I really don't get why certain people (mainly leftie straight women from my personal experience/obervations) think it is okay to expect hetero males to tippy toe around gay males and 'humour' their awkward sexual advances/crushes just 'cos the suicide rate among young gay males happens to be higher than in other groups or something or other. It's kinda funny and ridiculous to be perfectly honest. lmao

Such unwanted behaviour would not be tolerated by women from 'undesirable' straight guys. Truth to be told even 'average' looking men are called creeps for accidentally daring to look in a similar directon to where a 'pretty' uppity girl happens to be as well. Sexual harassment wouldn't be out of the question if Ben pulled some of the stuff he did in the BB house on females out in the work force. lol

Although I sympathise with their plight of gays and would never deliberately utter hurtful insensitive words, I think sexual advances (however 'innocent' and 'harmless' certain people may deem it) is most definitely crossing the line.

I don't think the reason that people expect hetro males to humour gay males sexual jokes and such is because of the suicide rate among young gay males. That was one point that a member on here had just made, but there are plenty more reasons like I think males are thought to be able to "take care of themselves" unlike women who are considered to weak and vulnerable. Therefore males should be able to "endure" any sexual joke/advance without feeling threatened. Also I am fairly confident that if a gay person knows that a male is not in fact gay they won't be taking things to far anyway.

I think it was the fuss he made plus the wiping his mouth afterwards which was the issue. I don't mind Ed, but the wiping was pretty sad. Ben mentioned it in the DR too and he was philosophical but embarrassed by the fuss Ed had made.

I don't remember this or the context. To me, personally, a kiss is intimate, it more worries me that Ed felt he was pressured to kiss Ben when he wasn't attracted to him and clearly didn't want to. I probably say this more from a personal experience perspective where "friends" shoved me into a taxi with a guy who had been coming on strong all night with me, after I asked them to protect me. Fortunately, I know how to kick guys in the balls, and I have no contact with any of these "friends" anymore

Really…I apologise though. And as a 'leftie straight woman' I won't insult you further :)

I'm not insulted... :)

EDIT: I guess I didn't get the memo that this was some sort of argument. Oh well things fly over my head all the time..... Can you say dumb blonde? LOL :)

That really shocks me to hear actually. Where are you from in NSW if you don't mind me asking? I'm gen Y and it's uncommon that I come across anyone from the same age group who's hugely conservative...to the point where anyone who is opening will usually cop a few backhanded stabs from peers.
I'm from the Northern Beaches in Sydney.

Thank you for this. I'm not sure what 'not that young' is. I would have guessed you were in your late teens or early twenties. I'm not sure how old or young that is to you.
I just want to try one last time, in the spirit of the goodwill you have shown. I'm sure you are aware that the suicide rates for gay teens is far higher than for their straight counterparts. Sometimes it's not what we say or do, but what we passively condone. Every time you snicker about Ed's discomfort at being perceived as gay, you are condoning the behaviour that makes this an insult. I know this is just a fun gossipy forum, but lots of people who don't post here read it. I joined because it seemed a lot nicer than Facebook or twitter. So being something of an elitist (I'm sure you never guessed), I'd like to think we're a bit better than other social media sites. We like clever insults as against cheap shots.
To bring this back to Big Brother…OMG! I'm sure you're well aware that Drew's my favourite. His looks and intelligence were great starting points, but for me, the highlight of the show was his friendship with Ben, who says quite openly that Drew was also his favourite. By sharing a bed with Ben in the Presidential Suite, through the laughs and kisses and hugs, Drew showed through his actions that being gay isn't an issue. Here's one of the 'cool kids' patently not caring about the sexuality of a friend. That matters a lot. Some kid watching BB took heart from that, and another one thought he needed to stop being so uptight about appearing to like that gay kid in his class. As far as I'm concerned that made Drew a standout guy.

LOVE everything you have stated. This is EXACTLY my thoughts on ALL issues

I'm not saying that you're wrong, just that it shocks me given my personal experience. I don't know a great deal of people from the Northern Beaches though.

I thought Tony Abbot was from the northern beaches, maybe that might explain a few things LOL. :)

Because I sound like a patronising cow, I deleted what you have in bold. I of course hoped no-one had noticed. Northern Beaches people are all sorts, same as everywhere else I suspect :)

Well I for one would never engage in any remotely sexual physical stuff (kissing and the like) with another gay guy for the sake of appearing hip and 'progressive' in front of people whose opinion of me don't matter one iota anyway.

I'm willing to risk being called a 'homophobe/bigot', water off a duck's back so on so forth. And the main reason would be to avoid the same 'over-the-top' reactions Ed was criticized for. I can empathize with Ed because I would've reacted the same way.

That is it would've been an 'involuntary' grossed out reaction similar to how players in survivor react once one of the contestants has won an 'exotic delicacies' contests with a half-finished bug still crawling around inside their mouths. lol

Ahahaha I was going to mention that actually but decided against it. Last thing I wanted to do was get into a political debate when I couldn't hide my intense dislike of the Liberal party.

Sometimes when you are raised in a certain way you rebel against it ;)

Good for you....

Yeah that's what I thought. I pity straight left leaning males who are between a rock and a hard place when it comes to gay males and accommodating their 'needs' just 'cos their progressive and all. I don't envy them that's all I have to say. lol

FWIW I consider myself somewhat of a centrist, approximately 60% left leaning and 40% right wing would be my estimate.

Being a youngster myself, and also a 'raging leftie' I will say that I know a fair few people my age who are right wing. I did grow up rather affluent though and attended a private school. All the right wing, or at least economically conservative, people my age that I know are from upper-middle class or upper class families and stand to inherit or take over businesses. Although for all of those in that situation that are right wing, there are more who I know and grew up with who are left wing. And as I said, those who lean right do so more economically than socially, and where they do lean socially it has more to do with social welfare than issues surrounding 'traditional' religious morals, such as abortion or gay marriage. In fact I don't know anyone my age who is against gay marriage, even my more religious friends are for it, at least all my closer ones, it's a pretty hot issue for me so I tend to not bring it up with those I don't know well.
