What's for dinner?

Today I made lasagna. All from scratch. Basil, tomato, prosciutto... yum!

On the side, home made garlic bread with herbs.
HAHA That's what I'm making tomorrow night, probably won't be as fancy as yours though.
I saw on Masterchef a contestant making a roux and she put onion into it at the start, have you ever tried that? I really want to try it, but that fucking white sauces is so annoying to make because you constantly have to be stirring it and I'm afraid I'll fuck it up and have to start again.

No never done that before. I cheat with my white sauce a bit and use a whisk most times, its easier than stirring imo. The sauce is easy though. once the dough is formed i just add the milk little by little and the cheeses and season it with salt pepper and nutmeg. Another way I do it when Im plain lazy and have other things to do, I pour the milk in and let it heat up and in a separate bowl i whisk an egg, cornflour, with a little bit of milk. whenthe milk in the saucepan has warmed up i throw the cornflour mixture in and the chesses and it stir for 2 to 3 minutes and there you go. It doesn't have the same hit but still good for a quick take on a sauce.

as you can see my lasagna is not all that fancy lol

LOL
Lasagne weather, just gave my sister a batch since she has broken her wrist.

And @inigo your post reminded me of learning to make white sauces years ago, I was such a nervous cook back then - I just couldn't get past the first stage.
IE the butter/flour bit panicked me, and I kept putting that bit through sieves to get the lumps out, or chucking it in a blender.
So I gave up for a few years.

Now

Once you get the roux thing going, butter/flour, mixing in the milk is actually a breeze.
I always make it when I have five other things going, so I can just come back now and again.

I have discovered - you make the lumpy butter/flour mess, add some of the milk and leave it to warm around the lumpy mess, come back mix it to smooth, and it's easy - the warmed milk makes it easier.
Just keep repeating, until it's the consistency you want.

Or buy one of those things that cost thousands and stir for you.

Haven't tried the onion thing that way- but we do creamy onion in white sauce with corned beef. Add onion poached in the microwave to white sauce.

Vegetable soup; very thick with great chunks of vegies, lots of herbs, chilli and a big dollop of greek yoghurt.

I'm new to it, I'd never tried it before this winter. I've just been using the recipe from the CWA cookbook to start with.

...last night my dear wife made a stew in a slow cooker using beef and 750mls of Guiness to a recipe... oh wow!... it's sooooo delicious!!!👍👍👍👍... it slow cooked for about 7 hours... I made some great cheese and herb dumplings and put them in for the last 15 or so minutes to cook... they went well together... the good thing is... stew always tastes better the next day... that's today!😜;)... lol!... cheers.😄

I wish I knew how to handle an oxtail.
LOL

Whereas, I am pleased I have never even seen an oxtail.
And how strange - we don't eat ox, is it really cow tail, bull tail???

But, I came here to our foodie thread to complain.

I am sick to death of the stupid bullet juicer adds - liars!
Should I complain?

All the crap they are spreading, is it dangerous? Kind of. Really dim people will follow this stupid idea.

IE that juices will make you slim. When in fact the opposite is true. If you keep scoffing lots of juices you will get fatter, and fatter.

Doesn't it depend on what you make the juice from?

Yeah I'd agree with this @kxk, I mean juice diets are dumb as, but if you load the juices up with veggies you wouldn't normally eat then you already improving your diet and it will have a flow on effect to your health. You can't subsist on vegetables alone or even get all the nutrients contained, but making your own fresh juice with green ingredients and similar will also lead to weight loss (err, in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise, as the disclaimer always says).

Doesn't it depend on what you make the juice from?

No, not really - you are better off eating an orange rather than drinking 5; or eat a carrot and a celery stick - you miss the fibre juicing it, and will not be as satisfied as eating it.

And anyway, they lie, lie, lie and call it a nutrient extractor - even claiming this glorified blender has some magical properties and can pull out nutrients you otherwise won't find ( who know where they disappear to if you just eat the thing).

And, just using this thing they claim will make you thin.

Mind you - I have a bullet type machine, and I love it. They are great little blenders, but just a blender that conveniently doesn't take up much space

I have the magic bullet. It's such a great little machine.
I make a smoothie for breakfast, fruit, yoghurt and some other stuff like lecithin and almond meal etc. sometimes kale or spinach.

However I only use it as I can't STAND the thought of eating in the morning. Apparently been that way my whole life. I know it's unhealthy to go without breakfast at all, so I do juice or smoothie.

Made a Caesar salad tonight... All from scratch. I was petrified about the Caesar dressing and attempting to make the mayonnaise base, but I did it! And it tasted quite good. The croutons were so tasty. I have dried out oregano and thyme and that's my special ready made dried herb in the cupboard. I also made a lentil and potato soup with lots of care miles onion. Peasant food right there ha!

Sounds delish! I love salads and I love soups. :)

I love both too. Soups are the best in winter. I'm pretty sure I enjoy holding the bowl more sometimes. I want to try a soup with beetroot. I see these shows on tv and they use it and it has me curious now.
