Maybe we were just used to it in 2012 but my goodness I do not remember those promos being that cringe at the time
I’ve found a new appreciation for the current 10 ones
While we’re on that topic, I went back and watched the opening intro of the Launch in 2012, 2013, and 2014. If you wanna see cringe, look no further. I completely forgot Sonia entered the stage each season on Nine with a full choreographed dance routine.
The 2013 one in particular literally made me laugh aloud. Shocking.

This screams “The twist is this >insert food type< is actually fat and sugar free” or “The twist is this >insert service< is cheaper and more reliable” type of ad. Not Big Brother.

lol it certainly isn’t. It would get more ratings (and more controversy - big brother fuel) if it was on later with an M rating.

I'm a Sonia fan (bite me), but I do admit that the dance routines in the openings were cringe asf.
Oh god, I forgot about that.
All I keep thinking (and laughing at) is imagine this but with Davina, Julie or Gretel.
These openings had to have been a new low in BB lore!
And let's not forget about Sonia's magic powers...

In fairness, "Surly" was a direct rip-off of the "Tree of Temptation" in BBUK, where it worked really well (and was certainly not aimed at children).
The main problem is, it needs a smart, sharp producer to voice it, not just someone making dumb fish puns and struggling to do a British accent.
It also relied on actual secrecy on BBUK, whereas you could tell they were locking people in the BBAU bathroom for Surly to talk to, with no danger of anyone walking in or catching them "talking to themselves".

That was Alex Mavroidakis, the ÈP at the time, who does have a British accent.

I'm imagining that Sonia probably had a clause added to her contract to accommodate one dance number per season. That performative variety show style of live TV needs to stay dead and buried (and I'm including Friday Night Games in that bucket). I hope the live shows for this new series are much tighter with less recap.

Ohh is it strange that promo feels weirdly nostalgic to me? The underscore is almost exactly what Ten used in all the 2001 promos to promote the Daily Show/Eviction episodes, particularly the bit at the very end.
