Do we have a politics thread to discuss things political?

Thanks. What I meant was is there a movement in Australia to undermine workers rights to unionize or to undermine a union’s negotiating power? Like recently in Canada one of our Premiers used a provision in our Constitution to strip the right to strike away from education workers and force them to accept a contract they never would have agreed to otherwise.

…ah right… sorry Kingston… I see what you’re getting at now… as far as I’m aware there’s not… but someone that is more into it may be way more qualified to answer your question … but I myself don’t believe there is… as I said… I’m not into that stuff much nowadays… sorry if I’ve wasted your time… cheers.

I’m just curious… I know that Australia is pretty pro-union/labour but is there still an anti-union/labour movement like we have in Canada/much of the world?
Yes, the Liberal Party and pretty much the entirety of establishment right wing politics in Australia is anti-union and always has been. When they go too hard however there is electoral blowback, see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/WorkChoices so often it’s more of a slow erosion strategy.

Sorry to see Jacinta Ardern stepping down. I like her.
There, my one and only political statement 😊

It's interesting with her. Everything I've ever seen here has all been positive about her. Yet I've heard she's actually quite disliked in NZ with stuff that never gets air time here.

Then I was recently in NZ and people were talking about some major political issues going on. Once again, nothing ever gets reported here about that.

Funny you should say that. I had a Kiwi client in today and I said it was a shame she was stepping down as I quite like her, and she said, no one in NZ does. I was quite surprised. But then I like her as a person, I know nothing about her politics, so really shouldn't have anything to say on the matter. 🤭

Is the hatred justified though? People have been vicious. Jacinda's received multiple death threats and even threats against her daughter. What evil, vile people. Meanwhile this article spells out how she's done a pretty good job:

I'm a life long Democrat & Drumpf is everything I hate about politics in the USA.
This porn star case seems trivial unless one considers he "won" 2016 by a slim margin & if Stormy hadn't been silenced, we'd have President Hillary Clinton & a very different world.
2024 is going to be a scary election. Apologies for too many words on a terrible person.

Here is her final speech in parliament if anyone is interested in seeing it

Hopefully we may be able to apply for duel citizenship while we are living temporarily here in NZ (as we still own a house in Adelaide) otherwise we will have to start the 4 years again when we get back there. We we living there for 18 years as "second-class citizens". We want to be able to vote, and be eligible for jobs that currently are not, and all the other things that citizens get (NDIS, superannuation, etc)

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to apply from outside Aus. Not sure if the 18 years will count for anything either now, so that's really unfortunate timing for you. I was lucky. I moved to Aus in 1996, and my NZ passport was due to expire in 1999 so I decided to take up citizenship and get an Aussie passport at that time. John Howard had already started making changes like asking ridiculous questions about Donald Bradman and whatever as part of the process, but it was still pretty much a formality. Now that I've lived away from Aus for more than six years I've been removed from the electoral roll (but at least Labor got in in my final election). I'm also parting ways with the ATO this year so I look forward to that. Anyway, check it out but I'd be surprised if you don't have to start again. Best of luck, I hope I'm wrong. Maybe you'll be able to convince them you're just taking a very long holiday.

Yeah i don't like my luck either but we can try.

Tonight is election night in my neck of the woods with just over an hour until the polls close. It’s going to be a nail biter. I live in Alberta which for all intents and purposes is basically the Texas of Canada. We’re a mostly conservative province although many are becoming disenfranchised by the growing alt-right. There’s also a growing number of progressives (such as myself) who want to break the cycle of regressive conservative governments.

This brief video should give you an idea of what we’re dealing with.

Best of luck for your preferred outcome Kingston! Maybe I'll flick on the coverage, I love elections.
