...the many things that you remember as a kid or teenager...

…while rummaging through my computer files in a non descript file that I usually bypass I found these lol!…

…haha!… (I’m the second one)…here we are showing off our brand new ‘Beatles haircuts’ lol!… there’s a funny little story associated with the origins of these haircuts…

…back in the early 60’s when ‘Beatlemania’ and ‘The Rolling Stones‘ first arrived on the ‘Rock n’ Roll’ scene along with other great bands… they had a feverish effect on us 10 - 15 year olds in the East End London slum areas (which were quite harsh at the time)… the kids in our block of flats (or as we called it… our ‘buildings square’)… all of us kids suddenly wanted to become ‘rockstars’… well…

…a boy who had three brothers that used to play in a ‘Skiffle Band’ which is like…

…because he had brothers in ‘the music industry’… this kid named ‘Billy’ proudly announced that he was going to start his own rock and roll band at that he was going to hold ‘auditions’ in two weekends time ‘if you want to be in the band’… (we had to wait 2 weekends because his brothers finally caved into him to lend him some of their old musical instruments like guitars and drums etc when they weren’t working lol!)… (mind you… Billy was the ripe old age of 13 lol!)…my little brothers and my eyes lit up at the ‘opportunity’ and we were going to jump at the offer!…

…knowing that we had two weeks up our sleeve I had this brainwave… no… a masterstroke!… that if we got ‘Beatles’ haircuts that we’d already have our feet halfway in the door and would be in the ‘band’ for sure!… we then started an ongoing campaign of relentlessly asking mum to take us to the barbers to get a new ‘Beatles’ haircut…(mind you… we had NEVER volunteered to get a haircut before… in fact… mum had to drag us kicking and screaming up to now lol!)…

…anyway… we finally got our beloved ‘Beatle’ haircuts and thought for sure that we would be in the band… when the day arrived at last here we were standing in a line of about 20 or so boys… (we were the only ones with Beatles haircuts)… I thought “suckers!… we are the ONLY ones with these haircuts!… we’re in for sure!”… well our time eventually turned up for the ‘audition’…

…I let my little brother go first…. we both wanted to be drummers for some reason… anyway my brother had a go first… he was terrible!… no rhythm at all… he came out of the garage crying because he was useless… so here I am… thinking “less competion”… so I boldly strutted in with my new ‘Beatles‘ haicut and was ready to start my ’music career’… well… it turned out that I had even less rhythm than my littlle brother!…lol!… (and… it wasn’t the ‘look’ that they were going for… they wanted to be a ‘dirty’ band like The Rolling Stones… not a’prissy’ group like the Beatles!… lol!)…

…I do remember saying something like “I didn’t wanna be in your fucking stupid shit band anyway!”… as I walked off to sulk somewhere lol!… anyway both my brother and I were both shattered but kept our beloved Beatles haircut (which the girls liked… but neither of us were chasing them at the time lol!)… needless to say… the ‘band’ never eventuated because nobody had any talent whatsoever… especially Billy!… but!… my brother and I still had great haircuts lol!… true story… cheers

Cordial Machine.JPG

I was walking through the shopping centre the other day which hasn't changed much in all the years until now and I remembered when I was a kid where there used to be a cordial vending machine...lol. I found a picture of one online it was probably very similar to this one pictured sitting out the front of the shop back in the early to mid 80's I think. You can see it has 2 tubes for 2 different flavours and from memory it was usually the red rasberry cordial on one side and the green lime cordial on the other side of the machine. I think it was something like 10 cents back then for a nice cool refreshing cup of cordial when we were younger...lol. Cheers!

…I remember my dad taking me fishing in England when I was quite young… I remember him teaching me over and over and over again tying fishing knots… lol!… I was still having trouble tying up my shoelaces let alone fishing knots… needless to say… he did most of the knots for me… he wanted to spend his time actually fishing… not spend all day teaching me to tie those damn knots lol!… bless his heart… cheers.

Great memories mate, I used to also go fishing with my dad when I was quite young. I also remember how free the laws were back then around here around the bay. You could pretty much fish anywhere you wanted and you didn't need a fishing license or anything when fishing in the saltwater around Melbourne. Back in the 80's and possibly the early 90's you could literally drive your car out onto station pier and cast your fishing rod and line out the window of the car and sit back and wait for the fish to bite! Yep if you weren't careful you could roll off the pier and end up in the water! Oh those were the days! :)

…when fishing licences didn’t exist… those WERE the days alright lol!… fishing from a car window… what a great memory… as you said Converse… oh those were the days lol!… cheers.

