Big Brother 2013

I think BBAU 2013 audition information will be coming out this Monday for all those who want to try out.

Sonia's tweet: "I keep missing Big Brothers' calls. Note to self - call him back before Monday. He might have news."

Reggie has said a few things about an all-stars BB on her twitter. More just wishful thinking on her part though as opposed to it having any substance I think.

Yes.. seems to be a bit of a flurry going on over at the BB social media pages at the moment..
with the main website getting refreshed over the weekend and
now from Sonia's part.. she will be making a BIG announcement tomorrow morning on K&J'o morning radio.
With a few tweets from both Sonia and the BB accounts with vivid descriptions of upcoming news.

I for one am getting all very excited already.. Hope to hear it's the audition/application details
:D I need to start planning to put in for the day off

I really hope Sonia's comments about housemate diversity is true. We need to see a mix of different ages, life experience, jobs, backgrounds, ethnicity, and religious beliefs. Honestly I am sick of the same old. I am strongly against stunt casting however it surely is not that hard in this day and age to find a mix of the above.

We need 3 or 4 40+ year olds including 1 or 2 in their 50's and 60's.
An Asian, African, Indian, anything that we barely have in the Big Brother house but are big parts of modern day Australia.
Muslim, Christian, doesn't bother me, just as long as their is one hardcore housemate with strong religious beliefs.
We also need an alternative housemate. Somebody who your average person would never deal with on a day to day basis.
I am fine with 1 or 2 good looking people but if there are more then 7 good looking people younger then 29 I will be quite angry.

I'm not sure if this can be considered stunt casting but it would be interesting to see them cast people that were polar opposites... Kind of like they did in BB5 in the UK only without the freak show aspect...

I agree with you that the cast needs diversity even if it's not necessarily the norm in everyday Australia... A diverse cast could certainly provide a lot more in terms of story... Although I'm not really sure what good a racial diversity will do without a decent range in age... I'd almost like to see at least a third of the cast older than 30 -35, but I'm not sure they need to go as high as 60...

I agree with the polar opposites thing. I think for far to long in Australian Big Brother the housemates have all been very similar. Makes for boring TV IMO.

I don't see how you "need" people in their 50s and 60s especially. Generally speaking they're out of place when cast in a BB series and just fall into an uninteresting parenting role as usually it is just one or two of them then everyone else in their 20s and 30s.

It's not so much the age that matters - it's the type of person they cast. They can put in a 25 year old who goes in with much more life experience than someone 20 years their senior and offers so much more to the show. It's more about getting a range of backgrounds into the house than a range of ages, though I do think the cast should range from about 21 to late 30s/early 40s.

While I agree with your sentiment, there are not going to be too many 25 year old with as much life experience as someone 20 years their senior. Yes there are some older people who have done nothing much with their life for 20 years but they are still going to have 20 years more of "experiences". By the time I was 29 years old I'd travelled the world multiple times, studied, married and had a baby. I thought my life experiences were extensive I had a lot to learn.

Having said that as you say, because there only usually 1 or 2 older people cast it just doesn't work.

Yes but that is why I would like them to cast 5-6 people say 45+ and then they would not be the minority. The only reason I said I would like to see 50 and 60 year olds in the house is because as I stated in my original post, I am sick of the same old and I would prefer to see something much different to the norm. I am not expecting such a dramatic change however I just hope there is at the very least 2-3 40+ year olds. I would also definitely like to see a mix of cultures, ethnicity and religious beliefs.

Sadly, given that the show's timeslot sets it up against Home&Away and Neighbours, it's only going to be cast in such a way that it competes for viewers of those shows.

As Peter Abbott mentioned in an interview conducted by BBBA years ago, casting needs to compete with those shows.

Unless it gets a different timeslot, I can't see it changing too radically, but we live in hope.

All political, religious etc... conversations were edited out of the last series, so we missed any real diversity they could offer.

The biggest conflict of morals I can remember was Angie vs. Michael about diamond engagement rings... and it was all over Angie's head anyway.

I'd love to see a house with passionate crusaders, religious zealots, the barbie, the survivalist, the right wing pol sci student, big opinions, really flawed individuals, diversity... it'd be amazing.

But I imagine the above (less the barbie) would need to be recruited, rather than auditioned... I also imagine it'd be all too controversial for the channel and time slot.

Last season was a G rated look at the sorority/fraternity.

Home and Away isnt worth watching without Ms Fletcher like Big Brother isnt without a good cast

I reckon you should be on the show. Something tells me you're as old as dirt and very wise.

I can see that... It would be interesting if a network like TEN was to build a copy-cat show aimed at a slightly more mature demographic... Much like the American ABC's Glass House is "similar" to BB...

One could argue that the American BB and Survivor are extremely similar... There are overlaps in demographics however, BB does seem to find a younger audience while Survivor is more for adults...

Canadian networks have had a lot of success moving their imported reality shows in to their specialty cable networks... So perhaps there is room in Australia as well... Essentially 500,000 on a digital channel is the same as a million plus on the regular network... I think 500,000 on a digital network at 8pm is probably closer to a 2 million equivalent...
