Deaths of Minor Celebrities

...wow Harley QQ... I didn't realise that Lauren was still alive to be truthful!... she was the partner/girlfriend/wife or lover of Humphrey Bogart if I remember... wasn't her and Marlene Dietrich considered the two responsible for the 'femme fatale' style of female Hollywood actresses in the early days of Golden Hollywood movies?... they were the smoking seductresses of their time methinks... (I mean 'smoking' in the always smoking a cigarette sense which was so popular at the time in movies back then).. wow!... how times have changed in movies eh?... RIP Lauren Bacall.... cheers.

Lauren Bacall sure was a femme fatale, famous among other things for 'You know how to whistle, don't you. You just put your lips together and blow'.

As a kid I hated modern films and loved the old black and white movies. I was a huge Humphrey Bogart fan. Lauren was his wife and starred in heaps of films with him, and she was all class, so I loved her too. Thanks to my nagging, my mum took me to see her in the 1980s in Tennessee Williams' play Sweet Bird of Youth. She was as grand and elegant as you would expect, and I was thrilled to see her live. Still thrilled when I think about it.

She had a good and long life, and everyone's got to die sometime, but it's really sad.
 
...fantastic post nutmeg and a great memory for you my friend... I remember that quote now... I just didn't realise until now who was responsible for it... as with you... I love watching 1930's and 1940's movies... that's why I like Foxtel... they play so many of them all of the time... those sure were the days for movies back then eh?:thumbsup:... cheers.

One of the last of those BIG OLD HOLLYWOOD STARS.

She was rather unusual - possibly the 1st Famous Model to famous actress.
And you can see that point of difference, she is far more sleek & modern, sophisticated, cleanly elegant/stylish.

She is more Kate Moss, rather that Hollywood factory starlet, like Monroe/Taylor/etc.

And one of the first big famous coupling of huge may/december age differences - 25 years between her and old Bogie, and she lived longer without him than with him.

She had a huge ego too, once knocking Kidman for people awarding Nicole premature legend status.

And possessor of possibly the sexiest voice, and sexiest eyes in movies - Jess Rabbit owes her a lot for her look.

The most under-rated movie ever ?

Firstly this is an adult movie. I remember when it was marketed on its release. It seemed to be targeted to all ages - Robin Williams off the back of- at that time- children's movies. It promoted the technology of the making. Overall they marketed it completely wrong, which I daresay has led it to being placed in the mediocrity bin.

However, nothing could be further from the truth. What Dreams May Come would have to be one of the most intelligent, emotional, visually beautiful, and well acted projects ever to grace the screen.

Robin Williams is masterful and Sciorra perfectly mirrors her soul mate (Williams). Their performances encapsulate all the joy and abject sorrow human life entails. It's a movie that wants you to find real love, see beyond cynicism and grasp the idea of soul mate. And it's all presented in a stunningly gorgeous montage of exquisite colour and symmetry.

From the opening shot to the closing frame, its magnificent. The story is enveloping encompassing nearly every asset of human emotion. It's a roller-coaster ride but rewarding. Comedy, hope, sadness, joy, elation, despair... all displayed perfectly.

ALL actors shine, Cuba Gooding Jr is his usual excellent self and Max von Sydow is impeccable.

The greatest movie ever? close... most under-rated movie ever? - most probably. Watch it, very few movies will touch you as What Dreams May Come will.

Yeah, but there's a scene in that movie where he's traversing the hell that suicides go to as he searches for his wife's soul.

Let's hope art doesn't reflect the reality?

Thanks for the kind words. It is also a great memory for me because my mum died a couple of years later and going to see Lauren is one of my favourite times with just the two of us (not trying to sound glum, this is a happy story).

It feels like Lauren Bacall's death mark's the end of an era in some ways, an era of big star glamour and sophistication. Oh well, all good things must come to an end!!!

...I so agree with that review... it sums up the movie perfectly... even though I've seen this movie so many times it still gets a tear out of my eye every time... such a moving movie... the gamut of emotions that it evokes is truly amazing... it really is... thanks Robin... cheers.

Oh gosh Sticky, I watched it this afternoon. I cried through most of it, but what a breathtaking movie, he doesn't falter - you expect him to go into comedic Robin Williams any second, but he maintains the character. What an incredible talent.
