Last movie you saw

It was made by the same guy who did Donnie Darko so I knew it would be out there.

The ending really annoyed me, and because of scenes cut from the film it seemed disjointed and didn't make sense. I went online after watching it to see what it was all about and I got 3 different stories, Aliens, a story about God and Adam and Eve with the red button in the box being the apple and it was all about the masons and their beliefs and rituals.

It was definitely a movie you had to think about later.

Star Trek
This film reminded me a lot of many other action/sci-fi films I’ve seen in the past, but it was probably a cut above the rest.

I am a Star Trek “noob”, in that I’ve never seen the original TV series, or the ten million spin-offs or any of the other films in the franchise. My knowledge was limited to references in pop culture. This is an excellent entry point into the franchise. It was made with a lot of love, and I assume there were many clever little nods to previous moments in the series.

The special effects were so so so so good. One of the most impressive visual displays I’ve seen in some time (keep in mind I’ve yet to see Avatar). The ending was especially climactic and for lack of a better word.. AWESOME. The closing monologue by Leonard Nimoy (I think it was him?) gave me chills. So epic.

The casting was also really great. Chris Pine looked like William Shatner, Zachary Quinto looked like Leonard Nimoy and so on and so forth. There’s not a lot that I didn’t like about the film really, if anything. This is an incredible update of the series and it makes me really want to check out the rest of the vast Star Trek universe.

yay another convert or atleast possible convert!!

definetly check out 'First Contact'...and if you can get past the crappy 70's visual effects 'Wrath of Khan' is epic

Awesome. I'll do that, thanks! I was kinda wondering where the best place to start was because there's so many spin offs and movies and all other kinds of stuff. I figured the original series would be the logical starting point but I dunno D:

man, i just typed out a whole rant of all these good Star Trek episodes...but...i'll leave it to you to find your feet...
'First Contact' is Next Generation cast but it would be good for explaining some of the history....might be a good first choice but im partial to it because it was my first Trek movie.

Should really get Cle to weigh in on this lol

You rang :)

I would reccomend anyone wanting to get into Trek to get the the original series and watch all of that... You could possibly hire them or "gasp" buy them if you can stomach the extortionist price that they want. I can't understand how Star Trek stuff is so bloody expensive.

Anyway yeah start with the original series and then move onto TNG .... Starting with the movies might not make sense unless you only want to follow one particular series of Star Trek.

Best thing to do if you're a star trek noob is, there's dvd packs out there of select episodes that go through different themes and different storylines/villians across all the franchises.

There's be a good way to get a feeling for the different series and over all stories for if you ever wanted to go back to it.

Although don't expect them to be as slick and polished the recent movie. Some of the original series and the next generation episodes are damn fine story telling though. Some are not.

Dear John. I expected it to be a bit sadder, I thought I'd cry and I didn't. And the ending seemed a bit abrupt. It was still a really good movie, though.

You want heartbreaking? Go see Remember Me.

Saw this yesterday and I loved it. New York looks wonderful in this movie, the kid is fabulous - so non Hollywood, Brosnan I usually detest and he's fabulous.
A great cast and an interesting family/drama/lovestory with an wack you in the face ending.

Of course I declare my bias - my celeb crush/obsession Robert Pattinson is in it - and damn he's gorgeous without the creepy eyes and white chalk make-up, and he does a fine job in this.

But I would like this story without RP.

Emilie De Ravin, Chris Cooper, Leno Olsin, etc - really great cast. Directed by Alan Coulter- he of the superb Sopranos fame.

Go see it it's got a hell of an ending.

You can join me & friends at Hoyts Chadstone Saturday if your in the neighbourhood:)?

Yeah bit far to go. Private jet is in the workshop :D

I'm in Adelaide..........

I don't know why us SA members don't organise some kind of meet and greet.

Case 39 on DVD.

Similar to 'Orphan' this is about a child care worker (Renee Zelwegger) who works on child abuse cases and she is drawn to this one girl who she saves from her psychotic parents but she is not what she seems.

