I'm no such Tolkien nerd. It was the camaraderie of the fellowship that I enjoyed the most. That special bond between them all was totally absent to my detection. Maybe better casting, more time - I don't know. But without that central dynamic, all you're left with is a fairly boring war movie. I like Tolkien, but the battles and Rohan bits bored the crap out of me.

Are you talking about the battles and the Rohan bits in the movies, or the books, that you found boring? Anyway, the battle sequences in the main were really well done in the movies.
Even I got a bit weary with the last half hour of "The Two Towers", and I was irked because I knew that the second book ends with Frodo being poisoned by Shelob and I felt this should have been dealt with in the second movie.
Ha ha, if you combine my love of Tolkien works with being somewhat pro Wellington (and a NZer) it's pretty obvious I will look upon the movie trilogy in a favourable light.
My other favourite franchise used to be the "Aliens" movies with Sigourney, but I felt the 3rd and 4th instalments cheapened the brand big time. And as for Alien v Predator.....
Aliens I always really enjoy, and the original is a sci fi horror classic.

I must say I did enjoy The LotR trilogy. I thought i'd never be happy with Tom gone, but while I agree Bkeela that the movies could've been much longer what we "fans" have to try to accept is that to make money they have to be appealing to all people.
I think Peter Jackson did a brilliant job. And while I agree with GB about Tom and the Shelob bit I still found that I wasn't as disappointed as i thought i'd be. I have the three as the special extended editions and I must say that while it makes the movies longer it certainly adds more to them.

Yes, I may commence a separate Tolkien thread if anyone's interested.
Jackson did a superb job and you could tell he had a great love of the books in doing so. If it had been a fully Hollywood production, with an American director, I'm sure the films would have been completely different and further from their literary source.
I am so looking forward to "The Hobbit" one of these years. I think that should be done over two films.
I'm happy for the Old Forest/Barrow Downs part of "Fellowship of the Rings" to remain in the novel, it's still kind of my favourite part and I can't really explain why.

It was pretty mundane as I recall, but the old dude won at Oscar.
Wrapping pressies this early? Too organised.

Still haven't watched it, even though we've had the DVD for a long time. I've heard mixed reviews about it.

I can't handle Cringe TV or radio. Can't stand prank calls on the radio.
The whole baiting and insulting some poor person, then laughing afterwards "It was only a joke", just embarrasses, offends, upsets me. The point is to laugh at the victim. I only feel sorry for them, and feel dislike for the pranker.

Yeah I agree.
Moreso that I place myself in the situations and it makes me uncomfortable!

Doesn't Kyle do pranks on his radio show?
And yeah I hate hidden camera shows and radio stunts where some
por sod is made to look like a goose too.
You can bet if the tables were turned the people at the other end of
the camera or microphone would be the first to be up in arms.

Wasn't Sasha Baron Cohen going to star as Freddy Mercury in a film biopic of the great Freddy Mercury?
This would mean that for once Cohen is doing something useful.

And directed by Robert De Niro, oh yeah, that will be fun (more fun than attempting to turn rednecks into sexist, anti-semitic, intolerant homophobes for the camera. As much fun as wrestling a fat guy in the nude). Johnny Depp is too introspective for a big, operatic, persona like Freddy Mercury (although I think he would be a good choice for Brian May).

It's hard to get my head around Robert De Niro directing a film about Freddy Mercury.
Don't get me wrong, I like De Niro, but they just seem like chalk and cheese, really.
"Blair Witch Project" I liked....but only the original, not the ham fisted "high budget" sequel.

Peter Jackson to make The Hobbit as feud settled
Wednesday Dec 19 06:02 AEDT
Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has settled a bitter feud with Hollywood studio New Line and will make two films based on Tolkien's The Hobbit, a statement said Tuesday.
The groundbreaking New Zealand director, whose trio of Lord of the Rings fantasy films have grossed more than three billion dollars since 2001, had ruled himself out of a return to Middle Earth earlier this year.
Jackson's decision came after he threatened to sue New Line in a row over royalties from the Lord of the Rings, leading studio chief Bob Shaye to declare that the New Zealander would "never" make The Hobbit.
However a joint statement from Jackson, New Line, and MGM on Tuesday said the legal feud had been settled and that Jackson and professional partner Fran Walsh would serve as executive producers on the two films.
As with the Lord of the Rings, the movies will be shot simultaneously before being released separately. Principal photography was likely to begin in 2009 before the release of the films in 2010 and 2011.
"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson said. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."
New Line co-chairman and co-chief Shaye expressed delight that Jackson and Walsh will be overseeing The Hobbit.
"We are very pleased we have been able to resolve our differences, and that Peter and Fran will be actively and creatively involved with The Hobbit movies," Shaye said.
"We know they will bring the same passion, care and talent to these films that they so ably accomplished with The Lord of the Rings Trilogy."
Jackson's three-part adaptation of the The Lord of the Rings made history when its final instalment "The Return of the King" won the best picture Oscar in 2004, the first time ever that a fantasy film won the award.
The Return of the King won a total of 11 Oscars, including best director for Jackson.

But who else but Peter Jackson could direct this? They'd be mad to use anyone else as director, because they'd suffer a box office slump.
