"
how reliable was this story?

And why were there no pictures of the bodies?

Had good taste for once prevailed?

Well no. You see no babies had been found.

Nor indeed had the septic tank.

Oh yes, and did we forget to tell you that those 796 children died of natural causes?

With Measles, Influenza, pneumonia, TB and whooping cough topping the list."

...

So why did the media fall for it?

As Dublin City University’s professor of journalism Steven Knowlton put it in Crikey :

For several years now, Ireland has been rocked by scandal after scandal involving the abuse of children — the mass grave-in-a-septic-tank fits the narrative.

— Crikey, 13th June, 2014

In other words it matched our prejudices.

And it made such great headlines, it was really too good to check.

And who cared if it suggested those nuns were mass murderers?"

From here: http://www.algemeiner.com/2014/06/18/for-the-first-time-pa-arrests-bds-activists-in-ramallah/

"In an unprecedented first, the Palestinian Authority recently arrested four anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) activists in Ramallah

...

Journalist Khaled Abu Toameh, writing for Gatestone, said that the BDS movement is seen by the PA as trouble-makers and law-breakers. For some PA officials, BDS is a movement that acts against the true interests of the Palestinians. They say that the actions of those promoting BDS make the Palestinians appear as if they are not interested in peace and coexistence with Israel.

...

Palestinians are well aware of the extent of the damage that BDS can cause them financially if the boycotters’ ambitions are fully realized. There are 14 Israeli industrial and agricultural parks in Judea and Samaria, including 788 factories and businesses, employing some 11,000 Palestinian workers, alongside 6,000 Israeli workers.

Furthermore, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, workers in industrial zones in Judea and Samaria are paid twice to three times the average Palestinian salary and also receive full social benefits as prescribed by Israeli law. In addition, Palestinian businessmen prefer the Israeli economy’s stability and comparative freedom over the corrupt PA’s economy.

Thus, according to research conducted at Al Quds University, the Palestinian volume of investments in the Israeli economy is two times higher than in the Palestinian economy. Approximately 16,000 Palestinian businessmen with entry visas into Israel choose to invest their money there. Therefore, the struggle to boycott Israel further gravely undermines the Palestinian economy, which is dependent on its neighbor. Israelis can transfer their factories elsewhere, but Palestinians will remain with nothing."

Umm WTF.... I had no idea that Abortion is in fact illegal in NSW. How the hell did I not know this.

http://www.vice.com/read/its-2014-and-abortion-is-illegal-in-new-south-wales

Heidi found that in her situation the two main implications of abortion being illegal were a lack of information on how to access services and a reluctance of people willing to speak about the issue. On ringing a Family Planning Clinic she was told that they could not refer her to a GP who could prescribe her RU486, the abortion pill, nor could they recommend an abortion clinic.

A friend of mine from high school took the Abortion pill and didn't need to be prescribed it from a doctor, she just went to the chemist and had to prove she was 16. Obviously this seems really strange to me, I've never taken the abortion pill or had an abortion, but I thought if I needed to one day the option was there and it was legal.

While that story is all kinds of fucked up, I believe it is legal provided it is sub 16 weeks and there is a therapeutic benefit for the woman's physical or emotional/mental wellbeing which can include not being financially prepared or emotionally capable to carry the child to term. This is why there are legal clinics and the doctors who administer them are not penalised. It's pretty difficult to prove that a termination was conducted under any other circumstances, and realistically a large majority would be anyway. You don't need a referral for the procedure - or at least I don't think so - but any non-jerk doctor will help a girl out, and most will prescribe RU-486 provided certain basic criteria are met.

I really question that family planning centre, it sounds like they have more religious roots, there are plenty of organisations that would've provided better support - how awful for that woman to be put in that situation

What is 100% legal is anything not performed by a doctor, so all the old school backyard butcher abortions and anything a woman does to herself to induce miscarriage - if proven she can go to jail.

So there are legal restrictions in place that do technically make it illegal, but they are there to protect the expectant mothers and ensure a safe option is always available. The laws do need some revision, and I'm not sure about states outside of NSW, but compared to places like the US it's pretty good for women's autonomy.

As a mother, I feel for those asylum seekers mothers who feel they need to commit suicide to give their children a chance. Surely a basic need such as fresh water could be given to the families on Christmas Island. These are basic standards. Seriously, where is the humanity and compassion especially for a person who is the face of Australia?

In the article Abbott says: ''This is not going to be a government which has our policy driven by people who are attempting to hold us over a moral barrel – we won't be driven by that.''

Yep, that sounds about right. This government has no morality.

I just can't understand how he views this as emotional blackmail. It's DESPERATION not blackmail. These families feel helpless and are resorting to self harm for the fear of their children not receiving the medical treatment they need. Of course the children are getting sick when they are drinking dirty water. I just don't understand how they pay for people to be in the room with them so that they don't harm themselves, but can't afford to actually give them clean water? Where is the logic in that? Surely there is a better system in place for asylum seekers. And I don't want to hear well they didn't haveto get on the boat. When faced with the option of death, slavery, rape, trafficking, these families feel no other choice is left for them. The world frustrates me sometimes. I need a happy story

Our current government has no compassion, no moral compass and no idea. They are capable of just about anything, it seems, and show no humanity at all. Vile people.

The helpless refugees who risk their lives to come here because they have no option should be welcomed and shown warmth, compassion and support in starting new and safe lives, not be treated like criminals and made even more desperate.

I don't want to be associated with what is being done by our elected government, but I'm afraid that the world will come to view Australians as heartless, racist, bullies who show scant regard for international law and basic human rights.

I, of course, mean that it should be stored hygienically and given to homeless shelters! Not that people in homeless shelters shouldn't care about the rats! Omg! I sounded awful!

In truly shocking news Olympian Ian Thorpe confirms he is gay in a Channel 10 interview to air on Sunday night.

That's awesome, I thought he was going to stay closeted forever, I wonder why the change. That's a crazy long time to keep that a secret and would definitely have contributed enormously to his recent issues, but hopefully this is just a public thing his family and friends have long known he lives in the gaybourhood. He probably shouldn't have dated that swimmer Amanda Beard, I mean come on, A Beard?!

This is a really good news story, posted in the music thread already - but all should enjoy this:)

Paula - Robin Thicke
It is an album well on its way to becoming the biggest musical flop of the decade.

With 530 copies sold in the UK, 550 sold in Canada and fewer than 54 sold in Australia, Robin Thicke's latest album Paula has become the laughing stock of the music industry in just one week.