I did like this, I like Orphan better but this had some good thrills and scares, Renee annoyed me a bit with her sucking on a lemon face through most of the movie.

Red Cliff.
The Chinese director John Woo, back home, with his ancient battle of Empires movie.

This is a War movie, in the most direct way. It's about the Battle of Red Cliff, between the North and South Chinese Empires around the year 200AD (they have names, but...) and they movie is very much about the battles, their planning. Lots of soldiers running about stabbing, riding horses, firing arrows, etc.

And if you are into that sort of thing it's really great. It isn't just random yelling and fighting. You have this wise Strategist who wears white, teaming up with mighty hero generals, and coming up with brilliant plans to win the day, and you see the plans acted out clearly. Ancient Chinese folklore come to life.

There's a small amount of Love Interest to make the war a bit more personal, but not much. It's not about that stuff.

"The Man From Earth" again

I love this movie.. I might change my vote on IMDB to 8/10.....

The story of a college professor that has decided to quit his job, pack up all of his belongings and head off to another place. On this day he gathers a small group of friends to tell them he is leaving and why. Turns out he has been around for 140 centuries and as a Cromagnum man survived to the present day. But he moves around every 10 years because people start to notice he doesn't age. So on this fateful day he decides to tell a close group of people he has come to know as friends.

This movie just works for me. It's the simple setting, the small ensemble cast and the fact they all did what I though was a believable job of acting. the only thing for me that threw a spanner in the works and ruined a top score was the Jesus bit. When he said he took the role of Jesus and you could see that coming, and I was hoping against hope he would not have said that but he did.

Despite that this movie really works for me and I love it.

This is also the only movie to date I know of where the makers of the movie wanted yo to download it and if you liked it buy the movie on DVD.....

Now why can't Hollywood do that?

8/10

The Green Zone... I enjoyed it, didnt think I would, but it wasnt bad...

Yeah I quite enjoyed this. It was one of those films that started, kept the pace up, never slowed down or lost me at all. So yeah very enjoyable and entertaining. It was very on the nose about the issue of false and deliberately misleading claims of wmds leading up to the Iraq war. Only thing was, early on in the film, it was a little bit too contemporary with the language and dialogue with what we know how. Although I know all this was known then, it was just a little bit too perfect for the clarity we have in hindsight. Also being a fictional account of the stuff that did go on, in a way detracts from the fact this sort of stuff did go on. Still a very entertaining film.

Alice in Wonderland

Yeah, this was pretty dull and lacking any real substance. It was just such a hollow film, where all the effort went into the visuals, but not into a story or anything truly great. Very disappointing. It was all generally meh.. Not terrible or unwatchable or boring, just dull. There as no sense of fun, or adventure or excitement. It just was.
Also the 3d was pretty bad. Obviously 3d fake environments don't blend as well in 3d with live action for one. Also the 2d to 3d was at some points unnoticable but at others clearly visible Where it's perspectives on parts of the faces, hairs, tables changing weirdly. Or even some terribly bad ones like early on before wonderland there's a shot of the manor house and a tree which literally they just did a perspective map by placing a gradiated circle roughly over it. 3d only worked when it was the 3d elements rendered in two perspectives. This annoys me also because one of the few films i'm really looking forward to this year, Clash of the Titans is using this 2d-3d technology and it's been rushed in since avatar came out.
So yeah, the film is visually nice, but not much story. A lot of just odd to be odd, not to be clever. Depp as the mad hatter adds nothing, isn't likeable or really anything. Just meh. Maybe the critters ect may stand out for the kiddies. There was just no sense of wonder in wonderland.
Good things were tweedle dee and tweedle dumb, and the queen of hearts, but like everything in the film didn't get get enough of any of them.
I honestly wouldn't recommend this film to anyone.

A lot of the imagery was based on the American McGee game Alice..... Google that if you don't know what I am on about.

I find Tim Burton films a hit and miss affair sometimes.
