World's first robot SUICIDE as family return to find cleaning gadget had turned to ash
13 Nov 2013 13:11
The Irobot Roomba 760's owners insist the device was switched off before they left the house but returned to see it had vanished
A cleaning robot 'committed suicide' by climbing on to a kitchen hotplate where it was burned to death.
According to local reports, the Irobot Roomba 760 robot is thought to have rebelled against its chores and decided enough was enough.
Firemen were called to the blaze at Hinterstoder in Kirchdorf, Austria, and say they found the remains of the machine on the hotplate.
Fireman Helmut Kniewasser said: "The home-owner had put the small robot on the work surface to clean up some spilled cereal.
"Once the robot had done its job it was switched off but left on the kitchen sideboard. The 44-year-old house owner together with his wife and son then left the house and were not home when the robot set off.
"Somehow it seems to have reactivated itself and made its way along the work surface where it pushed a cooking pot out of the way and basically that was the end of it."
He added: "It pretty quickly started to melt underneath and then stuck to the kitchen hotplate. It then caught fire. By the time we arrived, it was just a pile of ash.
"The entire building had to be evacuated and there was severe smoke damage particularly in the flat where the robot had been in use.
"I don't know about the allegations of a robot suicide but the homeowner is insistent that the device was switched off – it's a mystery how it came to be activated and ended up making its way to the hotplate."
The family are now reportedly homeless because their apartment is no longer habitable thanks to the smoke damage.
Homeowner Gernot Hackl, 44, said: "I intend to sue to get compensation. It has ruined my home as everything is smoke damaged.
"Everything is black. It's not possible to live here at the moment. I would never buy one again, you buy them to keep the place clean, not almost burn it down and ruin everything."

THE ABC is more worried about the disclosure of staff salaries and the damage it may cause to internal relations than the damage it has caused to Australia's international relations by publishing intelligence secrets obtained from traitor.
Yesterday, The Australian published salaries paid to the national broadcaster's leading presenters and senior executives. The report, by Sarah Martin, revealed that eight presenters are being paid more than $250,000 a year, putting them in the top 1 per cent of income earners. The publication of the payroll led ABC managing director Mark Scott to launch an investigation into the source of the leak. He also apologised to staff, saying he hoped it would not cause them too much trouble. Understandably, Mr Scott was "very concerned" that there was a leak of this nature. We wonder why Mr Scott was not equally concerned about the ABC publishing intelligence secrets stolen by Edward Snowden, which has far more significant implications than mild embarrassment.
The ABC has repeatedly fought Freedom of Information requests to disclose pay information for its top presenters and senior managers. This is not surprising given what some of them earn. Tony Jones, the host of the weekly television program Q&A, and occasionally Lateline, is paid an annual salary of $355,789. This would astonish even the most loyal ABC viewers. Not far behind are television newsreader Juanita Phillips ($316,454), Sydney radio host Richard Glover ($290,000), Melbourne radio host Jon Faine ($285,249) and 7.30 host Leigh Sales ($280,400). Senior management, led by Mr Scott ($678,940), routinely take home salaries of more than $300,000 a year. While the amount staff are paid is ultimately a matter for ABC management, there is a clear public interest given it involves the expenditure of public money. Taxpayers have a right to know how their money is being spent. The specific salaries should give rise to questions about how the amounts are determined. A number of astute readers may identify several oddities. For example, Fran Kelly anchors 15 hours of breakfast radio every week and is paid $255,000 a year. Barrie Cassidy hosts just two hours of television a week and is paid $243,478 a year. Quentin Dempster presents 30 minutes of television each week and is paid $291,505 a year. Former Media Watch presenter Jonathan Holmes took home $187,380 for hosting a 15-minute weekly television show.
The Australian's report came just two days after the ABC partnered with the left-wing Guardian Australia website to publish Australian intelligence secrets obtained illegally. The ABC reported: "Documents obtained by the ABC and Guardian Australia, from material leaked by the former contractor at the US National Security Agency, show Australian intelligence attempted to listen in to Mr Yudhoyono's telephone conversations." The stories were repeatedly tweeted by Mr Scott, as were additional stories reporting the fallout and damage caused to the Australia-Indonesia relationship. But when it concerns a leak from the ABC, Mr Scott did not congratulate the publisher or the leaker. The hypocrisy is breathtaking. In 2011-12, the ABC received $1.03 billion in taxpayer funds. Nearly half this amount, $465 million, was spent on wages, superannuation and other entitlements. It may not be national security secrets but it is of interest to our readers and to ABC viewers.

This is a government taking an axe to big government.
They’re not even sending their environment minister, who’s thankful he’s got more than one ministerial portfolio, to the COP19 meeting in Warsaw and what’s more, the language being employed is unequivocal. The junior representative turning up at Warsaw carried the “leaked” message that Australia – “will not support any measures which are socialism masquerading as environmentalism”. That tell it like it is form of words will probably be on the headstone of what looks to be the final annual climate conference of any significance.
The fallout is of course unfolding. The home-grown media is tearing its hair out and rending its garments like a distraught drama queen having an attack of the vapours but the ordinary person, once you get outside the ambit of stylish chatterati circles, is pleased as punch with a bit of muscular government which is for once doing what they wish for a change. The red light going off for climate alarmists is that Australia’s gutsy stance was backed within days by Canada and there’ll be more. The first girl has left the party and instead of being talked about, will shortly be joined by the rest.
I wrote an article last year about what I saw as the alarming erosion of basic democracy in Australia. All those bad bad signs were there. Censorship, a phoney political choice, a media which was a grovelling mouthpiece of government, attacks on free speech, a proposed Soviet style Finkelstein regulation of even blogs and the petty bureaucratic intimidation of any small opposition like the Thompson family. Of all the countries threatened by creeping totalitarianism masquerading as caring for the planet, Australia was the one on the very cusp of tipping over into that nightmare abyss.
Instead of that disaster happening, within the space of a year it’s turned around big time, delivering a long overdue kick up the arse to its political establishment, reasserting its right to national prosperity and shucking off the foreign UN vampires wanting to feed on its lifeblood.
If it was going to be anyone, it just had to be the bloody Aussies. Well done you bunch of diggers.
I hope that the ABC is never privatized. I've given up on the commercial networks for the most part. ATM the ABC is what I watch the most although I don't watch it on TV but on iview (which is the most user friendly catch up site). If the ABC become private it will be a very sad day indeed for me and many others who hate the late starts on 7, 9 and sometimes 10.
OMG another finding of slaves - 3 women kept prisoners for 30 years!
London, one is though the have been born into slavery and has never seen the outside world.
Wow, these slavery things are so weird, so scary.
People need to get more involved in their community and to get to know their neighbours - I am quite amazed at how many people don't know or speak to neighbours, might help.
How about you? Do you know your neighbours?

Actually it IS about marriage. If a homosexaul union can be called marriage, it will be regarded as normal. Homosexuals simply want their errant behaviour classed as normal so they can escape man’s condemnation. Of course they cannot escape God’s!
the GG’s call for people to love and marry whom they choose, goes beyond homosexual marriage, it allows polygamy and incest.

"Just as Chairman Mao did to millions…"
Big surprise. Followers of a totalitarian ideology are totalitarians at home:
The couple who allegedly beat and brainwashed three women for 30 years in a south London home were leaders of an extremist Maoist collective, it has been claimed…
Mr and Mrs Balakrishnan, now confirmed to be aged 73 and 67, were well known to police and security authorities in the mid 1970s after setting up an extreme left wing squat in a bookshop called the Mao Zedong Memorial Centre in Brixton....
