The Block - Sky High

It's made out of pallets, I was looking at stuff you can make from what's available for free/recycling etc.

My Dad used to make us stuff out of all kinds of things, he was ahead of his time out of necessity, TV's became bookcases and sidetables; their bedhead was something from a demolished Edwardian house; he got the church's old confessional doors for room dividers.
I have a great little table he made from scraps of this and that, cute shabby chic. So he made us all 'pickers', he was like those women who had a series turning old stuff into goodies.
That would be my dream job fossicking for hidden treasures.

Hmm I noticed at a Tile place the other day there was a "free pallets" sign out. I might grab one.

Some awesome ideas allover the net, shelves, frames, panelling, beds, chairs.

I want to build a bed. I hate most bed designs - the ones that cost a fortune, like French provincial and stuff are good, but I still have never seen a perfect bed.
I might add I have no real build it/carpentry skills - I want to become more handy, can't be that hard.

Yeah I want to be more handy, I was thinking of doing a WEA course, they have one Home Maintenance and one on interior design.

You have Bunnings in SA?
They run handy stuff free classes here, think I might give that a go - I must have some Dad handy genes.
I didn't get the sewing genes from Mum, hate sewing machines - well I actively avoided that stuff, would much rather bang stuff

Yeah they have Bunnings, good idea re their courses. I can't sew either, I've attempted to make skating costumes and they were a big fail. However I have tiled, did a fireplace hearth years ago, I enjoyed it and it turned out really well.

Don't you find it kind of weird none of the homey shows, Block/HR/Living R/HouseG, have any Bunnings affiliations?

And are you watching HR? It finally beat Block ratings last night - and is destined to conquer Block I reckon.

It's such fun seeing how other Aussies live, and the whole house thing has me hooked. And there no annoying 9 voices or soapy bullshit.
Also like that they all end up winning with house redo.

Have never been a fan of Block it irritates me, but I have watched most of Allstars and this one. It's a very strange show.

I think Bunnings is so dominant they don't feel the need? Or - more to the point - Mitre10 and Masters have more reason to push their brands as the underdogs in the market. I felt a bit sorry for House Rules contestants in Sydney having to drive from the northern beaches all the way to Chullora just to accommodate some product placement in a Masters store. But I suppose that's reality tv for you.

Yeah, I thought about that dominance - and they rarely advertise at all apart from cheap catalogues, interesting.

But plenty of other dominant retailers advertise/hook up with shows etc (Coles for eg).
I actually think that maybe Bunnings think these shows could damage their brand, and are not prepared to bullshit as much as these shows do.
Don't think they would be interested in the Block at all, HR is more the style - Mum & Dad renovators, struggling, and not selling million dollar properties.
More Aussies probably live in dumps like HR, considering the price of property

Ok, so you've called Bec "odd", and The Block "strange"..... why? I think Bec is lovely, and the show is just a show, nothing strange about it?!

I loved all the kitchens last week! What a hard decision to make for the judges. Felt like it was slightly rigged though, with the team with no money left winning...

Agree about the back-lit display cupboards that Matt and whatserface did. Looked nice but you're not going to use that space like that. You're going to put shit in there and then it won't look pretty at all.

To answer your queries.
I find Bec odd as, I have lost my mother, and there is no way I could be on a TV show during and just after her death.
And the show is strange - well it's promoted as a renovation show, and I have never seen any of them build or renovate really, they bang about and fling some cushions around, go shopping and hire tilers.
So, it's a soap with some background people building - and as I said I have only watched some Allstars and this one, and I find it strange. I was expecting proper reno to be going on without all the bullshit and soapy crap.

I'm loving The Block - Sky High. I watched the first series of the Block years ago, when it was the 4 units at Bondi or was it Manly. Then I missed a few and tuned back in for the one with Dan and Danni and also watched the All Stars. I think in the first series they did heaps of the work themselves and that has petered out over subsequent series.

