by the fact they are annoying people. Making eye sores.

School children as young as 8 told they would be labelled 'racist' for missing school trip
Parents have criticised the school's "ludicrous" threats and accused it of trying to blackmail them

Parents have criticised a school after children as young as eight were told they would be punished for racism if they did not attend a religious workshop about Islam.

Angry mums and dads were sent a letter by Littleton Green Community School, in Huntingdon, Staffordshire, warning their children would be considered racist if they did not go on the school trip.

The visit to Staffordshire University - for Year 4 and Year 6 pupils - had been arranged as part of the children's "cultural education" on November 27.

Headteacher Lynn Small wrote to parents and said if kids did not attend a "racial discrimination note" would be made on the pupil's records and would remain there for their school careers.

On top of that, they were also ordered to pay £5 towards the cost of the trip.

Parents have criticised the school's "ludicrous" threats and accused the school of trying to blackmail them.

Stacy Waldron, 26, who has an eight-year-old daughter at the school, said: "I feel my child will be racist if I don't allow her to go.

"This is my choice, not hers, and she shouldn't have to pay for it."

Mum-of-four Tracy Ward added: "I was shocked by the letter. To be told my kids have got to attend this workshop is disgusting.

"Everyone should have a choice but that's my opinion and I don't want a stain on my kids' record as a result.

"They are not old enough to be called racist."

Her sister Donna, whose daughter also attends the school, said: "It's not our religion. We should have a right to stop our children going."

Another parent Gillian Claridge, 55, added: "To be told we had to pay for the trip as well was just a kick in the teeth.

"How dare they threaten to brand the children racist at such a young age. Its going to make them feel like little criminals.

"The very nature of religion is all about choice - on this occasion they were not being given any choice at all.

"It was draconian move and its left a lot of parents fuming."

...

"We believe it is important for children to find out more about different cultures.

"However parents also have a right to withdraw their children from religious activities.

"Clearly it is not appropriate for comments about racial discrimination to be made in these circumstances."

The original letter - dated Wednesday, November 20 - read:

Dear Parent/Carer,

As part of the National Religious Education Curriculum together with the multicultural community in which we live, it is a statutory requirement for Primary School aged children to experience and learn about different cultures.

The workshop is at Staffordshire University and will give your child the opportunity to explore other religions. Children will be looking at religious artefacts similar to those that would be on display in a museum. they will not be partaking in any religious practices.

Refusal to allow your child to attend this trip will result in a Racial Discrimination note being attached to your child's education record, which will remain on this file throughout their school career.

As such our expectations are that all children in years 4 and 6 attend school on Wednesday 27th November to take part in this trip.

All absences on this day will be investigated for their credibility and will only be sanctioned witha GP sick note.

If you would like to discuss this further please contact our RE Coordinator, Mrs Edmonds.

What next, one might wonder ?

He's talented??? Yeah nah he's a dime a dozen 'heart throb' that is desperately trying to hold onto his relevance.
His voice is whiney and weak at best.

...up_all_night... my friend these are two of the best posts that I have read in such a long time in regards to graffiti... these two posts sum up my exact same feelings on this subject... I am so happy that someone else sees it the way that I do... kudos for such a great outlook on this subject and of the well constructed way that you have put your opinions forward on the subject of Graffiti...

...I strongly believe that if anyone ever gets caught doing graffiti on somebodys property that they should be put in prison for 3 months for the first time offence and 3 years for the second offence... (don't get me started on the third offence!)... until they do start being hard on these people in the legal sense then they will continue to do their evil work on other peoples property... again up_all_night... thanks for some great posts... they were a pleasure to read from my point of view... cheers.

No worries. It's something I haven't put a lot of thought into, but something that it's worth while knowing your opinion about.

It's one of those things that I think there's just a level of some people fail to understand what's wrong about it. To me I think it's that part of the young male brain that makes them not see consequences. The part of the brain that makes them do stupid things, drive recklessly, do drugs, jump off things.

I don't know if it's still there, but I used to see from the trains 'Stan & Bonez' written about 100,000 times on the way to work. I think to me that summed up the level of people wanting attention. Not just content with it, they made it their mission to write that shit everywhere they could. These guys were quite notorious. To be honest I don't even know if it's still there, I have tuned out.

Some people would think that's cool or impressive. The same way someone see's a train covered in paint and admire those who broke in and spent the time. Then there's those of us who just see that's time and money now wasted by other people. A train service cancelled and people late for work.

I don't mind graffiti in some places. Some of the laneways in melbourne look cool with it, has a interesting vibe. But shit out of most places it looks horrible. I know someone with a business on a main street. Decent sized building. They were always getting tagged. Eventually they got the graffiti proof paint so it easily came off. They then glued a piece of paper to the building and drew on that. What level of pathetic shit headry does that involve? Yet the shit head fans of this will probably just think it's clever. Now I know not every one that does graffiti is that level of shit head but still. I am fine tarring them all with the same brush.

As for punishment, well firstly doing graffiti is theft. It takes time and money to repair. Whether it's a business owner, or on council property. Someone has to be paid to come and remove it. It contributes nothing, just takes.

I've seen some things in the past about putting graffiti doers in youth art programs, but I think that just fuels the notion it's 'art.' Some whole notion it's self expression with value. They should just make them go around and scrub off other people graffiti. Maybe then they get an idea of the unnecessary burden and work it creates.

I just google 'Stan + Bonez' one guy only got fined 30 grand and 250 hours of community service. Given leniency because he'd reformed his ways and it'd hurt his graphic design career. What a fucking joke. If you're in melbourne and had noticed this, it was tagged everywhere along train lines and buildings. Apparently having remorse and harm to future career means they didn't get criminal convictions. What a joke.

Shit you guys are a bit harsh!

You do realise it's mainly kids around 14 you would be shoving in a cage - and kids with problems at that.

1st, nothing to do with the issues - but I have always liked graffiti.
As a kid, it was the highlight of a train trip to the big city for me, all that amazing colourful, exotic stuff along train tracks.
It was so, wild and unexplained, and built my kid excitement for our trip.

As I said all of that isn't relevant. But I do simply accept graffiti as part of inner urban areas, that industrial kind a nasty vibe aesthetic appeals.
And I'm all for having free for all areas, for people to express themselves, cover ugly places like along train tracks.
Doesn't belong beside a suburban house though.

And now - well I have had a lot of first hand experience with kids in trouble for tagging & graffiti.
And that there is a whole culture surrounding both - and they are nothing alike.

Adult taggers are thugs and or insane. And they prey on young lost kids - boys looking for male role models in general.

Real graffiti, ie art, is a whole different thing, and they do cross over but not at all necessarily, artists tend to be secret and solitary.

Graffing is not a simple issue. And it is an ancient and primal impulse.

Interesting too isn't it, that it's kind of tribal that boys around 14 get into something dangerous.
And those I have dealt with ended up terrified and not knowing how to escape.

PS Bieber is a dickhead, and should stick to singing. Clearly his kid brain is not being supervised properly.
I do think he has singing/dancing talent, but don't take much notice

So... basically the scientists found a big pile of rocks (because that's what a fossil is...) , and decided that it was actually ancient poo made by dinosaurs.

I wonder what dinosaur their going to decide created Mount Everest...?

I wonder

Well it's a bit more than that. Fossils are not just rocks. They would examine the sight and have a theory based on the behavior of known, existing animals and known behaviors.
