Doctor Who

Oh what an idiot. Whether you watched the early Who or not the fact it's there can't be ignored, it's part of the magic that Who is so imbedded in people's childhood psyche and such an iconic part of English culture, and of course Who is a whole world because of the endurance & length of the show.

I don't like Tate much but I'm pretty sure she will surprise me & be good, I trust these casting people they have been spot on. But I loved Sally and hope to see her in the future. Have you read David Tennant's wiki page? I love that he has been a passionate Dr Who fan since he was about 3.

dear sweet Nutmeg (oh how I miss her in this thread) who have recently discovered the joys of DW and want to learn all about it. I love it because as a long term fan i'm more than happy to help and nurture new fans.up.

Oh, does nutmeg not post here anymore? :(
I know I've gone AWOL, but I try to find time to pop in sometimes to see my old buddies & to welcome wonderful new additions to the Doctor Who fan family like Aquamarine.

Just keep in mind that Burn is working out his own issues here and don't let them affect you too much. RTD has taken some liberties, but to say he's not a fan is just ott. Whilst we may bitch amongst ourselves about him and what he's done equally we should all spend time on our knees each day being thankful that he was able to get it back on the air at all.

If you really want to see how us Who fans are conflicted about it just visit Outpost Gallifrey someday, but in the meantime don't let other's angst upset you too much.

You know, I'm so green with the DW thing that I don't even know who RTD is! I'm assuming he's the producer of the new series?

With the "true fan" thing, I guess what I was trying to say was that I agree with Burn in his recount of the arrogance in someone who completely discounted the making of what is now an epic series.

I'm gonna get all corny now but the discovery of DW for me is a personal journey of "pure sci-fi fantasy, escapism" (perfectly put funinonebabe!). I'm an absolute sci-fi fanatic and have watched just about every sci-fi flick on tv, however the old DW series never really did it for me. I have to say though, I didn't really give it a chance. I'd made up my mind on viewing the first 5mins of an episode in 1978 (I was 9 at the time), and haven't had any interest since, based on that first viewing.

Which only adds now to the curiosity and deep need to revisit the old episodes to see where it all began. Unlike any other sci-fi series, Dr Who is unique and unpredictable, and that's what I enjoy most about the series. I'm thinking hubby is pretty much set up now on what to buy me for Christmas and Birthdays for the next say, 5 years! :p

Did you like any sci fi as a kid? or was sci fi loving a later in life thing?

I am sure you will fall in love with the old series just as you have with new one :) and I think i wlll be with you in collecting the old series over the next few years :) hmm this dvd collection thing of mine is getting out of hand lol

^^I discovered sci-fi as a teenager in 1985 with Captain Kirk in Star Trek. My mum loved it and would watch it every week. The Star Trek thing went for years with me, and I loved each and every series. My favourite was always Jean Luc Picard in The Next Generation, but it didn't take long to get into Janeway when Next Generation faded out.

I also loved Cinematic sci-fi's like Spice and Star Wars (I loved the first movie as a kid!), and in fact am just discovering the first 3 Star Wars now! Not as good as DW though.

Another so-so sci-fi was Stargate, but I certainly wasn't a die hard fan of it.

Actually, I've just remembered something. Rather than going back and editing, I remember watching Space 1999 as an 8 year old and it absolutely fascinated me, so my love of sci-fi definately started as a kid! heh. Of all the sci-fi's that I've seen though, nothing beats Dr Who. It's really quite unto itself isn't it :)

Doctor Who to return for fifth series in 2010

David Tennant to return to the Tardis

After months of media speculation, BBC One can confirm that the Bafta-award winning Doctor Who will return for a fifth series in spring 2010.

Viewers are in for a treat this Christmas, as a special episode starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue will be broadcast on BBC One in December 2007. Series four, which went into production in July 2007, will hit UK screens in spring 2008 with a special episode for Christmas 2008.

In 2009, Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies. The full length fifth series will transmit in 2010.

Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: "Doctor Who is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas. Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series in 2010."

Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales, says: "The success of Doctor Who is a fantastic tribute to the dedication and expertise of the production team at BBC Wales who have worked on the project from the outset. This announcement is marvellous news for all involved, and more importantly for the programme's amazing fan base and audience. BBC Wales is looking forward to producing the fifth series."

Following the critically acclaimed season three finale, the BBC has announced that Catherine Tate is set to return to the Tardis for the complete 13-week run of series four of Doctor Who, reprising her role as Donna from the 2006 Christmas special. Freema Agyeman, who won praise for her portrayal of Martha Jones in series three, is also set to return mid series four.

Not at all happy with this idea. I guess it ensures another season from Tennant (despite their not confirming it) since the "gap year" would seem to be specifically to aid him, but I remember the old days and any break from normal scheduling is a worrying sign. Also a year without Who? Just after they've got me hooked again - aaaaarrrrggghhhh!

OK just thinking out aloud.....

Were the living beings just those statues that we saw around the
old house, that surrounded the TARDIS or was it a reference to
all statues?

And if it's just those 4 how did they go all those billions of years
with not looking at each other or such?

And what would have happened if someone had got at them with
say a sledgehammer and broken them to bits.... Or would they
have been impervious to attack?

And would a mirror in front of them stop them?

Best not to over-think it I reckon. Actually the whole "quantum lock" thing was rather silly - but who cares, it made a great episode. (Aside from anything else as soon as that light goes out in the cellar they're free again.)

No doctor for a year sucks - but Rose might be ready to pop back by 2010, and the ABC will have a chance to repeat everything from 2005-2008, they should start classic who repeats also. They can also amp up the 3 spinoff shows I guess - sheesh considering all of that work on spinoffs no wonder they need a break. DT doing Hamlet next year and that would be exhausting.

WTF? no Dr Who for a whole year? just specials? what is going on????? why why why??????

ok rant over lol

Aqua i am a big Star Trek nut love it love it love it :) Love Jean Luc mmmm sexy captain lol I am in the process of collecting Star Trek Dvd's have the full season of Next Gen, half way through DS9, i do have Voyager but they are copied from a friend, and will be buying them as soon as the cheaper packs are released later this year, i have copies of Enterprise, but don't have the Original Series yet....told you my buying dvd's was getting out of hand lol.

Yeah i agree kxk start repeating the classic series again :) then run into repeating the new series...DW heaven i say :)

Look at it this way guys.

You get a Christmas special followed by 13 weeks. So in England when things are first transmitted they go 6 months between the regular season and the christmas special.

And a 13 week season goes by REAL quick.

So while we may be down 13 episodes, they'll no doubt space these specials out hopefully one per quarter.

Which means less time between things. I can live with that.

Another bright side is, as someone has stated, less DW means more time to focus on the spin-offs. I would say we will be able to see a real rip-snorter of a third season for Torchwood!!!

I've never been in this thread before and it was a bit daunting to read all 32 pages (so I hope it's not old news) before I put in some gossip that I heard, supposedly from a BBC engineer, on a UK forum. Someone had said that David Tennant was going to be replaced by James Nesbitt, and the ?engineer said it would be Rab C. Nesbitt!!!!! Horrible!

He gave this link to a vid with Rab C. and with David as a woman in some comedy show.

LOL yes there's a slight difference between James and Rab C. :) Oddly enough I still have the Rab C Nesbitt shows on video tape from when I was living in Scotland some years back.

OOOOOOooooWAAAAAAAAAAA...what are the other DW spin off shows besides Torchwood, please?

And there is a K9 show coming too for kids I think that one may be animated, Sarah Jane is meant for kids too but apparently very good.

No way James Nesbitt, yuck, yuck - by the way he's on Parkie this week and the guide says they talk about this rumour. There is also a rumour about the dude from Family of Blood being a contender for Dr, he also plays Wil Scarlett on Robin Hood.
I just hope all of this juggling keeps DT, he is a total Who addict and adores being the Dr so there is some hope.
