The number of people hit by the Rudd government’s shock overhaul of tax benefits for cars is more like 550,000 according to the car leasing industry, dwarfing by almost double the 320,000 claimed by the government…

Fleet management company Fleetcare will shed up to one quarter of its staff base after new leasing business dived by 95 per cent and customers pulled out of orders in the past week.

“To have a third of your business destroyed overnight is unprecedented,” said founder and CEO Nigel Malcolm… The Perth-based company is looking at making up to 20 staff redundant, but Mr Malcolm said it would work with teams over the next couple of days to see if it can minimise the impact…

NLC, the nation’s third largest salary packaging company, let go of 74 of its 145 staff on Thursday saying that business had stopped dead…

The government has defended its estimates. A spokesman for Mr Bowen said that the 320,000 figure came from ATO and Treasury advice and captured the number of people salary packaging a car. Another 160,000 were driving cars provided by their employers, usually as part of a fleet.

That brought the total figure to 480,000, closer to industry estimates. The government is assuming the only impact to those with fleet cars is the need to use a log book.

The news that the city of Detroit is declaring bankruptcy may not surprise many observers who were aware of how economic decline, shrinking population, the burden of huge public employee contracts and political corruption was leading inevitably to this outcome. But it might come as something of a shock to the vast majority of Americans whose only thoughts about the subject prior to today were framed by the demagoguery on the issue that came from President Obama’s reelection campaign. As we all recall, Democrats spent a good deal of 2012 telling us that “General Motors is alive and Osama bin Laden is dead” and hounding Mitt Romney for saying that Detroit would be better off going bankrupt rather than being bailed out by the federal government. But yesterday we learned that all the sunny talk about what Obama had accomplished did nothing to save the city.

Of course, Democrats will say that when they were talking about “Detroit” last year, they were just using the word as shorthand for the automobile industry and not referring to the Motor City itself. But the memory of the way the president pounded Romney on the issue should do more than point out Obama’s hypocrisy. The collapse of what was once one of America’s great cities should also inform us about the way the liberal project is dooming municipal and state governments around the country as well as Washington to a sea of debt that cannot be sustained. Detroit isn’t just the most spectacular example of urban blight. It’s the poster child for the consequences of liberal governance.

This week we got a wake up call that tells us that Obama didn’t save Detroit from bankruptcy. He is merely one more in a string of liberal enablers that helped create the situation there that may well be replicated elsewhere eventually, even in cities that are not in as dire straits today as Detroit is. It’s time for America to sober up and realize that without government reform based on the end of liberal illusions, Detroit will become a metaphor for how America became like Greece: bankrupt, corrupt, and a shadow of its past faded glories.

Flinders St station is just the next part of 'fixing'Melbourne.

Most of my life Melbourne was ugly and boring, then they finally allowed outdoor eating, and started to sort out southbank, that seemed to give planners a shot in the arm.
So much has been redeveloped, Fed square,Docklands, sporting bit - of course the Commonwealth Games injected heaps into zapping stuff up.

Sure is a much more attractive city now.

There is a national emergency on our borders.

Today, Scott Morrison and I announced that a Coalition government will establish a military-led response to combat people smuggling and to protect our borders – Operation Sovereign Borders.

If elected, a Coalition government will initiate Operation Sovereign Borders which will be led by a senior military commander of 3 star ranking.

In the first 100 days of a Coalition government, Operation Sovereign Borders will undertake key initiatives including:

Establishing the Operation Sovereign Borders HQ and creating a joint agency taskforce;
Finalising and issuing protocols for Operation Relex II, to turn back boats where it is safe to do so;
Increasing capacity at offshore processing centres; and
Lease and deploy additional vessels to relieve patrol vessels of passenger transfers.


Under Labor, there are more than 12 separate government agencies that have involvement in, or responsibility for, the security of our borders, yet the boats still keep coming and too much is falling between the cracks. A Coalition government will streamline decision making into a single command structure with participation from all related agencies.

Operation Sovereign Borders is another part of the Coalition’s policy for stronger borders which will deliver the safe, secure Australia that all Australians expect.

Our policy for stronger borders will:

Re-establish rigorous offshore processing for illegal arrivals;
Give orders to the Navy to turn back boats where safe to do so;
Re-introduce Temporary Protection Visas (TPVs) for asylum seekers found to be genuine refugees, and return them home when it is safe;
Deny those asylum seekers who deliberately discard identification documentation the benefit of the doubt when determining their refugee status;
Work with our neighbours to stop people smugglers and deter their customers from coming into the region; and
Guarantee places for offshore humanitarian visa applicants by denying permanent visas to illegal boat arrivals.

Obviously what has to be added to this is the following sort of thing:

1) if you come by boat and without genuine ID info, you will NEVER be settled in Oz and nor will you be entitled to any kind of "family reunion" other than being returned to the country you were allegedly fleeing for your life from.

2) if you riot or rape or cause any kind of harm to another while waiting for your claim to be processed, you will NEVER be settled in Oz.

3) if you are ever settled in Oz but choose to leave the country and visit the country you were allegedly fleeing for your life from, you will not be permitted to return to Oz.

4) if you are ever settled in Oz, it shall be under a TPV only and should you ever be found guilty of a crime worthy of even a suspended jail sentence, then the TPV should be immediately revoked, the criminal be deported and forever barred from settlement in Oz.

5) if the country you were allegedly fleeing for your life from was not actually likely to have been persecuting you, you will be returned to it.

6) if you passed through more than one country to illegally attempt to enter Oz, then you shall NEVER be settled in Oz.

7) if you are an able bodied man (such as the kind photos of where provided of in these forums the other day) allegedly fleeing for your life from a country where Oz military service folk are already putting their own lives on the line to help defend and bring order to, you will be returned to that country in order to do what you should be doing to help improve and defend that country rather than running away and attempting to sponge off the hard work and good will of another nation like the selfish cowards you have revealed yourselves to be.

6) if you have cowardly sent your women and children on perilous journey by sea that has a high likelihood of them being being drowned or raped, with the presumption that you would then be allowed to reunite with them in Oz at a later date, then they shall NEVER be settled in Oz and the only choice regarding reunion is for them to be returned to the country where you are, providing it is not Oz.

7) if you attempt to enter Oz by any other means other than via our official refugee intake or normal immigration process or 457 visa or holiday visa, then you shall NEVER be settled in Oz.

Under the UN Refugee Convention Asylum Seekers are not illegal:

The UN Refugee Convention (to which Australia is a signatory) recognises that refugees have a right to enter a country for the purposes of seeking asylum, regardless of how they arrive or whether they hold valid travel or identity documents.

The Convention stipulates that what would usually be considered as illegal actions (e.g. entering a country without a visa) should not be treated as illegal if a person is seeking asylum. This means that it is incorrect to refer to asylum seekers who arrive without authorisation as “illegal”, as they in fact have a right to enter Australia to seek asylum.

Anyhoo, I wonder where the latest batch will end up being housed. We've already had a bunch put unannounced next to female boarding room accommodation at a university, with the inevitable happening re: a student being raped.

I know, perhaps 30 to 40 % of the units in a certain new apartment building that a certain BBB member is eagerly awaiting completion of should be allocated for housing the poor downtrodden fleeing-for-their-lives malnourished wasting away feeble men pictured above and the rest of the residents encouraged to bring them soup, give 'em neck rubs, and help them get back on their feet again so that they can return home to help make their homelands a better place, hmmm ?
