Did pairs kill Big Brother 2014?

People say that every year. That's my point. Every year, the same posts. Poor choice of HM's, silly stunts, stupid tasks, too edited, this will be the last year, blah blah. And then they come back the following year to do it all over again. The posts could just be copied and pasted from previous year.

The first few weeks are always the hardest to watch because there's just too many people, it's hard to to differentiate between them because it's just a bunch of random people, and there's no real story lines to follow. It takes time.

Do the people who feel so strongly that BB is down the toilet (again) know they can google instructions to get US iTunes, Netflix and Hulu Plus on their TV's? It's really easy. There's so much more to watch than Big Brother if you don't like it.

I like the pairs but they don't seem to have faith in the whole thing. They should have maintained it for at least a month.

I mean, the divide lasted a few weeks at least!

And now this Tim stunt... Don't get me wrong, I love tim. But I'm pretty worried...

As always I'll reserve judgment until I see the show...

I agree with a few of the earlier comments. Don't really like the pairs too much but don't hate it either. I think it really comes down to no live feeds (meaning we don't get a chance to see the every day stuff) and the late times have stopped a few people I know from watching. As said above there is 16 HMs in there so hopefully in a few weeks we will get more of a feel for them. Don't really want to wait that long though- damn live feeds!!! :android:

the no updates to check on during the day removed BB from my 'have to watch list' to the 'is there a good movie or ill watch BB' list.
yeah jump-in has a few clips.... 2 mins of footage preceded by adds (17 seconds) and the eye (6 seconds) which make the whole 2 min clip not worth it.

This year I don't think it's the show or housemates that are the actual problem but the fact we got so spoiled last year with updates and blogs during the day of things we didn't get to see during the daily show and over the weekend and this year they are giving us videos of stuff we have already seen and the only other information is crappily written DM articles also of what we have already seen and good luck if you can follow them, they are terrible. We had the opportunity to get to know what was happening in the house and see extra bits that had been edited out and now we get zip. Surely ch 9 have figured out that this years format is killing the ratings. Bringing last years winner back is not going to do them any favours. They need to change the way information is delivered to us.

Somebody mentioned downloading jump in, you don't need to download jump in you can just go to their website. It's virtually the same.

There are tons of problems with this season, which is why I'm skimming this board and not even watching the show.
I think some genius finally realized that people won't vote when they can't be sure the person they support won't be voted out by the housemates.

Playing as pairs could be fine ,and even fun, if they managed it correctly.

It is ridiculous that this was the main premise of the launch, and it crashed so hard they have to send in Tim to try to make it better.

I feel that the designer who came up with this twists, that took away every key aspect of big brother Australia from last year, had no sense at all of the show.
I have to agree with this, I don't see the point of voting to save if who you like gets to go on the housemates say so . However if Gemma thinks that by causing controversy that she will get to stay in the house (in the viewers eyes ) this may well backfire on her ! (hopefully )

Allegedly, Tim is going in the house to break the pairings.

So no more pairs after the first eviction. Every housemate for themselves.

I disagree. The complaints this year have been severe enough that they are giving up on the entire premise and calling in a popular winner to bring fans back. This year is noticeably worse than last year. It has nothing to do with the number of people.

i think the fact that one of the evicted pair gets saved by the housemate is the biggest problem.

I agree. A major fail on this idea. It takes away the viewers concept that they had a part in who got evicted and who stayed. This years BB without a 'live' feed and the very little that we see of the contestants, has caused a disconnect with the viewing audience and the programme. Even though it might be winning its time slot in the ratings, it could hardly be described as a raging lightning strike success. People tune in every night to rubbish like The Block or X Factor, but they aren't tuning in with the same regularity to this years BB. After 2 weeks, I honestly still dont know who some of the people are, with Ch 9 putting the wrong names on them at certain times, it hasn't helped with my dementia either.

It was advertised as they went in 2 by 2, Noah's ark, lightning strikes etc. Will be ironic if the 2 by 2 lasts all of 2 weeks. I agree with many others here, it reeks of desperation with having to put last years winner in so early, to try and generate more interest in the programme and capitalise on Tim, Jade and Tullys publicity on social media, to try and get more people to watch. We all know that social media rules the roost these days, thats why newspapers are in decline.

For me the thing that has made the 'Pairs' feel weak (and by extension, the entire season as it was promoted as being the backbone of BB2014) is that it hasn't really changed anything. Other than the fact they're forced to sleep next to each other and nominate together, it's still business as usual. What's really sad is with a few incredibly minor tweaks, it could have been really awesome.

I was disappointed they didn't implement 'Katie & Lucy'-style rules where pairs had to be within three metres of each other at all times. Would've created some interesting situations already - Katie wouldn't be able to escape Priya and her ruthless attitude, people would be forced to hang-out with Gemma and suffer if they wanted to chat to Jake, Sandra would be stuck with David who drives her insane as it is and Cat would have to deal with being stuck to Travis 24/7.

What would have made the entire concept really interesting is if each Pair had a 'Head Member' that would have the final say on any decisions the Pair had to make - from where they are in the house and when/where to move to, to who to Nominate and executing Power Plays. Could you imagine the resentment building up in Katie if Priya had been 'Head Member' - she would have taken the $10,000 instantly, not given the other HM's any money for the food truck and taken complete control of the Nominations. And the complete opposite situation with Katie as 'Head Member' would have made Priya explode too.

I think the concept of the pairs is an interesting one. Let's face it, how would you feel if you were in there with virtual strangers & basically forced to try & get along with another person knowing they may be responsible for you winning/losing/lasting past the first week. As we've seen, a few have had problems 'connecting' with their partner. But anyone with intelligence would try & find something to connect with the other (whether we saw that on TV or not)
Now the game is about to change, so will we see those who appeared to get on well still do so?
Or will cracks appear as some relationships as they are 'released' from their partners?
Will those who had to dig deep in trying to connect with their partner now find that because they are not forced to be with them, they actually aren't that bad after all?
Will secrets & tactics that some pairs cooked up start to unravel or be revealed to others?
The first few weeks of BB is usually discovering who they can trust, confide in and hang out with; it will be interesting to see if that is all about to change.
It's not earth shattering, ratings busting excitement but it is an interesting experiment if you think about it. Perhaps that is where the problem lies this year, audiences usually want lighthearted entertainment, not deep thinking analyses.

Well said.

Maybe rather than abandoning it they do a re-pick. The saved HM (with no partner) picks first, and then they continue with the remaining partner in each pair picking next so it's all new pairs. At the end one HM remains who is either automatically up for eviction or immune.

Yeah possibly but then you start getting pairs who WANT to be together, hence under less pressure so there's really less chance of people getting too far out of their comfort zone.
Perhaps the 'pairs' concept will loom large in their minds, wondering when & if it will come back into play.
Well if nothing else at least they may find more interesting things to put on the daily show rather than lame pranks & someone crying!
