I think if I had a wheelchair bound family member I'd find $15k for one of those. That would make an enormous difference to their lives.
 
Wheelchairs generally don't need batteries.

They are also good for this kinda thing ... some of which I used to do as a pre-teen using my mum's 1st husband's chair.

Actually, heaps of wheelchairs do need batteries.

The beauty of the new device is people get to be upright, that would be awesome for someone with spinal damage who is forever sitting or lying. They'd have to take learning how to use it slowly though, being upright brings on all sorts of new challenges.

Some are designed for batteries, but the basic concept doesn't need a battery, as Derspatz rightly pointed out. This will be a drawback to the innovation. Another might be its ability to negotiate uneven surfaces. Wheelchairs have their limitations also in this respect, but from the look of it, would still be more flexible in circumstances where uneven ground might be encountered. Besides that, how can you play murderball (wheelchair rugby) with one of those? Even able bodied people would like a wheelchair for that.

It looks good though. Price might come down quickly with mass production.
 
In the case of spinal injuries which is what this discussion relates to battery operated wheelchair are commonly used.

I think if you had spent a number of years sitting, the minor inconvenience of having to charge a battery operated device would be negligible. I would have thought it would be used in conjunction with a wheelchair not instead of.
 
Change of many things requires going to powered devices - and it doesn't seem to have bothered us a bit. We used to type on manual typewriters and then went to electric and now computers (both needing power). We used to use a landline telephone which would still work (mostly) when the power went out then went to cordless that need power and mobiles that need their batteries charged often. We even used to read books where the only power required was to lift a finger to turn the page and have now moved on to ebook readers that require powering up. Seems like part of our natural 'progression' to me. And the benefits appear to far outweigh any convenience.
The point about uneven surfaces is a good one though. And not addressed at all in the video. We have a friend who lost her ability to stand/walk as the result of a virus. She is currentlyspending a fortune in America at an institute that aims to get them back on their feet with extremely intensive workouts. I reckon she would grab one of these in a shot.
