Last movie you saw

Ok, a confession. I went to see This Is It last night at the Coburg Drive In.
And the reviews are pretty accurate in saying that it's an exploitation of a dead man, but it's still pretty damn interesting and entertaining. Seeing all the background stuff behind the production of a big stage show. And of course you have to like his music as a precondtion.

For all the speculation on MJ's health, I have to say that he was pretty damn fit for a 50 year old. He could zip around the stage better than I could.

As a nice contrast the Drive In was also playing Saw 6, so when Micheal is doing his over the top "I love you all" monologues, I could turn around and see someone getting horribly mangled by one of Jigsaws evil devices.

The new Star Trek movie on DVD......

A bit disappointed on one aspect. When I made my initial purchase I was hyped by the product description that said that the version I have has the option to make a digital copy of the movie.

For those that don't know some movies are being released this year with a 2nd or 3rd disk which would have as its name implies a 'digital copy' of the movie. When you insert the extra disk into your dVD drive it will make a copy of the film on your hard drive that you can watch, or put on a portable player like an ipod or such.

I think the idea is neat and wish every DVD could offer this.

Onto the movie itself well it was fun. I loved this reboot of Star Trek. It breathes new life and energy into a franchise that frankly had become stale, dry, and dead.

7/10

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

I didn't like it. I can't fault the visual appeal of the film, nor the beauty of Lily Cole, who plays Valentina. But at many points I nearly considered walking out. I'm just not on Terry Gilliam's wave length. Seeing Jabberwocky as a kid was one of my most unhappy childhood experiences, and I've always hated Monty Python.

Lily Cole was worth the admission price though.

Then if you saw Time Bandits you would have slit your throat........That was gawdawful.

I've seen Time Bandits, and feel fairly neutral about it. Twelve Monkeys had some interesting moments, but was ultimately led down a path that didn't appeal to me.

you surprise me...... TB was a Terry Gilliam movie and I thought it worse then any movie ever made.

This is it :D It was beautifully done, and the concerts would have been amazing. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was no annoying narrative or overly chummy scenes.. they just let the footage speak for itself. Loved it.

I've been thinking about seeing Mao's last dancer next, I've heard some good reviews....

Well it's got lots of midgets for a start.

Scenes like the Knight bursting out of the wardrobe...
God as a fussy English bureaucrat.

There's a heap of great imagery.
Gilliam is tricky like that. He's great at Images. That historical shabby look. But sometimes his stories are tougher to get into emotionally. And his humour is very hit or miss. I can understand if he doesn't click with a lot of people, and I don't mean it in a "well, that just means you aren't smart/sophisticated enough" way. He's awkward.

The next step up from this film is The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Once again, you can either go "Wow, this is amazing", or "Argh. This is a Mess!" And both attitudes are quite legitimate.

Yeah, that's my problem with Imaginarium. The characters aren't sympathetic. I need to make emotional connections with characters, otherwise it is pointless.

Mild spoiler:

The most sympathetic character is the Devil, who is actually a more decent fellow than Doctor Parnassus.

But anyone who accepts Gilliam's quirks should enjoy the film, as it is visually impressive.

Star Trek 7/10 - Ultimately felt like a Michael Bay blowout, i like my movies with more human interest than cgi effects but i like the acting minus Anton Yelchins god awful Russian accent.

Quarantine 5/10 - Remake of [REC] could have been far better than it was, disappointing.

Adulthood 6/10 - Sequel to Kidulthood, a very eye opening film but the sequel felt very disjointed and hard to follow.

Transformers 2 on DVD.

It should be called "Tansformers, people in disguise!" I thought I was watching a Bollywood movie or something! Never seen so many orange people in one movie before.

Anyway the story was lame, the acting was bad the action was good but by the end of it I was hitting fast forward on the CGI robots battling for like 10 mins or more! Megan was dumb and vacuous as usual but hot and Isabel Lucas was fun to watch lol

5/10 how generous........ Isabel Lucas being a robot didn't surprise me....... Sums up her acting ability right there. Megan Fox and the new version of Devastator have one thing in common, they both suck.

I HATED the new version of Devastator. Instead of 6 trucks combining to form a mega robot it's just this beasty squat thing with a vacum cleaner on the front. What??????

Then I noticed who was the director and it all made sense. They should have left it at one movie and all would have been forgiven..

There is a 3rd one coming either next year or the year after..... A freaking 3rd installment.

Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun

Love all the hardware in this. Derrick Meddings model work is as always exceptional.. Being a Gerry Anderson production of course some of the stuff was a little over the top but that did not detract from the hardware being interesting. Liked the transport aircraft which lands vertically and the centre fuselage can disconnect and connect directly to the side of the airport terminal... And at the space centre the whole control building can go up and down out of the way and be hidden... Really OTT but fun.

The confusing bit for me was the second flight. We've established in the movie that the astronaut that is on Earth isn't native to that particular world as he has reversed vision and such. I found this bit silly. Sure the other Earth is a mirror image but to take it that literal I found silly. I thought they took that just a bit too far. But when he is in space he finds the ship he left because all the writing is the right way round again. But what he forgot is that
electricity is the same in both worlds.... Big oops.....

Still it was a fun romp. 6/10

Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone

I must say this was good. The DVD cover said 'all new digitally remastered' and yep it was. The added clarity was great in some scenes, and a problem for others. Especially where some effects were concerned. But this is a fun "put your brain on hold and have fun" kind of movie. I loved it from the first few minutes to the end when they defeated the bad guy Overdog....... Michael Ironside played a good villain. Pity he
was so easy to kill.

They even had amphibious amazons.

That was a fun film. 6/10 too for this.
