BB10 1st Week Review, Good Or Bad?

I can't hate Sarah Maree because at the end of the end she was only being herself but it is because of her popularity among kids in the first season of bb that producers from that point forward have insisted in targeting the aussie bb towards the family demographic which denies us the juicy bits that makes bb worthwhile. The production team at nine have sanitized the aussie bb to the extent that is bordering on mind numbingly boring pap. This year's cast is vastly superior to last year's but the editing remains substandard and is in all honesty only suitable viewing for preschoolers.

I can't believe it took me 2 hours to write that. This thread had zero posts when I started lol!

Well written the Theorist - I agree with you. I am trying to stay fairly optimistic about this series so I do hope someone at BBHQ reads this thread and takes it on board :)

I mean, don't get me wrong, I get that Big Brother can and will never go back to its glory days, I understand that, but at least give us the benefit of the doubt and STOP TREATING US LIKE CHILDREN!
Good post, this in particular I agree with.

It's sooooooo clear that all they care about are the ratings. And that people vote. That's it. Every decision made about the show is done with those two things in mind. Our viewing experience is completely neglected.

It's a big turn off, makes me not want to watch.

Here's a tip Channel 9: Show us more footage of what actually happens in the house and what the HM's are actually like, and the ratings will take care of themselves. Don't worry about all this rubbish false advertising "BIGGEST TWIST EVER" and things like getting the HM's to pick keys before they go in - blind freddy can see the producers ultimately chose which part of the house they went into.
Stick to the basics and you'll be surprised.

Channel 9 are killing this show now, even more so than they were last year. The producers can give us a fantastic house, fantastic housemates and interesting twists, but what's the point in me even watching if there is so little in the way of content? In the age of digital multi channelling, it is ridiculous that "not enough content, too much editing" is the primary complaint to be made about Big Brother. As it is right now, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays might as well not exist in the big brother house. With the removal of Big Brother from Sunday, the highlights of these three days now have to be squeezed into a 90 minute eviction show on Monday. A minute of edited down video and two lines of dialogue on the website every hour or so is a poor excuse for a live feed - they say they're scared of live feeds causing controversy, citing the racism scandal in the US or the turkey slap incident of 2006, but how often do these incidents happen? Those are the sorts of things a Big Brother fan needs to see in the first place! They are admittedly covering up content in the house because they are scared of the consequences. It is frustrating and confusing for a Big Brother fan to watch such an edited down and sanitised show and to be given such poor excuses as to why.

I know that I don't want to be supporting a housemate who has all their nastiest moments in the house covered up like that. We don't even care if live feeds are on a delay of an hour, and have to be bleeped out at times, but they should be there in some form. Even the UK reintroduced some live content this year - they scrapped it, then restored it again. I know because I used a recording of it to watch the Daley and Hazel incident in full. It reminded me of how important things like this are, even if it has to be in a reduced capacity: there were a lot of things that happened in the Daley and Hazel incident that provided a lot of context that was absent from the highlights show. They say that Big Brother treats us like children, because some of us are children and because of Australian broadcasting rules. That is not a good enough excuse. The daily shows could be a lot more comprehensive whilst still keeping with the "family friendly" rating that a 7pm timeslot requires. There is still no excuse for refusing to deliver content with more mature themes. They have digital multichannels that they could use to provide demographic specific Big Brother content, but they would rather use it to air more repeats of the big bang theory.

I am yet to know any of these housemates well. BBUK is pretty much giving me my fix for the year - I hear complaints about BBUK from the British viewers, but what we are getting in Australia is so much more sanitised and difficult to become involved in.

As much as I love Big Brother and as much as I have sung the praises of this year's twist and casting, I am being completely honest when I say that if Channel 9 aren't going to take this format seriously, then I hope the ratings tank and the show is axed again.

blind freddy can see the producers ultimately chose which part of the house they went into.

I think said this in another thread, but it's funny how the Key thing was meant to be random but both houses ended up with 3 guys and 3 girls in it?

After Week 1, my opinion remains undecided at this point. And this post is about to get very serious.