…my god!… lol!… number 96… wasn’t that show so provocative at the time?… I actually met Abigail the so-called ‘sex bomb’ of the time… I was working in a warehouse at the time in a massive shopping centre and TV stars used to turn up at the warehouse to enter the ‘backstage’ area that was the most secluded entry to the centre stage to ‘perform’ on…

…whenever they turned up it was up to one of us to escort them via a lift down 4 stories to the stage… anyway it happened that I had to escort Abigail and her minders down to the stage this time… at this time you usually make ‘small talk’ to break the ice… well… I tried to talk to her and she just glared at me as if I was a piece of dogshit and looked the other way… talk about being totally up herself… she stank of body odour big time (apparently she bathed in milk like Cleopatra or so the rumour was)…

…she was such a diva… I don’t know why… up close she wasn’t that hot… she had makeup plastered on so much!… it actually did her a misjustice in my opinion… I was so disappointed… here I was getting ready to brag to my mates that I had met the ‘sex bombshell ABIGAIL from Number 96’ and never even bothered because of her actions… it wasn’t worth it… oh well… they say that you should never meet your heroes because it only leads to disappointment … this is a classic case of that lol!… cheers.

Do people have garden sheds anymore?

I remember as a kid at my grandparent's places, they had sheds that were full of all sorts of tools and materials for maintenance, repair and building. Not just a place for a mower and rakes. An actual workshop and supply centre.

Maybe it's just where I am in life, but it doesn't seem people have these anymore.

…my dad loved his backyard shed… it wasn’t big but he fitted so much stuff into it that it was like Dr Who’s Tardis… he made everything fit in it somehow lol!… he never threw any scraps of wood off cuts away… they might be in there for 10 years but eventually they would be used… I used to say to him “dad why don’t you throw those scraps away?… you can always buy some more wood”…he used to reply with something like “why buy it if you already have it?”… you can’t fault his logic I suppose?…

…then as I got older I became just like him and then eventually everyone began asking ME as to why I never threw scraps of wood away so I suppose the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree lol!… but until I had my last stroke and we had to downsize and move into a smaller place to accommodate my wheelchair… I had that shed for over 40years… it’s amazing what you can accumulate in that time lol!… gee I miss that shed sometimes lol!… cheers.

…this morning my friend and I were talking about lollies and stuff that we loved as kids… he mentioned Sherbet Dips that you used to have to dip a spoon or something into it in order to eat the Sherbet… aw man!… could I eat one of them right now!… it’s been about 40 years since I’ve had Sherbet… can you still even get them?… we’re going shopping in Woolies tomorrow… I’ll have to look lol!… cheers.

Wizz Fizz!

From the google, they still make and sell them.

Lollies is a category I now know nothing about. I just ignore them in the shops. As a kid it was exciting to go shopping for them. A lollishop, or one of those milkbars with a good assortment of them.

Strangely enough in the last year I've wondered into a couple of lollishops, seeing if anything would appeal and nothing ever did.

I wonder if they still make bubble gum that comes in tape form? Remember that gross liquid candy?

…up_late_all_night… I bought some ‘Wizz Fizz‘ yesterday at Woolworths… my god!… the Sherbet was soooooooo nice!… it even had the miniature red spoon to eat it with lol!… talk about a trip down memory lane or what?… cheers.

…I’ve always loved drawing and painting since about 9 or 10 from memory… my dad used to be a professional photographer amongst other jobs…one day when I was walking through the house at that young age I noticed my dad doing a drawing of a girls face… I was amazed!… (apparently… when he was in the British Army in WWII he used paint murals on the side of Tanks and Planes like Bombers etc…

…I asked him to show me how he did the drawing so he taught me how to do it… so as I drew it as he was teaching me he was totally shocked on how well I picked it up… and… in his words… “how good it was”… he soon realised that i had a natural talent for drawing… he told me to keep repeating the drawing of the girls face over and over again until my drawing was as good as his… a few weeks later I presented my drawing to him… he thought that it was one of his drawings… lol!… from then on he kept on encouraging me more often to keep me interested in honing my drawing skills god bless him…

…if you’re interested… I’ve put some of my artwork onto the’Deviant Art’ website…

…it’s only about 25% of the stuff that I’ve ever done but these are the only ones that I have copies of… I guess that I should’ve started keeping copies of my works a lot sooner eh?… oh well… it is what it is… I hope that you enjoy them… cheers.

I still remember when they finally switched off all the good old analogue broadcast tv stations back in 2013. It was also only channel 7 here in Melbourne that actually broadcast something special for the final moments on the old analogue broadcast signal before it was switched off forever. Cheers!

I was thinking this just today when opening another sealed can these days they all have those convenient ring pulls on the top where they open up easily and there's no need to use the old can opener anymore. Remember back years ago nearly all cans had to be opened with a good old can opener. I can't remember the last time I used the old can opener. Must have been many years ago now...lol

Do you remember SPARROWS, ugly little brown birds, introduced
(why?, to make more homely for poms, wtf)

So, in Vic, and elsewhere apparently , the little fuckers have disappeared

I hate them because, as a adolescent they fucked up my sleep.
At that strange time we were the only house in the street with trees, and we had a Forrest
Parents were country peeps and very early greenies
So outside my window hundreds of shitty sparrows would wake me up at.....
“Sparrows fart”..... literally, around 4-5am

You get more sensitive to your surrounding in puberty, they drove me crazy

And now, GONE, thank you, dreary things compared with fab Aussie birds
This only occurred to me watching fantastic birds around me, next door to a golf course, we have
Lots of lovely native birds
