It's self loathing and its not a good thing.
She shouldn't hate being Asian.
You cannot possibly understand how she feels, everyone reacts differently and gets affected in different ways to both negative and positive things. I admit, I did cringe a little when she said it, but upon thinking about it, she has probably copped a lot of shit for being asian, racism against Aboriginal people is the ultimate no-no, and people seem confident that if they aren't racist towards aboriginal people then they are covered, and I have witnessed this first hand. Asians and Indians cop massive amounts of racism, some not intended as malicious and some just brutal, and it isn't anywhere near as frowned upon if even at all in some cases.
What I'm trying to say is that if you yourself had all your life copped shit for something and been made to feel lesser to other people constantly etc..how do you know that you wouldn't wish you looked different and could change the things that you constantly get criticized for?

Just saw a tweet from Jasmine Bell abt Mikkayla, the sisters and Jade. She said they were like a pack, really nasty to Tahan when she was in the house and I believe her.
Don't believe Jasmin, she's a knob lol.
lol... Jas... Who is she?
She needs to stop trying to get her 5mins of fame.

Yeah see I wonder if this is something lost in the edit or hard to convey. Tahan for a long time has talked about the pack of girls out to get her. We haven't seen much of it.

And the comment completely dismisses other Asians and I'd say that's what Tahan has taken offence to, because if she hates being Asian...what does she think of other Asians or other races that have encountered this sort of stuff for that matter.
Tahan as we all know isn't the most articulate of people but I think that's what she was trying to get across.
She's ultimately rejecting who she really is by saying something like that, when she should be taking pride in it.

Indigenous people cop heaps of racism, some parts of Oz more than others, there are some horrible attitudes still out there.
It was not so long ago they were still being hunted for sport & shot....................(first hand..........this info is from elderly relatives who live in mountain areas of Victoria, they talked of times they saw horrible stuff as kids).
I am about quarter Chinese, and have a friend who is half Chinese, another who is Chinese.
When my Chinese friend lived in Tassie, she and her Mum were - spat on, run off the road, and run down chased by cars as pedestrians.
But they were really nervous about going anywhere near WA.
My half Chinese friend has experienced verbal abuse only, and insults.
And I have just had funny looks and stuff, and of course people talk ignorant crap about Asians all the time when they don't know what you are.
I recall feeling very hurt as a teen when a Greek came up to me and spoke Greek, like that's what I must be.
I feel sorry for Mikk's parents/family, they must be crying watching this, and thinking where did we go wrong???
Really the only way........................ is to give your kids what Tahan has, and my family did the same.
Be proud, and don't take any shit.
And that includes jokes........................funny or not, no matter who is doing the joking/mimicking - all that stuff perpetuates racism.
This is one absolute my Mum taught me and I live by.

My kids are adopted, and if that were my daughter in there breaking her heart over something that she has no control over, I'd be crushed.
However - having said that, it is what it is. Sometimes I feel like a lesser person because of this reason or that reason. Then I remember my blessings and I get the fuck on with it all.
Everyone has something that bothers them to the core that they can not change. End of the day, it is that insecurity that keeps us striving to better ourselves. I hope that Mykk can embrace her heritage sooner rather than later, and assure you that when she accepts that issue, another will take it's place. 'Tis human nature.

This is a very simplistic interpretation of what Mikkayla was saying. What Mikkayla said is not meant to be a diss against asians. She was saying that she has always felt "different" and just wants to be accepted as a person rather than people view her with a filter of being asian. As a person belonging to a minority group (albeit not asian) I get exactly what Mikkayla was saying. She doesn't have any ill will towards asians, she just doesn't want all aspects of her life to be viewed through the prism of asianness. Like the comment she made about people asking her if she can speak english, that's a perfect example of a person's view of you totally blinded by her asianness rather than knowing her a person. I don't see Mikkayla's comments as in any way offensive

That's great that you don't but that doesn't mean Tahan or other minorities feel the same way - I can see how it offended Tahan and disappointed others in here that are of different ethnicity. This is a very simplistic interpretation of what Mikkayla was saying. I see no reason for anyone being offended & the only reason to be disappointed is that Mikkayla did not articulate her reasoning as well as she could have. I think the previous poster (@magxy) was spot on.

Let's flip it to the states and have an African American housemate say she hates being African American and wishes she was white, do you think everyone watching would be pleased to hear that?

I think there is a point were you just have to accept that Tahan's interpretation was wrong.

No. & I don't recall Tahan indicating she was offended by that comment - she was there discussing it with all of them & it was only just shown (well after Tahan's racist rants). I got the impression she was understanding about it. I find it hard to believe Tahan would not have said anything if she was truly offended - she hasn't kept her mouth shut about anything thus far.

I think you are missing the point. This isn't about being "pro Mikkayla" it's just about understanding where she's coming from with her comments.

Tahan's entitled to feel disappointed and upset that someone isn't embracing their ethnicity and heritage the way she has.
Calling Mikkayla "racist" is still inaccurate and misrepresentative of what Mikkayla has been saying. End of story.
Tahan grew up in one of the largest indigenous families in Darwin. She's been blessed to have an upbringing where she's surrounded by a large extended family who shares her bloodline and her heritage. That's something Mikkayla has not had in her upbringing. Tahan has no doubt experienced racism, but she will never understand how it feels to be 'othered' even when looking around at your own family. It's a shame Tahan isn't more perceptive and can't appreciate why Mikkayla is struggling with this. That's one of Tahan's biggest flaws, and it's actually something she shares with Tully. They both think that if someone don't respond to something the way they do, there's something wrong with that person or they're wrong for their thoughts/reactions. Tahan isn't able to look at this situation and understand why Mikkayla might feel the way she does. Tahan's mind just goes: "This person feel this way, and I do not. Therefore this person is wrong/stupid/horrible/racist/oversensitive/etc etc."

I'm pretty sure my conclusion came from observation and logic.
Unlike the blind support that Tahan has "if Tahan says it it must be TRUE!" LOL!
