Loved this episode, loved the girl who played Sally - is she a possible future companion? I thought she would make a fantastic Doc companion, and there seemd to be an element of keeping her in reserve for the future - and I'm worried about Tate I really don't like her much, but I will trust the producers for they have been making fantastic casting choices.

Like i'm suprised.
I loved that episode, it was beautifully written and I love stories told with the theme of how the Doctor affects the lives of others.
Why "Love and Monsters" never got such an accolade is beyond me ...

Oh i don't know if i will warm to Tate, i never really warmed to martha, i did like sally thouh.....Tate's constant screaming at the Dr drove me nuts.
I too Burn like stories about how the Dr affects other people's lives. I liked the Girl in the fireplace.

I must say, last night's episode blew me away. I knew it would be good as I have read a plot summary and I have heard nothing but overwhelming praise from all who had seen it but I was still gobsmacked over the brilliance of it. I often wonder if we'll have an episode to surpass Girl in the Fireplace. Blink didn't do it but it came damn close.

See Medusa, we can have a Doctor Who story without the Doctor. Now what was it you were saying about Love and Monsters again?
I couldn't resist.
ahem, anyway, just to help our new found fan Aquamarine out ... (I almost shed a tear, I feel like a parent watching their child discovering something new and amazing)
Doctor 1 - William Hartnell (though in later cross-re-generation stories he was played by another actor as Hartnell had passed away)
Doctor 2 - Patrick Troughton (also deceased)
Doctor 3 - Jon Pertwee (also made his name as Worzel Gummige. JP is also deceased)
Doctor 4 - Tom Baker (the one with the scarf, curly hair, and jelly babies and without a doubt, the most memorable)
Doctor 5 - Peter Davidson (also made his name on "All Creatures Great and Small")
Doctor 6 - Colin Baker (or as I like to think of him, "the big whoops")
Doctor 7 - Sylvester McCoy (was the last actor the play The Doctor before the original DW run ended after 30 odd years)
Doctor 8 - Paul McGann (one off appearance in the 1999 American co-produced tv movie)
Doctor 9 - Christopher Eccleston (relaunched DW for the 21st century, only stayed on for one season (didn't want to be "type cast") and has since gone on to guest star on Heroes who has the power of invisibility)
Doctor 10 - David Tennant (the current Doctor (set to enter his third year next year) and the one actor who has managed to shake the foundations of Tom Baker's claim to greatness)
Thank you so much for the trouble you went to burn. However I'm sure you enjoyed compiling some memoirs of greatness, as much as I enjoyed reading them! It's helped greatly in that I not only know the varying Dr Whos now, but also the line up from start to finish. I've made a hint to hubby that Christmas would be the perfect time to catch up on the years that Santa forgot to pack my pressies! And all I have to do is give him this list, along with each series. Hah! He's gonna love that
You know, you have described exactly how I feel about my recent discovery of Dr Who. Exactly!I feel like the child who has just discovered the unique and addictive taste of Turkish Delight, after a lifetime of only having the caramel, fudge and nougat chocs in the box.
And I have to say, after watching David Tennant for just under 6 months now, I'm finding it hard to even entertain the thought of a different Dr, so it wil be interesting in more ways than one, watching the earlier epsiodes. There goes the Christmas holidays!

That's what I liked about her though.
The majority of the time it's always been "Doctor! Save meeeeee". With Sarah-Jane being the lead example there.
Very few female assistants have been dependant on the Doctor but they've all had one thing in common, respect and never really questioned why he did things.
Donna however, Donna got up in his face and gave him hell and I loved that! Tennant also played it up perfectly by going onto the back foot and being completely taken back by it all.
Quite refreshing indeed.

Yes indeed, Dr Who is highly addictive, and to the point of it becoming first priority in this household! Even the kids know not to talk between 7.30-8.15 each Saturday. Usually they have their own video happening from 7.20 as I simply can't have interruptions for fear of losing concentration!

And I enjoy it, I thoroughly do. Though for a while I didn't.
Before I discovered BBB I use to post on a X-Files forum (actually it was mostly a female populated XF forum, not the best sort of forum for a XF fan against the Mulder/Scully union) around the time DW re-began.
Sci-Fi in America picked it up and it became a huge hit and attracted a lot of new fans (much like it's done for you). One dude though, I ended up blocking him on MSN. This guy was very pro-Mulder/Scully and being brand new to DW he drew a lot of comparrisons between them and the Doctor/Rose relationship.
At the time I was hesitant with the Doctor/Rose relationship, it wasn't something I, as a long time fan, was accustomed to seeing in DW. But I endured it. Until it got to the point he basically decided that the previous 30 years of DW didn't matter. All that mattered was the new series.
He chose to ignore 30 years of history. BAM! Blocked him and never spoke to him again.
That's not a fan, that's someone just jumping on the bandwagon for all the wrong reasons.
But people like you Aquamarine, and dear sweet Nutmeg (oh how I miss her in this thread) who have recently discovered the joys of DW and want to learn all about it. I love it because as a long term fan i'm more than happy to help and nurture new fans.
ahhh screw it, let's just start a cult because i'm probably starting to sound like a cult leader.
And no, we will NOT be calling ourselves the Cult of Skaro! Thank you RTD for screwing THAT up.

Absolutely! When hubby saw my rising addiction to Dr Who (seriously! Hell, I'll join your cult
), he asked if I'd watched the originals. To be honest, I hadn't really thought about the originals as it had been so many years since I'd sort of seen them, however I'd only watched a couple of the current series episodes, so it just didn't spring to mind. So now I'm curious as Pandora was and have this need to watch the origins of where it all began and why. As you say, how you can be a true fan otherwise, without knowing the history?

Just keep in mind that Burn is working out his own issues here and don't let them affect you too much. RTD has taken some liberties, but to say he's not a fan is just ott. Whilst we may bitch amongst ourselves about him and what he's done equally we should all spend time on our knees each day being thankful that he was able to get it back on the air at all.
If you really want to see how us Who fans are conflicted about it just visit Outpost Gallifrey someday, but in the meantime don't let other's angst upset you too much.

I am very thankful to RTD for bringing back my Dr Who
I am not disappointed about most things, was only disappointed about trying to make Daleks human that is just not right. But I am pleased to have DW back on tv, what would be the icing on the cake is for ABC to start re-running the old DW series again like they did a few years back.DW is what it is, pure sci fi fantasy, escapism in a world going mad.
I think my next dvd craze will be to start buying the old DW eps, well to be honest I will only get those eps up till Peter Davidson's reign as i just couldn't take to the Dr's or shows after him. I hope that doesn't make me less a DW fan, i think not.

Absoloutely.
While I may come across as being ungrateful towards RTD, I do respect him for bringing the franchise back, however there are some things he's done that have gotten up my nose so to speak.
And yes, you can be a "true" fan (though I detest the notion of "true" fans, we're all fans regardless) without getting into the old stuff. But this guy I was talking about, he basically spat on the old series, and believed the only reason the new DW was a success was because of the Rose/Doctor relationship.
There's always been more to DW than his relationships with his assistants, and that guy refused and couldn't see it.

He sounds like a schmuck!!! how can you wipe out 25 plus years of a fantastic show, rose/dr years are only a small part of a greater series beginning in the 60's... i say moron lol i hated the "romance" with rose & dw but by the end i was the one crying when rose left. I hated the infactuation martha had for the Dr.. I love the episode with Sarah Jane it was good to see just how the Dr affects a companion.
