Every Big Brother Friday Night Live episode in Remastered HD (The 2005-2008 BB Special Show)

We loved friday night live over here in australia, stick to pommy big brother mate.
truly an insult that you'd willingly choose to watch channel seven’s uninspired, garbage housemate basement games over fnl.
I think he just doesn't quite get the phenom the show was in aus from 05-08. I can tell the foreigner bb fans from the aussie bb fans when they say stuff like that about fnl.

FNL was always really liked in my household. Other than my mother (a very passionate BB purist) who did not really care for it, but my sister really enjoyed it so she would watch with her. When we watched all of the series on a binge she would make us skip FNL though.

FNL is probably the first thing that comes to mind whenever a Gen Z viewer is asked about the show. Yes I do agree that it has nothing to do with the actual premise of the show, it was still a bit of fun to add in. And I personally really enjoyed Mike, Bree and Fitzy on the panel. An extra live show added to the event feel and it was another opportunity to discuss the show and interview evictees.

I do not expect it to make a return next year, you'd think it would have been confirmed during the upfronts, but BB returning home to TEN seemed far fetched in itself, so who knows what will be done? But if TEN were willing to add it into their schedule then it would be a big win for them on Friday nights. It's guarenteed to rate well. And what does TEN even show on Friday nights atm?

If it were to come back it would be great to see Mike, Bree and Fitzy all back. I very much doubt it, but how cool would it be?! But then again we don't even know if Mike is coming back. I personally am in favour of FNL But IDK if the poltical climate of 2025 could handle the controversial jokes that were said during FNL back in the day, it would definitely need to be workshopped.
you're 100% right about the political climate nowadays completely changing the vibe of FNL. That show was insanely crass especially towards the end. A fair bit of it has aged like milk in the hot sun.

However, some of the jokes are quite clever and fun to look back on and laugh along with.

I recently contacted mike (as I already share rare friday night games eps when I find them, which was the brief celebrity fnl spinoff) and he said he hadn't yet been contacted about the reboot. So I have strong doubts he'll return.

That probably means FNL won't return either. It would initially do super well for network ten on friday nights but I think it would wear thin pretty quick as it definately was a product of it's time and only worked because big brother was massive back then anyway.

With yet another big brother reboot it would be a risky add on to the show I think... if they maybe did one fnl episode post the bb season with all of the housemates from the season competing and then they see how it rates they might bring it back for a full season. The show would only work with mike, bree and fitzy though. There's no point in rebooting it without them. And honestly, I'm nearly 100% they won't bother. It's been 20 years now since they first appeared on BB....

I watched FNL at the time but it wasn’t must see tv for me or anything, just the nature of free to air tv at the time I think. Whenever I rewatch BB I always skip FNL episodes. They aren’t entertaining to me personally. But maybe I’ll watch them someday for some fresh content.

Not that my opinion matters more or that there is anything wrong with enjoying it, just offering another perspective.

Fair enough. FNL kind of ruined the illusion of the show when it was included in 2005. I think a lot of purists who were obsessed with the format hated it. The ninjas aspect as well was kind of impeding on the whole 'total isolation' idea the show was meant to have. For me though, it was the only aspect of big brother I truly liked as a kid

It was unashamedly aimed at the younger end of the Big Brother fanbase. It had a job to do and did it well.

That's a good point - whilst free to air may still be a bit of a wasteland on Friday nights would people really watch it over the streaming alternatives?

Personally I do want some kind of challenge element to be retained and FNL may be the best way to do that in a way that feels Channel 10 rather than Channel 7. I'd just rather they took a less juvenile approach to it than FNL often did and ideally keep episodes closer to one hour than two.

I have two conflicting mindsets on it. On one hand it's got absolutly nothing to do with the origins of Big Brother and as you say it does kind of destroy the whole concept of no outside world contact and it breaks the 4th wall even too much for BB. But at the same time I grew up knowing FNL to be part of BB so it's what I know BB to be. IDK the younger fans as well as the casual audience seem to really think highly of it so I would argue it would do well. Whether or not TEN would be willing is another question. It wouldn't feel right without Mike, Bree and Fitzy but the likelihood of them returning is very slim.

Whilst I and probably nor anyone else expect FNL to return it is interesting to hear Mike confirm he has not been contacted. If he was to be involved you'd think he would have been made aware prior to the announcement just as Mel Tracina has. But maybe the logistics of his invovlment are to be delayed due to Seven's hold back. I guess we will see. I would say I lean towards wanting him back and being invovled. It just won't feel 100% like Big Brother with a different narrator. But Mel could just do it, Gretel was always fine as a narrator in the occasional extended Sunday daily shows.

I don’t think it is tbh, the show will obviously have a different feel when watching without Mike Goldman narrating but it’s sounding like they don’t want it to be completely the same and are looking to recapture the magic in a new way for a new audience.

I think one of the big mistakes ITV made during development for the BBUK revival was bringing Marcus Bentley back instead of a new take on the format in the UK

Ummm I’d think after more than 20 years of active posting and moderation on these forums he’d get it.

As for FNL its appeal skewed younger. Not saying there weren’t adults that also got some enjoyment out of it but it definitely wasn’t universally loved.

This is ban level insulting. The opinions of international fans are equally as valid.

What was the version of FNL called on the Channel 9 era? It was short lived, I’m sure I haven’t imagined it. Didn’t she present it, Shelly Craft from The Block?

Saturday Showdown - only lasted a few weeks. Not sure if Late Night Feast was the same season. That was more enjoyable.

If 10 are considering it it might make sense to leave it till series 2 and then use HMs from the first revival series in the Fitzy and Bree role.

I’m sure Saturday Showdown was originally intended to last longer than it did. The way they shoved Mike into a commentator role was cruel and embarrassing for him I bet. Really didn’t suit Shelley at all.

Just like most things in the Nine era it was done half assed and dumped before it even really started. I’d be shocked if they had any plans for it to be expanded beyond the limited schedule.

What’s actually sad about Mike is how he’s overstayed his welcome. Also the way he’s used BB to shield his toxicity.

It's fine. He's trying to stick up for us aussies because FNL really was the kind of phenom you had to be in australia for and at the time it was one of our more beloved shows ever. People talked about it everywhere socially. It is straight up insulting for an aussie bb fan to hear people bashing the show. Sure, it was aimed at a younger audience but it was so important to a lot of our childhoods and without it there wouldn't have been anything else to look forward to on tv. I'll never believe anyone that claims to understand it's significance by watching 240p youtube reuploads of the show. You really had to be there as a kid watching it live on australian tv to understand the hype and general appreciation for that show at the time.

Yea that was quite odd putting him on the same level as the previous year's housemate... I never understood that. I'll stand by it though that the only problem with that show was the tasks department. Absolutely awful. Everything else to do with that show (while still not as good as FNL at all) was completely fine.

I think in the australian entertainment industry people need to overstay their welcome. We have literally no work here so obsessing over the same job you've had for many years is probably the way to go sadly. Also I think he never tried to shield his persona when presenting Big Brother. On that show he was unapologetically toxic on live tv on many occasions. On his other shows that weren't big brother related he was a far less crass mike goldman on tv.
