Last movie you saw

I just saw a funny little film called "Return to Oz", it's a 'sequel' to The Wizard of Oz that was made like 40 or 50 years later. It's very different though. No more singing and dancing along a yellow brick road, just a Witch who likes to steal the heads of women and girls and a giant rock guy who's turned most in oz into stone.

And these freaky things called Wheelers.

Did I mention that the movie starts with Dorothy's aunty and uncle dumping her in a psychiatric facility to get shocks to the head.

I used to LOVE this film when I was younger. I was going through a legitimate 'The Wizard of Oz' phase; still am it appears - though I would watch this every single afternoon after I got home from school, and drag my friends to come watch it too. For me it was absolutely amazing. Nowadays if I watched it, I don't think it would be so much. A little bit of backstory: the reason why it's twisted so much is because Disney acquired the rights to the 'Oz' when it became partnered to MGM, wanted to make a prequel/sequel/remake/whatever to TWOO, but realized that it would be unfeasible to try and make a movie as great as the original. Back to the drawing board, and a decidedly different, darker, edgier film had to be made to differentiate it from the MGM film we have come to know and love. The movie became a combination of two of the 'OZ' books, and a bit more tampering along the way, and tadaa; we now have 'Return to OZ', a box office bomb, but a cult favourite nonetheless. There's even a small little tribute to it in the Storybook Canal attraction at Disneyland Paris, the only place it will pop up as it's pretty much an embarrassment for Disney at the moment. I love my Disney, I do, but they (Imagineering and Walt Disney Studios) have got to get their head out of the sand - acknowledge their past, and continue to make great movies and attractions.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Damn it was good to see that again last night. It's been a long time. The open scenes are completely fantastic, and the ride through the mine in a trolley is still heaps of fun. One of those movies that I wish I had a big high def plasma for.

Seven seems like it is doing a run of Big Old Time blockbuster action movies.... Independence Day on Sunday. Great.

I saw the Crystal Skull last night.

It was entertaining enough, though the CGI irritated me. I hate computer animated special effects. It looks too fake. Nothing can, and probably will ever beat the brilliance of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and it didn't need CGI. Jurassic Park is the one exception I can think of where CGI worked a treat - and only because the CGI was used with moderation. The trouble with recent Spielberg and Lucas productions is they employ entire scenes and landscapes that are animated. Not just dinosaurs - everything.

Judging Crystal Skull apart from the CGI - it is probably equal to Temple of Doom. Not worth buying on DVD for weekly viewings, but certainly a reasonable excuse to eat some popcorn and drag your friends along to see.

Great... we're going to see this next week. Too much/crap CGI means that Mr Raven will bitch the whole way through the movie lol. I'm still looking forward to it though :)

Sounds like Mr Raven is a very sensible man. It is a fun movie though.

I have a question, maybe someone can assist. We're going to see the Indiana Jones movie (gold class) next week and wanted to take Ts 13 year old niece. The film is rated M, I think. Will the cinema let her in, do you think? I might have to find out before we head in there.

She'll get in no problem.

M isn't a restricted rating, its just guidelines.

If you want to read about the classifications.

In no way is the film unsuitable for a 13 year old any ways. The rating guidelines are so completely out of wack with reality.

Yeah I saw Indiana Jones today.. i enjoyed the film.. but im really not quite sure what i think... I dont want to spoil anything.. some things were just.. I understand the Indiana Jones films have never been realistic, just made seriously, went a little over the top.. but then I think thats just a reaction to having seen the other films a massive amount of time. It wasnt dark.. Also they went on to explain too much of the crystal skulls.. honest i think it would have been better to, you have these things, there's great power, but not exposition and a clear explanation for the powers origin.
Its an entertaining film, but one that is so easy to nitpick. I will see it again and try to enjoy the ride.

if ya wanna see a good movie, watch napoleon dynamite on channel ten on saturday night..
it is a top movie.. fair dinkum..

This is not a movie but a TV series.. I recently rented the BBC series North and South (author Elizabeth Gaskell) out of curiosity and man was I pleasantly surprised... It's nearly 4 hours long but every minute of Richard Armitage is worth it. He is just yummilicious :D The new Mr Darcy for me.... :)

I already posted a thread about Mr Darcy but not many people were interested in it. Now that he won't be swimming so much maybe he could go into the movies. :)

Thanks for your help, mate. We actually phoned the cinema to check and I think it's the MA rating where the age restriction applies.

Anyways, I saw the first Indy movie when I was about 12, it's supposed to be a kid's flick.
