Whoa..it gets very exciting up in the BB threads doesn't it? :D

Lucky I can retreat to this lovely lounge to hide and /or recuperate :D

Tis a weird and wonderul world up there, I need a breather....

Been sick lately and watching weird daytime tv.

My Strange Addictions is a new favourite, cannot beleive the stuff people eat! And today a woman in a bunny suit - belongs to furries, people who live out their lives in animal suits.

Yeah I saw that last week, in another episode there was a woman addicted to eating those sheets you put in the dryer and another who was addicted to being an adult baby th_smiley_emoticons_fips_eek_noani.gif

In one of the very early seasons of CSI they had a murder and the case revolved around the whole world of plushies and furries..... Was a fun but weird episode..

I find that show fascinating. One woman addicted to eating cushions. Most of the people so far have been women. I thought that was strange. How would you feed eating a whole cushion? Another used to eat whole toilet rolls. She would have one in her handbag and tear off sheets. Eeeewwwww

The things they eat!
Farout, I saw one woman eats stones, another chalk. Saw the cushions one today. And creepy woman with puppets.
And a woman who suck her thumb non stop - eww totally gross germy.

I have a sister who used to eat tissues, she would suck on wads of them. Then she just ate herself fat.

Also the hoarder shows. They kind of creep me out but I watch them sometimes and get sucked in.

Hoarding seems to be a really common illness and it sure is an illness.

I know 2 seriously bad hoarders, one has just given up on life (sister), you can't visit her - junk will fall on you, you can't help her she doesn't want help.
And a good friend, but she functions, has a job and a life but she is bad - we found a car hidden under crap under her house she forgot about.

And I know at least another 3-4 from work etc, it's very common.
Do you hoard? Not me, Ilike chucking stuff out - except clothes, difficult to throw clothes out I find, I didn't get new clothes as a kid so I think my clothes liking is understandable.

One of my neighbours is. He's mentally ill. Like not ill ill but he has been at times. It's so sad, he's nearly 40 and is probably on the spectrum or something anyway if he were leaving school now he'd be given support to get him into the workforce, apparently he does things like sandblasting windows and is really good at it but he was never given a chance to do anything when he left school in '89, he was just automatically given a disability pension.

Pretty much the neighbours just ignore it but when it starts to spill onto the front lawn for too many days and accumulate one neighbour goes and has a word and points out he can't do that.

Yeah back in the day they gave out the DSP but didn't back it up, it encouraged people to become dependent on welfare. These days it's harder to get on the DSP and if you do qualify there is all sorts of help you can get to get into the workforce.

Hoarding is so sad, it's a serious mental illness very hard to overcome makes people's lives a misery.

Eliza, what causes hoarding: is it like Prader–Willis compulsions - caused pretty much entirely by a genetic abnomality, or OCD, where if you get the serotonin levels up the compulsions vanish, or like depression or PTSD in that it can be a reaction to things that have nothing to do with physiology (eg. death of a spouse) or more like addictive compulsions (eg. smoking, gambling) that have an element of choice, a certain amount of personal control, and could be managed effectively with willpower or CBT? Or is it more like Schizophrenia, a mix of everything that might or might not respond to anything?

Honestly I don't know enough about it to say with any degree of certainty what causes it. The first time I came across it was about 20 years ago, we had this old fella admitted to a Psychiatric Geriatric Ward, I went with the Social Worker to his house and far out it was just like on the telly I was shocked to the core. The old fella had a long history of mental illness, bi-polar I think (from memory)

I will ask the Psychologist at work about it, he'd know more than me but I'd hazard a guess and say hoarders could have any of the Mental Illnesses you mentioned.

I have an online friend with a child hoarder. Poor little possum gets so upset at the thought of her collections being sorted through to throw out. She won't even part with old clothes she's grown out of. She's very sensitive.

I read that comedian's book she was a hoarder, corinne something? She identified her hoarding as memory keeping. Her whole life of memories were in possessions and she was frightened if she threw anything out she'd forget past things.

A few people on my FB are total total Pink fans. I don't get the love myself but I do really like her songs I like her voice. Hubs was most impressed with her on 60 Minutes.
