Last movie you saw

Tonight I watched my favourite Tarantino movie (in fact, I really only like him these days for this particular movie).

The "Jackie Brown".

Jackie Brown is good but my two favourite Tarantino films are Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill. I really want that 4 hour cut of the latter already >_<

I've always heard Death Proof was awful. Nonetheless, I wish to purchase it but I can't find a copy on DVD anywhere. I did get Planet Terror though, but have yet to watch it.

I'm just watching Duchess, the Kiera Knightly movie that's just come out on DVD. Having already read the original biography by Amanda Foreman that the movie was written from I don't understand how anyone who hasn't read the book could make any sense of the movie. There's HUGE very important chunks missing. I guess that they can't show everything but they've cut out important things for trivial stuff. I guess they have to go for what makes a good (??) movie but it's got me baffled. So far, 3/4 into the movie, it's not doing the book justice at all.

Anyone else seen it? What did you think?

I wanna see Terrror Planet and Death Proof but the DVD covers look so cheesy it put me off

Well they are meant to be homages to old low budget, flawed movies.

They are deliberately made to look like old movies, on scratched and dirty film. Planet Terror even has a missing reel and jumps ahead like 20minutes.

Planet Terror is the only one worth watching in my opinion. It's an entertaining b-grade type movie, it plays off so many of the cliches, it's great!

Death Proof, i didn't like so much. The structure is terrible, and while there were some interesting bits, it wasn't enough to save it.

Cool in that case I'll get Planet Terror

Tarantino is obsessed with exploitation films from the 70s. Basically all of his feature length movies have featured elements from that era in them. Whilst I do enjoy it and think it's somewhat his signature thing now, I wish he'd try something new. Inglourious Basterds looks rather interesting, though the first trailer wasn't anything special. I fear he may have peaked with Pulp Fiction.

He did have a go at TV shows...... He did a 2 parter CSI episode. That was actually quite quirky and fun

Oh really? I didn't know about that, I'll have to see it. He's also produced some stuff like that martial arts film "Hero".

Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull - Plot was sorta random, all over the place. But still fun.
Tropic Thunder - Genius!! So so funny :D

That Inglorious Bastards trailer.. it literally has nothing in it to make me interested. All i could think of, these guys are going in to commit war crimes and terrorism. I don't have faith that Tarantino well make any reference to this. If he does, then cool, but I see it as once again people cheering for bad stuff, done by their side in a film, while in the real world condemning and calling these sort of acts by others as terrible, unthinkable, unjustifiable actions. Never making the connection between the two. So there could be an interesting subtext to the film.. but instead it'll probably just be these guys killing nazi's. Where's it going to go?
It really was a terrible teaser, that only has those who like anything tarantino just because its his. Like those that prefer death proof over planet terror. Planet Terror was way better and could have stood on it's own not as part of Grindhouse. Death Proof would be too crap to do that.

OK stupid question but what is grindhouse

Originally Planet Terror and Death Proof were part of a double feature called Grindhouse. Released as one movie, with fake movie trailers before, and an intermission and fake trailers between Planet Terror and Death Proof. Both films were shorter also. It was meant to replicate the experience of old "grindhouse" cinema's from the 70s that'd show old worn b grade type movies. This is why all the films are made to look old.
Robert Rodriguez did planet terror, Tarantino Death Proof.

However when it was released at the cinema's in the states it didn't do well.
It was plague by problems of people walking out after planet terror, not understanding the concept and unaware that there was a second film to come. It was also longish, and with death proof being the weaker of the films and last, it seemed to drag on too long to keep people interested. So what they did was pull it from theatres, both Robert and Quentin took their films and re-edited them to be longer to stand alone, and they were then released separately. The double feature idea being a bit of a failure.

The originally planned to have the grindhouse as a franchise, where they, or different directors would do shorter films as a double feature under the banner. Obviously that isn't going to happen. Although they might still do stand alone films under it. Robert Rodriguez wants to turn one of the fake trailers from the film, Machete into a real full length film.

Ah........ That sounds like a good concept. Pity it didn't work. But yeah it would be kind of longish but maybe had they incorporated a real intermission so people could get drinks, have a potty break etc. Could have been good.
