It's a mistake to think this is just a USA thing.

Trump won because most people like to be cruel. They need to have a different group of people to blame their problems on and punch down on: black people, women, immigrants, trans people, drag queens, the list is interchangeable. They dress up the cruelty with interchangeable excuses: the economy, migration, "protecting children". The cause is usually capitalism (people being layed off / pay cuts) or religion (you will go to hell if you don't hate this other group of people).

The cruelty was always there but it's spreading and getting worse. Apathy about Ukraine, genocide in Gaza, Australia voting no to the Voice, the way we treat asylum seekers, now the Queensland government wants to ban abortion.

We really are entering a new era of human cruelty.

…well my prediction about a landslide for Kamala sure came back and blew up my arse didn’t it?… now I know the reason as to why I don’t usually offer an opinion on Politics… to all those people that voted for Trump… you all deserve what he deals out to you and what he takes from you in the next 4 years… suffer you moronic idiots… you brought it upon yourselves… I won’t even pity you… I’ll be quietly laughing at you… (I wonder how many of the people that voted for him woke up the next morning and are now thinking ‘what the fuck have we done?’)… quite a few methinks… I’m both sad and disgusted … cheers…. 🤬😡🤐☹️🤯.

The oldest living Pres got to vote for Kamala which was what he was living to do. I suspect he will go soon.

The US election result is honestly not surprising especially when you consider the fact that the Democratic party has largely abandoned their traditional voting base of the poor/working class.

As the channel 7 chief political reporter said during their special election coverage, that in any given year; 60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, while only 1% of Americans will have an abortion, so the state of the economy (soaring fuel and rent and utility and grocery prices) is going to be the front/centre issue for the required number of voters to get a candidate across the line, so when Trump comes along campaigning about the economy instead of abortion then he wins.

I read an interesting article the other day about how their has been a surge in the amount of drag queens since both the legalization of same sex marriage in America and the rise in popularity of RuPaul's Drag Race, and how Drag has gone from being something of a rebellious act against gender norms performed in Gay bars to being more of a career choice being performed professionally at a library near you.

This article also described the problems of increased drag popularity, including; commercialization of the craft, the proportionate correlation between increased public exposure and increased public hate, and managing the nexus between queens who have an adult performance life but who also work with children (e.g. curious kid looks up queens socials and discovers adult content then tells parents who complain).

As a man, I find other men arguing about women's health & rights sickening.
I would hate to think this would become an issue here in Australia, but look what is happening in Queensland at the moment.
