Deaths of Minor Celebrities

There's an unspoken rule that whenever possible you DON'T mention suicide in the media and as part of the ethics they put the contact information under any story that is about suicide, whether its mentioned or not. It'll be 'not suspicious' or 'natural causes' or something similar to those phrases - and then the lifeline/SANE etc information at the bottom of the article/end of news story.

Like this story today they are saying they 'fell' off the bridge - even though they will call it a murder-suicide they are hesitant to say 'jumped' for similar reasons. When that guy from All Saints died, he fell off a building - he didn't jump and commit suicide, in any news report.

Yeah. As soon as you see Lifeline's details, you know it's suicide, even if they don't actually say it was. I remember someone asking me "How does a 17yo (or whatever the current story was about) just die! From natural causes? 17yo's don't generally just die!!" and me having to explain what aylaah just said to them.

I was aware of the embargo on reporting suicides as it tends to lead to other 'copycat' suicides. Especially for teenagers.

I saw the father / son one last night - 'fell to their death' :(

The lifeline details were in the news.com.au article perhaps they were jumping to conclusion?

^ Yes that is the story I read.

Honestly, sounds to me like he died drunk somewhere and was found like that. Not good anyway.

Davy Jones. Aged 66 RiP. He was my first little girl crush, when I was about 10 and he was on tv. (and being on the Brady bunch helped too)

Would we call him a minor celeb? He was pretty big in his day.

Davy Jones of the The Monkees, who sang lead on many of the band's hits including "Daydream Believer," died in his sleep of a heart attack Wednesday morning in Florida, his rep Deborah Robicheau has confirmed.

According to TMZ, the Martin County medical examiner's office received a call from Martin Memorial Hospital informing them that Jones had died. He was 66.

Jones was the youngest member of the hit-making Monkees, a pre-fabricated rock quartet formed in 1966 to star in a television show of the same name. His good looks and British charm paired well with the American members of the group, drummer-singer Micky Dolenz, guitarist Michael Nesmith and bassist Peter Tork.

Born in Manchester, England, Jones began his career as a teen actor and appeared as the Artful Dodger in a West End production of "Oliver!" -- later moving to the Broadway production where he earned a Tony nomination. After gaining fame with The Monkees, Jones made a string of TV appearances, mostly as himself, in hit shows including "The Brady Bunch," "Love, American Style" and "My Two Dads." He also returned to the stage in "Oliver!" but as Fagin.

With The Monkees, which released nine albums between 1966 and 1970, Jones sang lead on hits including "Daydream Believer," "I Wanna Be Free," "Shades of Gray" and "Valleri." The TV series about four aspiring musicians sharing a beach house ran for two seasons -- between 1966-68 -- totalling 58 episodes. The sitcom won two Emmys and because of syndication and the power of Nick at Nite, the band's zany adventures live on for younger generations.

The band shed their bubblegum sound by the time of 1968's "Head," a psychedelic-themed film and album. Co-written and produced by actor Jack Nicholson, the cult classic was the band's lone feature film.

Various incarnations of the band have continued recording and touring throughout the years. Jones' bandmates have not commented on the news of Jones' death.

Jones is survived by his wife Jessica and four daughters.

Sad to read, but glad he is survived by 4 daughters. I was a fan of the Monkees and Davvy Jones - yes, a believer.

Interesting song - there is a passage or two in Emerson's essay on love which it reminds me of:

All mankind love a lover. The earliest demonstrations of complacency and kindness are nature's most winning pictures. It is the dawn of civility and grace in the coarse and rustic. The rude village boy teases the girls about the school-house door;--but to-day he comes running into the entry, and meets one fair child disposing her satchel; he holds her books to help her, and instantly it seems to him as if she removed herself from him infinitely, and was a sacred precinct. Among the throng of girls he runs rudely enough, but one alone distances him; and these two little neighbours, that were so close just now, have learned to respect each other's personality.

RIP Davey - obviously every girl's favourite Monkee!

He was just on an episode of Brady Bunch last week and Moonbaby was asking about him. I played her some of the Monkee's songs that I often play and she recognized the songs.

I suppose we're going to be seeing a lot more of the 60's & 70's celebrities dropping off now. Pretty sad really. I will be a mess once Alice goes - he's 66 now.

I loved Davy. Very fond memories of growing up with the Monkees.

I'm A Believer too.

Sorry, I'm a bit distracted...am watching Dirty Dancing (yet again!) it's getting to the 'good part'!

(a typical "monkees" type end to the clip)

Didn't his mum make it big with liquid paper ?

Explains his film clip and his method of flight. ;)