Knowing that this thread is likely to be read by someone at BB HQ (hi guys! ;)) I'll start by saying that one of the definite strong points of this season is definitely the cast. The casting of this season is honestly probably the best chosen cast since 2003, in my opinion - not only is the diversity there, but they're all strong, promising individuals with a lot of varying personalities, characteristics and potential. I would honestly rank the casting of this group as highly as the 2001-2003 years - so that's definitely a pro point about this season.

But then on the other hand, I'll continue by saying that the casting has unfortunately been let down by the production of the show this year. Yet again we are seeing watered down, mere portions of these HM's and their personalities, and we are still not getting the "full picture" so to speak.

Yesterday I went on a bit of a rant about this issue in another thread so I'm just going to repeat a lot of what I've already said here, but the one thing letting everything down so far is all the contrived BS they're already throwing at us, as well as the way the shows are being put together.

I hate to say this but so far this season has seen the worst and most contrived editing of Big Brother I have ever seen in any series around the world in the whole 13 years I've been watching Big Brother. This might shock some of you but I've actually become a fan of Alex Mavroidakis as of lately (my original opinion of him has slightly come around in the last few months, surprisingly) but Alex, please don't ever say that Big Brother Australia in its current form is "as raw and as honest as reality TV gets" when it's so highly (and most of all, obviously) edited down and "scripted" in terms of how scenes are re-arranged and becoming too structured.

Many may argue that the fact we don't have live streaming is the cause of us not being able to really "know" the HM's but I actually disagree. The Daily Show could still very easily portray the true nature of these people, just as they did for eight years prior, as well airing all the content from the house, without feeling the need to water it all down to the point of non-existence. At the moment, we're merely getting "teasers" of scenes and incidents aired in the Daily Shows that potentially could have been a lot more intriguing and/or substantial had they been shown mostly in full (i.e. the Tully/Mikkayla incident has now had similar treatment that the Angie/Layla incident did last year, and the editing of the HM's "getting to know each other" earlier this week had us only hearing mismatched sentences of each random conversation instead of actually allowing the audience to get to know these people alongside the HM's - which, mind you, is supposed to be one of the points of Big Brother in the first place). It's just really frustrating.

Alex recently compared Big Brother to Home & Away or Neighbours, stating why they clearly differ in "authenticity", but honestly when they start to force storylines into the house (i.e. Tim's "dilemma" as an attempt to cause some controversy among the group), they're really not far off the same type of drama we'd usually see in said soapies - especially when they start to include as many inconsistent cuts (i.e. continuity errors in several episodes so far, namely during the family dinner on Wednesday's show) and when they add CGI effects to the production as well (i.e. that bloody Surly). And that last one really disappointed me.

There was absolutely no need to digitally add Surly. Heck, there was no need to bring back Surly at all! The fact they did add him, and via video enhancement no less, on a freakin' reality show that is supposed to be "as raw and as honest as reality TV gets" - I mean, seriously, does anyone else not see something wrong with that?! This isn't an episode of Blue's Clues.

Considering this is the show that tried to fiercely defend its "editing" nature in a notorious incident back in 2006, they're clearly not too fussed about it these days and it's not sitting well with me. Do they think their main audience is really that dumb? This is not how Big Brother, of all reality TV shows, should be put together!

I mean, don't get me wrong, I get that Big Brother can and will never go back to its glory days, I understand that, but at least give us the benefit of the doubt and STOP TREATING US LIKE CHILDREN!

Week 1 was filled with pointless attempts at creating a faux entertainment value out of the house instead of just allowing the HM's to cause that entertainment on their own accord. Minus the main twist of the house split (which I do like the concept of, it just has a couple of flaws), there was a ridiculous amount of unwarranted "treats" or surprises given to the HM's. They'd been in the house for less than a week and they were already being showered with luxuries, even the "poor" side. Within five days, there was Mikkayla's spa mission, Tim's ice-cream dilemma, Ben and Jasmin's game and Heidi's Surly task. These are all fine had the HM's actually deserved or worked for them after a substantial amount of time in there. Part of the concept of Big Brother goes to waste if they go about things like that the way they have been.