Wondering if I am liking this one especially because I've bought an apartment so I can relate a bit. Though mine is brand new and in the CBD, my apartment is a low rise, ground plus 4 stories and I am on the 4th, it's no penthouse though, just an ordinary apartment, no quadruple overs and multiple sinks but I do have a balcony. :)

To answer your answer to Shell's queries...

You really are a walking talking version of 50 Shades of Idiot.

People go straight back to work after the death of a loved one everyday. Life goes on, the sun keeps rising and it has been proven it is better to remain busy while grieving than to dress in black and sit in the darkness. From the PM to the person who lives next door to you, people lose parents/children/friends/family and have to go straight back to work. To insinuate that Bec is "odd" to go back to work after experiencing the long and drawn out illness which resulted in the death of her beloved mother is both hurtful and heartless, she would be hanging in there on a minute by minute basis, I think fact you too lived though the experience of the death of your mother suggests you should know better. Work was the only "normal" thing I had to cling on to in the horrible days, weeks and months that followed my fathers death.

The show is not "strange", I watch the show and it is a renovation show, they build and renovate on every episode.

The only odd or strange thing going on here is, as usual, your warped fucking point of view.

LOL :D

I think also, that Bec would realise that winning this show (or at least continuing on) could help set them up for life and I mean no disrespect, but I think I would carry on too. Her mum wanted her to carry on. And as posted above, it probably really does help to keep busy.

Eliza, they have all the seasons available to watch on the Ch9 site if you want to catch up! I missed a couple too so I think I'll have a watch when there's nothing else on.

Have they gone apartment crazy in SA like Melbourne?
We have gone from nowhere you could live in CBD/City area to an excess - and property advisers here tell people not to buy apartments at the moment.
And are apartments expensive there? Adelaide really appeals to me.

I'm loving The Block as a first time viewer. I'm not a fan of Bec, but not because of the way she copes with grief. Everyone copes with losing a loved one differently; there's no way I would have spent a minute away from my mother when she was dying. I used up every bit of annual leave, long service leave and was lucky enough to be able to take leave without pay to be with her and I am glad that I could be with her, holding her hand, to the very last. That doesn't make me a better daughter than Bec. Everyone copes with loss differently, but the loss is hard, no matter what you do. I just prefer other couples to Bec and George.

Yeah, I'm not judging her, odd is all I said.
I just find it odd to be able to cope with being on TV, that's a far different prospect from keeping busy or working.
And she's lucky not to be needed - I had people relying on me and leaning on me at that time.

Unfortunately for us, our mother died suddenly, our father could barely speak he was so grief stricken.
And it was horrendous, our family was scattered everywhere.

One sister in England had a 6 month old baby and they refused to let her leave the country, even with her husband there signing papers and confirming it's OK.

In the end we had to resort to help from our local member, Simon Crean, he was fantastic.

And, hell, visiting that funeral home over and over and over - with different sisters as they came home..........
I need a break, see you.

Take care, kxk; be gentle with yourself. Your mother sounds wonderful and you must miss her. Opening wounds is always painful; I'm sorry.

Whether to buy or not is personal choice, I am not doing it as an investment I'm doing it as a lifestyle choice.

There has been Apartments in the Adelaide CBD since the early 2000's however a boom started about 2 years ago and in the last 6 months there have been probably 3 or 4 new developments. Definitely not the glut that I've seen in Melbourne. The Adelaide City Council and the State Gov want people to move to the city so did a NO STAMP DUTY for all off the plan apartments in the CBD as well as giving new owners a New Build Grant of $8,500. Stamp Duty in SA is probably the highest in Australia, had I paid stamp duty it would have cost about $19,000.

My apartment group is pet friendly (up to 5 kg), there is a push bike storage room, a yoga room, a shared smart car available and it is near Central Market and Chinatown :) :) :) and about 6 streets over from the main shopping strip Rundle Mall. It is 5 minutes walk from the Adelaide Parklands, the Japanese Gardens and heaps of other lovely green space. The prices range from $280,000 for a 1 bedroom apartment (no car park) - $890,000 for a massive 3 bedroom with 2 car parks. I bought a car park, figured when I retire and don't need a car I can rent it out, the car park is worth around $50,000.
