Clue - this is an Aussie, transformed into Rhamses Egyptian ruler.
I don't know what to make of this film. I'm big on Egyptian history, going there was one of the best trips I've been on. I just hate that they make a big budget film and then just make it one of complete fiction and in a way that completely misrepresents the reality. I don't mind at all when films like Gladiator are fiction. It's telling a good story and not going to great lengths to fictionalize the time period.
Yes there's the white washing of the cast. What I find extra strange is the white washing of the artwork. We all know what Egyptian art looked like so why anglofy it? It just looks wrong. You do have to wonder if there is some racist undertones to making the film with this approach. Especially with the racist aspect of claiming the Pharaohs were not Africans.
Amazing ancient African civilization. They have to picture them as white anglo-saxons. Even in their world famous artwork. All the great achievements of their civilization in art and construction. They can't have that as coming from Africans. So of course it's all made by foreigners. Can't depict them as a civilized society that achieved all this, so they have to have them as oppressive slave owners. Where everything is built not from their own doing but on the backs of enslaved people.
It just seems all the major deviations from reality and history are done in a way to denigrate the accomplishments of the Ancient Egyptians.