I know Channel 9 obviously have restrictions and a quota to fulfill as to what Alex is and isn't allowed to do with the show, but I just feel as though there really needs to be a bit more of a compromise in how Big Brother is handled, at both the Big Brother and the Channel 9 offices. Now on a network that airs shows such as Underbelly, they shouldn't be afraid to take risks!

In saying all this though, I only go on and on because I care about this show and I don't want to lose it again anytime soon. I know Channel 9 mostly only care about the demo ratings, but it has concerned me that so far this year every single article published online and in print about BBAU10 has been negative. I'm yet to see a positive comment about the show in any major article - so much so that it's almost as though the media are just burning the show for the sake of it nowadays.

I'll obviously keep up with the show and see where it goes and I'm thankful to Alex for giving us a few things we've asked for - I've been taking note of everything and he is trying to give a bit of what the fans want - but there's just those few discrepancies that bug me as a fan.

Overall, I'd give this season a 7/10 so far. I like what they've done with the twist and the split divide. It was a great idea and it certainly has the ability to go far if they continue to execute it well. Just don't be weak with the HM's! Just give us a bit more live house content during the eviction and nominations shows. Don't try to squeeze all the life out of the Daily Shows. Show us full scenes and interactions between HM's.

This is the show that once had Australia in the palm of its hand. Please remind the general viewing public as to why that was so.

The best post I have ever read. You said everything I think. I feel the same way about the show. The show has so much potential, I hope they will take note of what you wrote

I miss the feeling I had before 2008, where nothing mattered but BB, lol. :) I want to like the show again.

Loving this thread and your averages :) Keep them coming every week! Ratings not that great but it's good they are number #1 in their target market.

I will post another thread named BB10:2nd Week Review, Good Or Bad next Sunday with the averages

Theorist, I think this is the best post I've seen on this site! 2 hours, wow!

Quoting for further truth. Somebody in HQ, please take note of what we are trying to tell you!

I didn't mind this week. This bunch of hm's are much more diverse and unique in my eyes but the lack of an adults show or uplate is making me feel like I still don't know any of them!

Showdown was a letdown, didn't feel right and the fact that it wasn't live sucked out all its excitement to me.

First week is usually a bit slow and disappointing on Ch 9 version but I think it will pick up and become better than last year. Drade twist is really good but the divide is virtually useless if they're getting to go to the safehouse regularly or getting free passes. There are some things to improve on

Also it's extremely disappointing to see the lack of programming. Literally no information on the whole weekend, Channel 9 is treating this as a joke. This show used to captivate Australia and it used to matter but now with no streaming and poor updates I feel so uninspired and tired with this show. I'll always watch it but it has so much potential to be better. I feel like this year or next year may be the last season and I really hope Channel 10 revive it because they know how to do it right. Alex M I feel bad for you because you probably feel the same.

I feel the fake couple twist is weaker than the one last year. I've seen it all before, and it was like they just wanted a romance between Drew and Jade (which thankfully it seems they won't get). And the rich/poor divide isn't done that tough. Too early to say if the cast will have big characters who can carry the show for long enough or not.

I'm getting this vibe as well.

He's doing the best he can and I bet it's heartbreaking to see that we still aren't content with the show but if the bloody network would hand over the reigns and let him work his magic I bet this season could be just as good as the older ones. Real low blow to the team working hard on this show 24/7 to be shut down constantly by 9 in regards to Uncut and streaming etc.

I was so excited to see a BB show on a Saturday night, I curled up on the couch expecting a Friday Night Live (Which I always enjoyed).
I ended up UNDER the couch in embarrassment. That little room they're in, looks like the "party" room at McDonalds.

And why the live eels? Poor bloody fish!!! What is it with Channel 9 and cruelty to aquatic animals?! Thank Christ Surley is just a video under a drain... I quite like that idea.

Goon, you need the team to see some of these above posts. ^ ^ ^ We appreciate what they do, it's just frustrating not having the freedom we'd like to have on all accounts.

The twist that is better is a real relationship in the house that people have to find out, this is because it's actually possible to succeed in. It's been done before in Australia I know, but it is more viable as a twist that works.
