Michelle Bridges responded to PerthNow after reading Heidi Anderson’s column on fad diets.

FITNESS leader Michelle Bridges has weighed in on fad diets, saying they ‘just don’t work’.

PerthNow columnist Heidi Anderson yesterday wrote about being a faddist, and often giving up on health kicks in favour of burgers and wine.

So moved by Heidi’s column, Michelle emailed PerthNow to back her commitment and respond with some inspirational words of her own:

Time to dump your inner faddist
Heidi, it takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there and share your commitment with the world but it is the first step to making a true, lasting change.

As much as we'd all love a quick fix, fad diets just don't work long-term, and some extreme ones can do more bad than good.

You worked your butt off to shed 12 kilograms on my 12 Week Body Transformation program last year, and you should be proud of how far you've come.

The truth is, living a healthy lifestyle isn’t a piece of cake! It takes work: a lot of sweat, and probably the odd tear too.

But some good news for you and the girls in the office – research shows that even if you've been a yo-yo dieter in the past you can still break the cycle. Nothing is set in stone: change happens when you choose to make it.

And you’re absolutely right, balance and consistency are key.

There’s no trick: the answer is healthy eating and daily exercise. The occasional treat won't stop you from reaching your goals, but it's when 'occasional' becomes daily that you're in trouble, so remember to flex your willpower muscle.

By making this commitment out loud, you're already on your way.
