Tully Making Lesbians Look Bad

Interesting clip with Tim. However, that doesn't give you the right to label someone else's sexuality. Tully chooses to identify as a lesbian, although she admits the label isn't a 100% fit for her, it's still what she identifies as. As Tully and Tim say in their conversation, sexuality isn't just black and white. Tully is just going with the label she thinks best describes herself. Even if that's a lesbian that experiences attraction to men as well. She obviously feels her attraction to women is a lot more predominant and therefore believes homosexual is a closer match than bisexual when she tries to explain her sexuality in simple black and white terms. Bisexuality is commonly believed to be a 50/50 attraction to both men and women (which I know isn't accurate, it's just the widely believed definition) and Tully doesn't believe that describes her sexuality the best.

Labels are meant to empower us, not restrict us. They help to articulate ourselves. Sexuality is a spectrum and Tully is simply trying to use the best label that helps to describe her, but she doesn't perfectly fit into any of the "standard" definitions of any current sexuality labels (a lot of people don't by the way). Tully doesn't choose her sexuality but she does choose how she expresses it, what she identifies as and what she labels it as. If that's a lesbian who also feels some attraction to men then so be it.

As for representing either lesbians or bisexuals. Tully didn't go into the house with an agenda to raise LGB issues or represent them either. She's gone in as her own person without trying to take on that kind of baggage. She's being judged for who she is, not that she's a lesbian. She doesn't really epitomise any stereotypes about either sexuality anyway, so I don't see the big deal.

As for the cuddling up for Drew thing, at the moment it's just for a bit of affection and comfort. There's nothing wrong with friendly spooning. I can imagine i'd want to do the same in the house. I'll be concerned if her thing with Drew goes any further though.

Excellent post. Very insightful. Thanks for sharing as i enjoyed reading your thoughts on the matter.

A moral panic over a lesbian getting too close to a straight guy? oh dear me.

Everyone please return to your allocated boxes.

Has anyone considered that what primarily drives the creature called Tully is simply narcissism ?

That she basically craves to served / worshipped as well as be considered "different" and "special" ?

You know, just like KRudd does. :D

Also, has anyone considered Tully is simply immature and clueless, just like so many others of her age if not upbringing ?

OTOH, maybe Tully merely suffers from ASPERGERS ! ;) :D

regarDS

Tully is a bundle of contradictions. She is selfish and self-absorbed, but she is also a a very caring person. She is bright and yet quite stupid at times. She is a hipster yet she has chosen the most conservative people in the house to be friends with (the meatheads). She is a lesbian who likes boys (one boy at least). She is frustrating and yet fascinating.

She definitely does not have aspergers (she is far too social for that). Quite the opposite.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say she's making lesbians look bad, but I can see where people might get the idea. Though Tully has made it pretty clear that she really doesn't like the idea of labels and is pretty fluid when it comes to dating. So long as she doesn't stray into the realm of cheating (which personally I don't think she has, she just seems affectionate) I really couldn't care less.

she's obsessed with jade. who cares if she's lesbian or a meat eater, her sexual preference shouldn't be an issue in this day and age but her behaviour is not doing her any favours.

She is very reminiscent of whatsherface from last year. Estelle. Kind of a undefined personality, but searching for that something-in-particular she can be.

I wouldn't say that too loud you could get in trouble. :p

the only thing i think she has in common with estelle is the people that support/cheer for her, they kinda seem like the same rabid lot (sorry, meant in the nicest possible way lol). I never understood the estelle obsession last year, but thought she was ok and admired her strength when the rest of the house was against her, she was a nice girl but still you would have thought she was the second coming of Jesus the way some people worshipped her....

A lot of the people who were around last year, seem to be gone?

They're just being lazy! I was actually referring to the fact that when ever someone makes a connection between Tully and Estelle a member of the Stellahood replies whose expression, I imagine, looks something like this. :p

Agreed.

Oh, The Stellahood, the memories.:(

To add to this, If Drew was gay & Tully was straight nobody would care about their friendship, but because it's the other way around it's a big deal.

Does anyone else think this is true?
Yep you're exactly right.
She had her sexuality questioned on here on like the first night, cause she looked at Matt a certain way.
If Heidi were to spoon with Ben, nothing would be thought of it, same with Tahan and Jade (though I'd deliberately think it was more haha).

I don't think her friendship with Drew is a big deal, but she shouldn't be acting this way when she has a partner on the outside and knows the manipulation the show can do.

Good post.

No I believe it was the intro video where she inexplicably told the country she got a thrill from boys noticing her that lead everyone to start questioning her.

ahh Consuela you so funny :)

What a stupid comment, there are annoying emotional bitchy lesbians and there are kind bubbly confident ones as well and a host of other diverse personalities, if you or anyone else is judging or labeling all lesbians from one fickle little Sydney socialite in the house then maybe look at your own homophobia. She can label herself lesbian, bi or straight she has every right to, just because she hugs Matt and flirts with Drew doesn't mean she's 'obviously' bi.
Also I don't think anyone is put into the house to wave the flag for any sort of minority, they're just diverse individuals chosen to play a game. I don't have any bets on Tahan for changing Indigenous stereotypes either.
'..there are annoying emotional bitchy lesbians and there are kind bubbly confident ones..

Sure there are.

It's not her sexuality, it's her personality. Horrid.

Tully, like the rest of them, is merely an attention whore. Whoring for attention completely overrides whatever their sexuality is, so if she thinks she will get more camera time fawning over Drew then that is what the girl will do. End.
